Simply put, there are things in life you do because you have to do them.

Like, avoiding dog poop on the sidewalk or bypassing the first three slices of bread in a new loaf.

In contrast, there are things you just don't do in life, because they have dire consequences.
Like eating anything found on a public restroom floor or asking an overweight bride when the baby is due.
You just don't do those things.

However, in GTAO, there are many things players DO, that other players DON'T DO.
Like, for example, some players enjoy chasing down and destroying other players trying to run cars or cargo.
While other players would never do that, adhering to a basic code of ethical behavior.

But, even more simplistic than that, there are things in GTAO fashion that you do or don't do.
You would never pair the Cupid mask with the Heavy Combat Outfit, nor would you pair the Festive pajamas with the Vile Zombie Hockey Mask.
You just wouldn't!

So, in your own personal code of ethics or even just your routine day to day in GTAO, what are some of the things you think are acceptable versus unacceptable?
What are some of the basic things you think are okay to do that others might deem not okay to do?

Further example, I think it's perfectly fine to shoot players buying clothing, while others find it cheap.
I think it's okay to attack a white flag blip while others think it's unfair.
And I think it's acceptable to repeatedly attack an AFK player until they fight back or leave, while others shake their heads and sigh.

But what about:
Sniping a player who's battling a 1v1 with another player?

• Plant Proximity mines outside apartments, LSCs, Benny's, stores, etc?
• Blow up random PVs, even though the player isn't around?
• Sending muggers on AFK players?
• Using Passive Mode like a revolving door?
• Scream into the mic just to get everyone's attention?
• Use a lag switch to dominate a Deathmatch, Race, or even Free Roam?

• Send an Apartment or Yacht Invite just set people up?
• Capture a Bounty and then give the cash to the person you killed to get it?

TL;DR: What are some of the more common DO's and DON'T DO's you find while playing GTAO?

Happy Superbowl Sunday! Cheers! :)

Don't blow up other people's cargo/MC drug shipments if they've done nothing to harm you. It does not provide you with enough money to make it worthwhile, is ruining hours of effort put in and serves no good purpose.

Taking cars from exporters is fine though because it actually involves a level of skill.

Don't complain on the mic about people being loud on the mic. You're just adding to any level of annoyance there is and most of the time disruptive players won't listen anyway. Just mute and ignore them instead. If somebody sounds young but they're not being disruptive, don't be a dick and start harassing them. They're just trying to enjoy the game like anyone else is and they can't help if their voice is high pitched.

In the starting seconds before a race you must beep your horn as many times as possible before the race starts. Don't enable catchup or slipstream. Ram only as a revenge tactic towards someone who has already rammed you.

(this is all very subjective of course)

I think in your list it seems to mix up being annoying, using tactics considered "cheap" to either win or stand a chance against others, and cheating.

I know a lot of people try to come up with moral codes and ways to play and that's totally fine if you impose them just to yourself - for example, I never use OP weapons unless either I'm in clear disvantage (say a group of guys attacking me by myself and expecting me not to use them), when the other player began using them against me without an understandable reason or when I'm doing some freeroam mission (like Corporate Search) where the whole logic of the mission puts me in immediate disvantage in any fight - however, I can't expect or impose others to do so, this is a sandbox game after all, and everyone will have their own way to play the game and have fun on it.

With this said, I think it doesn't make sense to prevent people from using cheap or annoying tactics (unless not allowed by R*, screaming on a mic to get attention is a listed reason to report someone), but of course it molds the way others (and the target) perceive that player. I consider wrong most of the things you pointed out, and if someone does that not only I'll disagree with their behavior I also might consider fine to go after that player to give him some kind of lesson or payback, but can't expect that behavior to become prohibited.

Finally, when it comes to cheating, that's a big no because it's against the game rules. Almost every game prohibits cheating because while all the other things are just using what the game allows the player to do, this is breaking the game rules. Using lag switches and such aren't something fair to do and should be reported.

DON'T:

- Be an obnoxious twit if you decide to use your mic. Be at least borderline respectful, sensible, and courteous. Don't yell, play obnoxious muffled background music, or hurl racial/sexist/other bigoted epithets at other players. Mic abuse is one of the worst things within the game, and the mute function is a bit flawed--especially if you're right in the middle of a job. Also, please don't call everyone 'bro'.

- Enter a race with the sole purpose of being a disruptive arsehole. It's called racing, not parking in the middle of the track to block others from participating. If you do this, you deserve to be ostracised and kicked from the lobby. I would also say try to race cleanly, but that will never happen with randoms in this game. However, full-on trolling within this environment is a different story and completely unacceptable.

- Abuse passive mode, EWO, or other cowardly backhanded tactics if you decide to engage with fighting other players. Take your kills/deaths and move on. Play at least somewhat fairly or go away.

- Spam people with party chat invites over and over and over again. If someone doesn't accept, there is probably a valid reason. Ask via text if you really need an answer and don't take the rejection personally.

- Dish out what you cannot handle yourself. If you provoke someone, be prepared for individuals to stand their ground. If you target people's cargo/deliveries, don't get upset when they want to seek their revenge.

I could probably come up with a lot more, but here are a few to get things started. :)

As far as I'm concerned, there are no "don't do's" as long as no glitches, mods or other cheats (third party programmes, for example) are used.

It's fine to do all of the things listed in the OP and it's fine to be bothered by them. That's why people fight back.

When I join a public session, I have NO intention of letting anyone kill me. I might risk it from time to time but I'll use every legitimate tool available to me to stay alive as long as possible. This can involve using passive mode, entering any of my properties or just getting the hell out of dodge. Other players do it when they're fighting me as well. It might sometimes be frustrating when you're about to get even and the other guy skips town or something, but it's their right to do that in this game.

I get that people dislike interference from other players when fighting someone. As well as things like the suicide option, powerful armed vehicles, ganging up on others, using weapons that could be said to be overkill in most situations, etcetera. But if you want a fair fight with someone, if you want your engagement to have rules that all involved parties adhere to, you're shooting up the wrong tree. Public sessions, free mode is not the place for honourable or fair combat. What I'm about to say next is pure opinion, but I feel that fair and honourable combat isn't even in the spirit of GTA.

GTA with all of its unrealistic features is still like a parody of the real world where unpredictable things happen and most of the time you have little to no control over whatever situation you find yourself in. Basically, sh*t happens and that's just part of life in San Andreas.

We've discussed this stuff probably dozens of times already. Obviously people here are bothered by players who will do whatever they can to avoid dying at their hands. Understandable. But they're so bothered by it that they then try to belittle the other players, declaring themselves the moral winner of some non-existant fight over principles and personal values. It's all nonsense, really.

You go into free mode, picking fights with complete strangers and you're expecting them to magically know your rules of engagement and not to break those. You can keep calling people cowards, pussies and you name it, just because they're doing what literally anyone can be expected to do: stay alive by any means necessary. Alternatively just denying you a kill because that's the second highest priority. But in reality, you haven't won based on moral high ground or anything, because no rules or conditions of victory were agreed upon before combat.

I've said a bunch of times before than in most of these engagements, both parties end up the victor. One because they truly believe they are better players and better people (lots of ego stuff going on, mind) and the other because they simply got more kills or died at the hands of their opponent fewer times. That still stands. Both parties have their own idea of what it means to win and both won in their own mind.

However, by fighting an unknown player who pulls out all the stops to accomplish aforementioned things and then calling them a coward for doing so, you're no better than them even by your own logic. You didn't send them a message and a formal invitation to a fair fight with rules you both agreed to stick by. You just started fighting them (or fighting back) without settling anything.

It's very easy to talk crap about the other player without giving them a chance to fight you on your terms. You want honourable combat? You get them into a job. You get them into a deathmatch or other PvP job with set rules that they can't break because the game enforces them. You make sure that any additional rules that aren't lobby settings are agreed upon through messages. And then you start the job and beat down on them. That's how you do it.

You don't have the bragging rights otherwise. People have their own playstyles, yes. But people also adapt their behaviour based on their surroundings and the current situation. I play differently in a heist mission than I play in a contact mission. My behaviour isn't the same in free mode as it is in a race or (if I cared about them) DMs. Get them to agree to your terms, have your custom made battle and then declare a winner. Until that happens, wether they excuse themselves out of the opportunity or not, you've got nothing. Your moral high ground is subjective and noone has any obligation to subscribe to your definition of a decent player or a coward.

Not that you're not allowed to vent your frustration at other players. You have that right. But I'm just getting a little tired of people acting all high and mighty when other players are just using the things Rockstar made available for them in a VIDEO GAME. So many times I get the impression from reading posts on this forum that certain people shouldn't be playing GTA:O. They would be better off playing any of the various FPS games out there. Counter-Strike, Battlefield, Call of Duty, Arma, you name it. You get the picture.

So no, I don't think there really are any "don't do's" if no actual cheating is involved. I get annoyed when somebody follows me around in passive mode, stalking me until I'm distracted for but a few seconds so they can get an easy kill while I'm (for example) pinned down by another assailant. It's annoying. But I have no problem with that tool being in the game. I take the risk of falling victim to someone like that by being in free mode and not using passive mode myself. And really that's what a great part of my post boils down to. You know what can happen online and every time you go public and turn off passive mode, that is you accepting the risk of those things happening to you. If we're going to talk about cowardice and what real men do; real men take responsibility and deal with the consequences. And lastly: (paraphrasing) a true king does not need to tell others that he is king.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to hop back into my brand new Ruiner 2000 and have some fun with that.

EDIT: You know what, scratch that. A poster above reminded me that there is something I find unacceptable. And that is the way most people I've heard use their microphones. Dear lord, stop making noise or turn the thing off completely, please. The noise, the heavy breathing, the rambling, the "music", the shouting. Christ. And that's not counting the ones that sound like babyphones. Are some people holding up their new born babies to the microphone or are those actual players?

Self imposed anarchy. Do what I want and how I want and use whatever weapon I want. I go passive and suicide to deny the satisfaction of getting what people want. I use every and any tactic that I can to ensure I am successful in my mission

Don't:

- repeat killing low level players just for yr K/D ratio...

- destroy I/E cars. Stealing them is acceptable ;-)

- rage quit missions/heists after you f*cked up yourself

- quit in the middle of a mission/heist with no reason at all

- give 15% cut or less for heist crew

Do's:

- have fun, fair fights

- help out others improving their knowledge of the game

The only don't I have aside from modding:

- Don't blow everything up if you see people having a meet or doing something together. That's one thing I always sigh and think "you have issues" out of everything else. Because it's so immature and overdone.

Anything within the limitations of the game goes - as far as expecting what others will do. The only expectation I have of others is that they can do almost anything, and if I suffer because I expected someone to do or not do something specific then it is on me.

With that in mind, I typically will adapt my playstyle to whatever I see going on in a lobby, be it peaceful one with CEO/MC work going on or full-on warzone with explosives flying.

I primarily enjoy killing irritating players and don't take any intrinsic satisfaction from simply killing someone, the exception being anything involving annoying people with a Cargobob.

Thou shalt never...

Wear the Space Chimp mask

Put any other wheel type than sport or high end on thy supercar

Cover thyself with every tattoo

Wear red or black contact lenses

Unnaturally colour thy hair blue, green or pink

Drive a donk

Bully the new people

Thou shalt always...

Leave proximity mines for people shopping in ammu-nation

Use ghost organisation to skydive and win at piracy prevention

Throw sticky bombs onto the road to blow up thy pursuers

Take down the savage

Take out anybody in the insurgent pickup

Dress appropriately for thy activity

• Send an Apartment or Yacht Invite just set people up?

Wait, really? People do that? How? I mean, I've received numerous apartment, yacht or garage invites but why? You can't attack anyone while in-doors so how does it work.

And btw:

Do's:

- Help a friend in-need

- If in a friendly session and you source an unwanted car, offer it to someone in the session

- Warn low-level players when someone puts a sticky bomb on their car while they're in ammu-nation or a clothes shop

- Answer simple questions about the game in the chatbox

- If your friend has a bounty, ask him to take it to give him the ability to go passive and not be killed by a random stranger

Don't's:

- Don't attack a player when: AFK, doesn't bother you or your friends, just finished a mission or a heist

- Don't destroy another player's cargo unless they've attacked you or your friends before

- Don't accept 999999RP 9999999$ invites

(and most importantly)

- Don't ask for hackers or beg for money in the chatbox

Everyone has that one friend that just loooves killing random players. And whenever you're with them you must join the "fun".

Since Maze Bank is too tall and the other 2 offices are too East my friend (and I) have the Arcadius Business Center and we do this thing where we climb on the roof and just shoot motherf*ckers.

My friend holds the highscore of a headshot on the turret limo that was parked like near Ammu-Nation (the one near Michael's Garage).

Tried doing that alone. Interfering with 1v1 matches, asking my friend to set a bounty on me to bait players into close range and just kill them until they f*ck off etc. It was disgusting.

If you're playing on PS4 you can easily turn it off. Settings>Notifications.

I've often got it turned off to spare myself the annoyance.

Nothing worse than watching an intense scene during Sense8 or Stranger Things, only to have "xX_SloppyJoe420_Xx has invited you to play GTAV."

Sagrawa is right, though - you can turn that off. But still, when it was on, omg...! lol!

Nice thread. I really can't think of a list for what not to do..

Do

-Realize there aren't any heroes to save you from the horde of 30 other homicidal players, consult your inner criminal.

-Use passive mode to ignore PvP. It might get old fast shooting people all day.

-Spend hours dressing your character to look coolest or annoying-est, if you want to be the #1 public lobby enemy, you gotta look like it too.

Don't

-Trust players to not bother you while transporting any valuables or goods

-Think you can take on an entire group of 10 people by yourself

-Take what happens on GTA too seriously or personally.

Dont:

- Give 0% percent during a Heist finale unless asked to (it won't end well)

- Idle in Contact missions or any other activity for that matter

- Shoot at people in Passive/Ghost mode who are not interested in Free roam PvP :panic:

- Park your Supercar or Kuruma facing back and start spraying, I have explosives you know ? Besides it's really an outdated tactic

- Cheat or at least do it in Solo with your mods and everyhing

Do:

- Have fun but limit ruining others

- Make money so you can profit of the next range of overpriced sh*t hitting the shelves

- Try to be helpful sometimes to a guy in need

I think MOST things in the game are perfectly acceptable, even the things that often get people angry or upset.

The way I look at it is this- if a computer game allows you to do things, then pretty much it's ok. Why give us all the weapons under the sun, Hydra jets with exploding rounds and Knight Rider cars with insane homing missiles if we have to hold back on using them? This is especially true when everyone has passive mode or can go into a crew/ friend/ invite only session

I do try and follow my own etiquette though so...

-I don't kill players who are clearly new or very low levels

-I leave those doing drug delivery or CEO delivery alone (just because I know how annoying it can be)

Other than that I'd say most things are perfectly ok.
