That can never happen, mister. Plus, all the hype surrounding Leslie wouldn't have happened without the brilliance of the technical teams working at Rockstar. He can't do art, write engine code, or make animations.

Never say never. Also, Leslie was not just 'hype'. God, does it annoy me how fans will just write him off like he has done nothing just to make the Housers look good. Go read some of the emails from the Dan Houser. They were literally begging him to help them with Red Dead Redemption or they wouldn't have been able to release it, period. The kinds of technical teams that work at Rockstar are not rare. You think good coders artists or technicians are hard to find? Read the article again, especially the bit about how he's also taking key members of the development team with him because they are sick of Rockstar's bad management. Besides, most of the real talent has already jumped ship from Rockstar as it is over the years. Just because they're your favorite company does not mean they are invincible or infallible. I for one am rooting for Leslie all the way.

We can keep arguing forever, but what would be the point? RDR2 will speak for Rockstar without Leslie, so let's wait and see when it's released.

Go read some of the emails from the Dan Sam Houser.

you mean the out of context emails that were only used as a cruel last laugh in a completely unrelated lawsuit

nice fallacy bucko

The kinds of technical teams that work at Rockstar are not rare. You think good coders artists or technicians are hard to find?

God, does it annoy me how fans will just write the development team off like they've done nothing just to make THE BENZ look good.

Read the article again, especially the bit about how he's also taking key members of the development team with him because they are sick of Rockstar's bad management.

what article

if you mean the one in the OP, you're lying, because nobody ever says this. ive combed through countless everywhere articles since january - and nobody has ever said anything like this

Besides, most of the real talent has already jumped ship from Rockstar as it is over the years.

'real talent' that has jumped ship from rockstar:

1. THE BENZ, the second coming of christ himself, the sole developer of every single gta except v

2. Colin Entwistle, audio and camera programmer, and the lead programmer of gta v (the one nobody here liked)

3. Matthew Smith, a man so prolific i cant find any details on him apart from 'former sound director'

4. dust particles that have drifted out of windows and doors

We can keep arguing forever, but what would be the point?

i dunno man. THE BENZ and co have said approximately 4 things about everywhere:

1. its like 'nothing anyones ever seen before' and its gonna be really cool!

2. its kind of like gta but sort of but kinda, so rockstar cant sue us

3. you can do anything (lol)

4. [insert generic marketing babble here]

its funny tho that so much sh*t has been flung at rockstar, especially after the announcement of everywhere. its all projection, honestly - big hype for a game we know nothing about that looks to be as good as no man's sky, or some random early access survival game. maybe arguing about it just shows that, hey, maybe this whole thing is just the overture to a big disaster

and yes, it's all hype. please name one specific detail that proves that the game's premise or gameplay is at all interesting or original

oh wait

there are no details

huh

It's not just Leslie who's gone. Tons of veterans have left North after his departure, which strongly suggests his claims have some basis in reality. And if even just a bit of that stuff is true about Rockstar and Take-Two, they're surely ran by absolutely terrible people. Red Dead Redemption 2 will not prove what Rockstar can do without him, because he still had a role in development of it.

I'm not sure if any game they make will be fully rid of his talent, since he basically constructed the foundation of their open-world technology. With some help from others, most of which have likely left Rockstar too.

so basically what youre saying is that even if rdr2 is good, THE BENZ was still the only good thing about it. he was still the only dev to ever work or create a rockstar title, and nothing he can ever do is wrong

moralising about company ethics aside, and a lot of it isn't as serious as people have hyped it up to be (ive read through the actual lawsuit countless times at this point), this is some really flawed logic. leslie didnt have much of a hand in rdr2 at all, and he isnt being credited for anything either to my understanding. so how would that not prove that rockstar can work without him?

imma need a citation on that 'tons of veterans' thing btw. ive done some digging previously but the most i found was some dudes who left in 2014 to start an audio company (which was actually a really interesting article on the inner workings of r*). there isnt a huge torrent of employment terminations, or a heaping of veterans leaving to talk sh*t to the media. its like, three or four guys. a majority of the people working on everywhere rn aren't even actual industry veterans, just new hires looking for work judging by their employment record

You shouldn't write Rockstar off. That's foolish. But so is downplaying and discrediting someone like The Benz. Over hyping a game with minimal details can also look foolish but so does underselling it.

Everyone needs to step back and breathe. We have the early makings of a Stan/fanboy war brewing.

I see The Benz as a traitor, he probably hates Rockstar now and wants to make a competition game between Everywhere and GTA. Like Call of Duty and Medal of Honor. Medal of Honor lost and Call of Duty took over, not anymore ofcourse. So I see this a Revenge to GTA and hopes to make GTA suffer in effect because No One Open World Game has taken over GTA 1st position. Driver couldn't do it, Saints Row couldn't and Just Cause neither, for now.

Some dude? He's been the Audio Director since GTA1!! And Will has been around since GTA3 days, your digging also failed to turn up another major loss that is Stephen Bliss, who has done the cover art for pretty much every Rockstar Game since GTA3. (As well as the kick ass looking wallpapers and designs which they suddenly no longer do)

Actually let's delve deeper into this, MAJOR leaves from Rockstar Games following Leslie's departure:

The Benz [Producer]

Craig Conner [Music Director]

Will Morton [Dialogue Supervisor & Senior Audio Designer]

Matthew Smith [Audio Director]

Jonathan McCavish [Audio Designer]

Adam Fowler [Technical Director]

Ian McQue [Lead Concept Artists/Assistant Art Director]

Stephen Bliss [Lead Concept Artists/Artwork Director]

Colin Entwistle [Lead Camera Programmer/Programmer]

Mondo Ghulam [Animation Director/Lead Cutscene Animator]

Colin Walder [Audio Programmer]

Christian Kjeldsen [senior Sound Designer]

And there's been a few more since then ranging from those who later joined in 2005/6 who also left in 2015/6.

I wonder how those people leaving will affect future Rockstar titles, but it'll definitely be interesting to see what they can do independently.

wow

the cover guy

you heard it here first folks

rockstar will never make a good game again

MAJOR leaves from Rockstar Games following Leslie's departure:

The Benz [Producer] already talked about him

Craig Conner [Music Director] sound guy

Will Morton [Dialogue Supervisor & Senior Audio Designer] sound guy

Matthew Smith [Audio Director] sound guy/already mentioned

Jonathan McCavish [Audio Designer] sound guy

Adam Fowler [Technical Director] technical director (admittedly an important loss, but still replaceable

Ian McQue [Lead Concept Artists/Assistant Art Director] artist

Stephen Bliss [Lead Concept Artists/Artwork Director] artist

Colin Entwistle [Lead Camera Programmer/Programmer] camera guy lmao/already mentioned

Mondo Ghulam [Animation Director/Lead Cutscene Animator] animator

Colin Walder [Audio Programmer]Christian Kjeldsen [senior Sound Designer] sound guy

And there's been a few more since then ranging from those who later joined in 2005/6 who also left in 2015/6. suuuure

so all in all here we have, as in team leaders:

-a couple sound guys

-two artists and one animator

-the technical director

-and three people ive already mentioned

let's assume that all of these people left because of the benz, and not because they've been in the industry for a very long time or they're retiring or anything 80% likely like that. they all left because of the benz. game development is a team effort, you know that right? there's a dozen people that are probably very talented that could just as easily take the top spot in their respective branch. it's really not a big deal in that regard - apart from technical director fowler, of course. if they all left their branches voluntarily and on good terms, they probably had very competent replacements lined up so, like, sh*t ain't be f*cked

now if your argument wasn't actually about leslie at all - you've completely missed the point of what i was trying to say

So basically you're downplaying those who have had major influence of the look and feel of Rockstar titles? I like how you brush off Stephen Bliss as just a cover guy when he's responsible for the character art of these games, that unique style in Bully, the grittiness of The Warriors art, that western drenched look at RDR's character art, etc. Plus he designed majority of Rockstar's t-shirts (notice how they only sell GTAV Logo stuff since then, there's been no new Alt style Rockstar Games art) as well as the wallpapers, and initial concepts for the websites (notice how Rockstar Games website is now basically Tumblr?).

Ian McQue was major is designing outlines for locations and characters in concept, initial designs, sketch ups, the way characters looked over the years came from this mans designs as well as major contributions in stylising of the games.

Say what you want about team effort, but these kind of people ARE what contributed to that feeling Rockstar Games used to have. Again, you brush off the Sound Team, but Rockstar Games were always praised for their Sound design and mixing, some of THE best in the industry and the people in charge of that, who created it, over the years have now gone too. You might think little of Leslie, but him being fired from Rockstar Games HAS had a knock on effect, you can't seriously sit there and tell the Rockstar of today are the same Rockstar from 2007 - 2012.

Dan Houser could walk out of R* claiming 'creative differences' [industry-speak for the leader was a knob and the person leaving couldn't take it anymore], and this bloke would say "Sam never needed him anyway, he wasn't important".

So basically you're downplaying those who have had major influence of the look and feel of Rockstar titles?

please dont put words in my mouth, ash

i think i jumped the gun and got a little cocky with how i framed my argument in my prior post, but let me be clear here, im not downplaying their contributions

these people leaving, well, its not great and it never is. i love ian mcque's art, his concept stuff is great and his design work is impeccable (i personally own the iv and la noire artbooks and plan on getting the digital + analogue boxset). the sound mixing, especially on more recent gta games has been superb and their innovations and systems theyve contributed to the design team will always be appreciated. colin entwistle puts the camera in good spots sometimes too i guess

itll be hard to find better guys if they havent already been hired, but the thing is, he didnt leave on bad terms (or as ex-driver so eloquently said, 'creative differences'). he left because he didnt like how he had to work with deadlines and wanted to design his own stuff, and its pretty similar results when it comes to what i found on the others.

my initial point was that leslie wasnt the reason a majority, if not all, of these people left. they left for a multitude of reasons, some because theyd been working for rockstar for 7+ years, some because they wanted to start their own companies and try new things, so on. please dont try and turn the argument around to 'you just dont APPRECIATE THEM' - because thats simply not the case. rockstar has more than three people working on games, i know

You might think little of Leslie, but him being fired from Rockstar Games HAS had a knock on effect,

it hasnt. a lot of these people have been working for rockstar for a very very long time, thats all.

you can't seriously sit there and tell the Rockstar of today are the same Rockstar from 2007 - 2012.

the rockstar of 2007 was not the same rockstar as the rockstar from 2001. the rockstar from 2002 was not the same as the dma design from 1997. phrasing like this is honestly just really weird ngl

Dan Houser could walk out of R* claiming 'creative differences' [industry-speak for the leader was a knob and the person leaving couldn't take it anymore], and this bloke would say "Sam never needed him anyway, he wasn't important".

i wouldnt and no it doesnt mean that, but hey, at least you can tell the two apart. most people dont get that far

Also, Fartenhate, you're not getting Digital + Analogue for sure as it was cancelled. No news since announcement like 6 years ago, and publishers started revealing it had been cancelled.

Nah thank you. I don't wish to see GTA, and virtually other titles, losing their artistic dignity. Reading Aaron's interviews about building these worlds and how they set them up to look and feel alive is entertaining and eye-opening. No other art team would save the day, I believe.
