What does it take to be a top GTA Online player?

Every game has its top players. In game genres such as FPS and racing, it's pretty clear what you have to do to rank among the crème de la crème.

But what about a wide open sandbox where there are many different activities like GTA Online? What does it take to be a top player then?

Impossible to be the absolute top player of a game as diverse as GTA Online. There could be top players for each activity, but I highly doubt there is a single person who has mastered everything in the entire game enough to be the the absolute top player.

A helmet, a Marksman rifle, a rocket launcher, a pistol for quick suicide, and a very edgy-looking character with white hair and tribal face-paint.

Bonus if you're shirtless, heavily-tattooed, and have 2-3 friends in your organization who look exactly like you do.

This. Being a top tier player died a long time ago. GTA isn't really competitive.

Assuming you're talking about freeroam;

Sitting in a jet 24/7, toggling passive, blowing everything up you see, if you don't have access to a jet for whatever reason equip your outfit that's only a floating head with a bulletproofed helmet on it and sidestep in first person with the marksman rifle while hopped up on BST. Basically pull as much bullsh*t tactics as you can, even if it means killing yourself so you don't let somebody else get the chance to kill you first.

This is the pinnacle of GTAO gameplay apparently.

Yep, running side-to-side like a crack addict on a dance floor with a 'Marksman' Rifle whilst shelving a metric sh*t-ton of BST and always wearing a bulletproof helmet seems to be the 'top' way to play nowadays. Oh, and you need that sick modded account KD along with those sweet billions to call up Hydras or buy more rockets.

Anyone else remember how great it was when you couldn't move at all when looking down the scope? Made it so much more satisfying to get the first and final shot off.

I got a really high rank, am great at heists, but beyond that i am mediocre at anything else.(mediocre meaning better then average, but still not really a pro at anything else, and the better then average thing is simply because i played this game more then most people i come across by far)

In the more then 3 years i played i have honestly only seen one single player that seemed to be truelly great at everything he did in this game, were it heists, death matches, freeroam fights(without grabbing overpowered weapons like many players do that think they are great, while they are just decent or good), races, flying....

Besides that i have seen of course many that were great at heists and good at fighting and maybe also racing...and on itself the people i worked with were fun and all, but to say their skill was so note worthy they were pretty much top tier at everything in game, nah.

I think that besides dedication, you simply need that feel for gaming in general....i do not have it much, most people have it more then me....but few have really an overload of it, and if they do they generally stick to just doing one thing to be honest and pretty much neglect everything else.

edit: so yea, they first have to have that gaming skill in general and then they need to have the dedication/interest to actually "train" themselves to be good at everything, simple as that.

Its hard to be a top player in every type of activity. There are so many. Even if you lump things together and make it just three major categories: PvE, PvP combat, and racing, I doubt there are many people who are at the top of the game in all three. And it can even be difficult to tell who is a top player in any ONE of those categories with GTA's easily manipulated ranking/stat tracking methods (for example: modded k/d ratios or illegitimate times at the top of most race leaderboards).

I guess a top all-around player would be someone who is at least competitive against most other players in any game mode.

I could consider myself a top player but my in-ability to play darts says otherwise.

Be rich in real life so you can own everything. Other than that, know how to combat roll and use cover.

seriously, a laggy jet is invincible. you can't even lock them, and you can shoot them with cannons but nothing happens

Need great knowledge with the interaction menu, proficient in consuming snacks. Need to know the limit of damage you can take before being killed. Be good at multitasking. Great reflexes and hand eye coordination. Good knowledge with enemy spawn points. When to combat roll and when not to. Access to top vehicles in each class, unless you plan on racing stock. Buzzard and hydra. Need to be a good driver/pilot but that falls under hand eye coordination and reflexes. I'm sure I'm missing a few things. Need the top weapons for each situation, cqc, long and mid range. That's probably it. Maybe some cleverness. I'd probably recommend learning when it's good to use first person and when not to as well, but most situations that's preference.

That's probably a good start to be a great player.

I don't consider being good at EWO and dressing funny at all good for being a "top" player. Those types are rather low in my books and don't deserve recognition in this thread (Although dressing funny has nothing to do with "skill" and can be fun).

Most responses here seem rather sarcastic and bitter. I tried to provide a serious and decent list for most activities including freeroam and cooperative missions.

I'm sure I'm missing many things and tips. I personally think one can be a great player and there is nothing wrong with players that want to approach the game more seriously. Just because some are jaded and don't care doesn't mean everyone is.

(I'm not great and run into better players all the time. I fail missions on occasion. Just saying these things are some of what I would think a great player needs.)

Edit: I forgot good communication and teamwork, something I need to work on. You may be great but being alone will severely hinder you in many activities. It's good to surround yourself with like minded individuals if you plan on tackling heists or CEO/MC work. You can't do heists alone so teamwork and being a team player is important. You can do CEO/MC alone in a solo session but there's nothing "great" about that and you could run into trouble during sales or picking up several crates in one run. Not that there is anything wrong with doing these things alone in a solo session but a "top" player will have a team and be able to do these things in public while defending themselves and their products.

When I had my ass handed to me by another player I knew I would never be at the top.

The part that stung though? When I heard him on mic he hadn't even hit puberty....

I've watched you. You do not
use a computer like a tool. You
use it like it was part of
yourself. What you can do inside
a computer is not normal. I know.
I've seen it. What you do is
magic.

Good. Adaption. Improvisation.
But your weakness isn't your
technique.

Do you think my being faster,
stronger has anything to do with
my muscles in this place?

Do you believe that's air you are
breathing now?

You have to learn to let go of
that anger. You must let go of
everything.

You must empty yourself to free
your mind.

Everyone falls the first time.

If you never know failure, how can
you know success?

Because it's kind of just the reality of the game. Even if you ignore freemode because at its core it is not a good platform for balanced gameplay due to the amount of variables, in deathmatches people will take every opportunity to use every single cheap-out option that's available, e.g. spamming rocket launchers around corners, abusing the peeker's advantage etc.

GTAO just isn't a good platform for anything resembling competitive gameplay because Rockstar more than likely never intended GTAO to be a balanced experience, even within the instanced PVP gamemodes. The only way that I feel you can have a truly balanced game in GTAO is to start up your own deathmatch with a group of people who agree to follow a set of rules because otherwise there will always be somebody abusing some kind of tactic no matter how hard you try to avoid that being an option.

I give almost zero sh*ts about how good I, or anyone else, is at this game. If someone kills me I don't say "holy crap that guy is a certified badass who is so good at this game, he must have an awesome K/D", I say "okay... well good for you I guess. Anyway, moving on".

As long as the people helping me make cargo sales are competent enough to not crash whatever vehicle they're carrying my profit in I don't care about who is good at mindless free roam killing or whatever else. The guy obsessing over his beloved K/D isn't impressing anybody but himself and maybe the one other K/D whore in the lobby with him.

*sigh* ok. In your perfect deathmatch with your perfect team and perfect rules. What would one need to come out on top?

Edit: also, PvP aside what would one need to be great?

Superior aim, target acquisition speed and positioning.

Well that was easy.

I also feel like whether the game is perfectly balanced or not is beside the point. OP simply asked a question. What does it take to be a top player. Personally, "the game is not balanced so it doesn't matter" isn't good enough for me. But that's just me. Thanks for your input on this topic anyway.

I know one guy who I consider a "top player", he excels at most aspects of the game but it's hard to say he's the best at everything the game has to offer. We all have more experience in certain activities than others.

IMO a top player can...

- win easily at PvP

- win races with skill

- pilot & land aircraft with ease

- ride motorbikes like a champ

- skydive like an eagle

I'm probably forgetting some.

A top player needs to be excellent at everything. It's no good being a great shot if you're only an average driver, or a great helicopter pilot but not brilliant in a jet. You can be a very good player with your own strengths and weaknesses but not a top player.

"top players" in fps and racing games are moot as well. What if I'm a top player in team deathmatches, but sh*t on domination? Am I a top player then? What if I'm the best in time attacks but crap at actual races or drift events?

i dont think theres someone that is 100% good at everything there is in this game.

I don't know, there's nothing exactly difficult in the game. I've won every game mode there is to play, including the ones I don't like, I've achieved almost all awards on social club, the exceptions are those which require other players. I can hold my own in pretty much any situation. Not a bad KD, literally thousands of kills and deaths so it barely changes these days, high rank, high bank, all items in the game that I want. Can drive, race, whatever.

I'm not by any means saying I am the top player or the best at any one of those things, I'm saying that there isn't anything in GTA which I personally don't find too difficult and certainly nothing competitive in the game which I cannot win.

GTA is such a diverse and simple game. It's so diverse that it will depend on the play style, its so simple that very little skill is involved to be able to play the game and dominate whatever activities you choose to do. A top player to me could be someone with the skillset required for cooperative play since that's how I generally play the game and has knowledge of the map, missions etc. KD, overall kills, rank, bank balance, garage content, clothing etc. doesn't mean anything. However there will be people who consider a top player one who has a high rank, high KD and owns everything in the game.

Each one of us will have a different idea of what a top player actually is and that leads to a lot of different answers to your question.
