Maybe this is a dumb question, but, does it matters if .vb files are from PAL or NTSC game? A friend of mine has both version of both 3/VC, VC its 1.40 NTSC and 1.50 PAL, but with GTA 3 we know PAl is 1.40, but we dont know if NTSC is the original, or the censored.

It doesn't tecnically matter since the format is exactly the same across all versions. Regarding the contents, you should use the European 1.40 version, because it has "O Mio Babbino Caro" song. Other than that and the "overused puta", they all are essentially the same. More details here.

So where do I have to put the VB files? :)

Anywhere within the game folder. Don't forget to define the new path in the INI.

Within the Audio folder is preferred though :p

Thank you so much for this! I always noticed the low audio quality since I first played VC on PC back in 2003 and I've searched for so long hoping someone would create this mod.

I have spent a bit of time testing this and I have made a small comparison between the PS2 and PC audio for those unsure of the difference:

Here is a 30 second audio clip comparison:

And here is an Adobe Audition spectral frequency comparison:

I wonder how's SA with its audio quality on each platform?

PS2 = ADPCM 24Khz Stereo (The lowest quality in the 3D era on PS2)

PC/Xbox = OGG VBR 4 32Khz Stereo

Mobile/Xbox 360/PS3/Windows Store = MP3 VBR 48 - 56kbps 22.05Khz Mono

So PC/xbox original are the best quality?

Also any way to edit the vbs without losing quality? Subopen is kinda messed up and need to cut some part.

Nope. VB's are a final state here, so converting it, editing it and re-saving back to VB will cause quality loss./ Best you can do here is convert it to WAV, edit and then keep as WAV and change the ini to reflect that. Though that extra beep and the announcer starting early was intended and I believe in all versions.

While testing some flickering things of skygfx in III, I've suddenly noticed that VBDec's playback stutters for a second on file's start. It's perfectly noticeably when starting a new game in GTA3 where Head radio always starts from the beginning.

I thought that maybe it's the corrupted vb file but no, I've changed head.vb to another station and had stutter too.

Also this happens when the file ends and starts in a loop (taken some time to wait till radio station loops).

This moment is captured on my video for skygfx topic, so I'll post it here too:

Can i replace the original wav files with the vb ones to not make the game too heavy?

I replaced Flash FM ADF file with VB one from PS2 using VBDec and Audio Samples and now when I enter Ken's Admiral after starting new game, it always plays the ending of Dance Hall Days instead of Billie Jean (which follows Dance Hall Days in the file). Yes, I did check the files themselves, they're fine.

I replaced all the replaceable wav files of gta 3 with the ps2 vb files and left the other wavs that can't be replaced on the audio folder i started my game and when i tried to load a save file the game crashed, did i do something wrong?

Did you edit the ini to denote what's now using VB instead of WAV?

@Claude_Lib: it's known, it's because the timings are different for the codec, it's tricky to correct since not everyone might be replacing Flash FM, nor which version of Flash FM (some PS2 versions have Running With The Night cut out too). So it was just decided for now to leave it as a side effect.

That's debatable.

It's because that start loop skip bug throws the timing off (no word on if that's been fixed yet)

Codec related f*ckery would be my second guess.

does anyone have a link for a good conversion of the audio from the ps2 version of gta III converted into wav?

I'm having some problems trying to install this.

the converted wav files sound terrible... I guess i'll stick to the audio from the pc version and get used to the glitchy audio in some cutscenes, Thanks for the help anyways.

That's debatable.

In what way? Most cases comparing, the PC/Xbox OGG's are better than PS2's ADPCM (and Mobile doesn't even compare), remeber we're talking San Andreas here, not III/VC.

Have you made sure you're installing the audio samples plug-in as that's required to re-route the audio files to whatever you choose.

I have "audio_samples.asi" on the main folder and "vbdec.asi" on the mss folder and finally i have "audio-samples.ini" already configured and the .vb ps2 audio files which i got from the LB LeftOvers Fix post.

But I have a question can I get rid of all the original wav files i replaced with vb? or do i still need them?

I tried to run the game with only the vb files and the other wav files which didn't have vb counterparts and the game crashed after selecting a save file, is this normal?

As long as you've made sure you've chose the rights ones as VB in audio_samples.ini, then yes, you should be able to get rid of the original files that the game was seeking for them. Do things work if you select New Game? If it doesn't then maybe you've deleted one file which IS needed and not yet changed in the ini.

It still happens with the new save file the error is "Unhandled exception: c0000005 At adress 0048d706" So i could have some files missing?

by the way i went to audio setup in options and I see "no audio hardware" on audio hardware and speakers configuration.

Nevermind i compared the number of files on a folder with the original audio and the modified one...sfx.raw was missing xD I have to say this sounds very good! by the way does anyone knows if the files from the LC Leftovers Fix are from the 1.40 ps2 version? because the files from that version have the song "O Mio Babbino Caro" which is a song I like to hear from time to time on the radio.

Thanks for the help Ash_735 i really appreciate it.

I can't find it, can you share the link please? So this means the vb files fron LCLF are not from v1.40? Also are there other differences between audio in v1.40 and other ps2 versions? Because I don't want the subtitles to be different from audio during cutscenes.
