trip
Pac Man.  This could be in Gaming but I felt like posting it here.  The father of Pac Man died last week.  I'm pretty sure you don't need me to remind everyone how integral Pac Man was to one of our beloved pastimes.  Pac Man was the fist video game to contain a true story with cut scenes and all. Sure you had to use your imagination but damn...those cut scenes tied it all together.  It was Pac Man that broke through and made video/arcade games a bit more mainstream. It was Pac Man that influenced a lot of young people to grow up and create the video game industry we know today. f*ck! Pac Man was even Time Magazine's man of the year back then.  Without Pac Man there is a good chance there wouldn't have been a GTA.  I'm sure you can find a version of the original somewhere. So get out there and play a couple of mazes.    *when I get home I may edit in some Pac Man related stuff I have around the house. I still have to original book with maze solution pull out.  See ya'll at the 9th key.     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-MONIvP6kI Edited January 30, 2017 by trip Handsome Jack, Flachbau, Zoobz and 17 others 20 My crappy games at MyCrappyGames.com Free copy of Save The Puppies and Kittens

Coleco
This is a little misleading. It's the founder of Namco, Masaya Nakamura, who has passed away. The actual creator of Pac-Man - Toru Iwatani - has not.  Namco was an arcade heavyweight in the heyday of video arcades in the late 70s and early 80s and was the company that gave the world Galaxian, Galaga, Dig Dug, Pole Position and later Ridge Racer and Time Crisis.  So really, It's more a case of remember the man who founded Namco, the company that provided the world with some of the most iconic cabinets in the golden age of videogames.  Thank you, Nakamura-san. I hope my quarters helped both the arcade operators and the developers in some small way    trip

RogerWho
I've read somewhere that Pacman arcades were so popular, they caused quarter shortages in some areas of the U.S. as well as in Japan with the equivalent coins. Â Also there's an urban legend about arcade owners calling for cabinet service because the machines kept breaking and wouldn't take new coins, while in fact they were simply too full of coins. I wonder what eventually became of that cabinet...   Uhh... sorry about being an ubergeek btw - videogame history is a huge interest of mine Mister Pink
RogerWho
Yea I thought those stories might have been about one of those 2 other games as I wasn't sure about the specifics. Seems like that scene doesn't really exist anymore. Based off of what I've read from this forum during my time here (since there are so many guys here who grew up in the 80's) it seems like the 80's was a pretty rad time to be alive. trip and El Dildo
trip
^ Mighty fine question. Are there any places today where mass groups of kids gather to socialize? Or has it all been removed and replaced with various forms of virtual meetups?  Even the old concept of hanging out at "the mall" seems to be a lost social activity.  Has mass physical socialization been replaced by social media apps?     And to stay on topic - Ms. Pac Man was always the better version. And before Coleco shows up ...yes yes yes...we know it was basically a pirated copy of the original using a speed board(or whatever those boards were called - too lazy to look up now). El Dildo
I just really miss those huge indoor playplace / arcade zones for kids from the late 80s and 90s. they were usually in a big shopping mall. or in the outlet of a strip mall. back when people shopped for sh/t in person. Â where I grew up there was this place called EXHILERAMA. it had everything. every kind of big ticket giving arcade game. laser tag. bumper cars. miniature golf. giant playplace structure with multiple bouncing rooms and ball pits and mazes of tunnels. our parents would drop us off there and we'd go crazy; lose track of time (and money) as though we were all doing coke in some discotec... the bumping music, the neon black lights, the sounds, the tickets, the prizes, the smell of pizza and popcorn and plastic and puke. apparently with video games and cell phones, kids don't need a place like this anymore, but F/CK it was amazing back in the day. childhood just ain't what it used to be. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â you just don't see them anymore. I feel bad for kids. but ignorance is bliss I guess. you just had to be alive then. Mister Pink
RIP Namco founder. Thanks for your contribution to gaming. Â Yeah pity arcades are a thing of the past. I would love to see more and especially unique games only to be found in arcades making them unique. Give better value for money too. Somewhere you can go spend 2 or more hours. Â Last arcade game I adored was Outrun's Heart Attack mode back in 2004 Â Â Â Used to get a local high score. The Korean/Chinese/Japanese guys would always kick my ass though. trip
Ok...I promise not to spin off topic after this. Sometimes I can't help it.          you just don't see them anymore. That place looks bitchen. I dug up a picture of a random Spaceport from the 80's. *I love 80's pictures(or movies) that look like an exaggeration but are actually a real time view of what the 80'S were like.  It was totally tubular, to the max*I'm a huge Frank Zappa fan and thanks to the valley girl thing and Zappa's daughter being the person responsible for the song it took me many years before I would listen to the album it's on. Good album by the way.   Last arcade game I adored was Outrun's Heart Attack mode back in 2004   I freakin' love Outrun. Never heard of 'Heart Attack'. Looks sweet. And last bit of nostalgia. Here is my roller rink from back in the day. Young me is even in the shot. This was not a special event...this rink was always a wonderful mob scene. El Dildo
yeah that's awesome. sorry to be the 'old man' but kids are f/cking missing out nowadays. Â pokemon go f/ck yourself. this is why kids are fat and lazy and have diabetes. Â we used to hop on our bikes and disappear into the world. no cell phones. no contact with home or parents. they just trusted we would be home around sunset for dinner. but we'd just ride around the neighborhood. play some baseball. skateboard. make up a game from scratch. go to the arcade. go to the movies. do some paintball in the woods behind the subdivision. chase the girls (especially the one you like). toilet-paper the teachers house. literally build a wooden fort in the forest using spare lumber from your buddy Joe whose dad is a construction worker. Â what do kids do today? Mister Pink, Night Machine, Sir Michael and 2 others
ghost of delete key
I've read somewhere that Pacman arcades were so popular, they caused quarter shortages in some areas of the U.S. as well as in Japan with the equivalent coins.  Also there's an urban legend about arcade owners calling for cabinet service because the machines kept breaking and wouldn't take new coins, while in fact they were simply too full of coins. LOL my trick was to (easily) pop open the rear cabinet door and set the DIP switches on the circuit board for 256 PacMen and free-play. (the operation/settings manual was always inside the cabinet.) Got me kicked out of some places  Also, all y'all who missed the 80s, let me tell you, you didn't miss anything special. Just saying. bread
^ Mighty fine question. Are there any places today where mass groups of kids gather to socialize? Or has it all been removed and replaced with various forms of virtual meetups? Sorry for replying so late, I haven't been on the forums so much. But to answer your question - not particularly. At least from my experience. Where I go to college lots of students will socialize at parties and music shows, but that's been happening for ages. Back then when there were no phones, I'm sure kids would meet up and hang at the roller rinks, bowling alley etc and whatnot. Whenever I go to the bowling alley with my friends, it's usually 70% adults and families, and 30% young people. Â I mean, I'm not saying technology has made socializing worse - it definitely creates a lot of connections, but it has suppressed certain aspects of people that I'm sure were quite prevalent back when it wasn't so advanced and people made great lengths to go meet up, and found lots and lots of other ways to have fun. Nowadays people can resort to the internet for escape from the real world. I'm sure lonely people today would have hated the 80's! Â You lived through a good time dog, I'm glad you're embracing the past. Pac Man was the f*cking sh*t and still is. Coleco
