Who's financing all this? I can't imagine The Benz is paying all this from his own pocket. EA under the hood?

The Russians, LOL!

imma need a citation on that 'tons of veterans' thing btw. ive done some digging previously but the most i found was some dudes who left in 2014 to start an audio company (which was actually a really interesting article on the inner workings of r*). there isnt a huge torrent of employment terminations, or a heaping of veterans leaving to talk sh*t to the media. its like, three or four guys.

Actually let's delve deeper into this, MAJOR leaves from Rockstar Games following Leslie's departure:

The Benz [Producer]

Craig Conner [Music Director]

Will Morton [Dialogue Supervisor & Senior Audio Designer]

Matthew Smith [Audio Director]

Jonathan McCavish [Audio Designer]

Adam Fowler [Technical Director]

Ian McQue [Lead Concept Artists/Assistant Art Director]

Stephen Bliss [Lead Concept Artists/Artwork Director]

Colin Entwistle [Lead Camera Programmer/Programmer]

Mondo Ghulam [Animation Director/Lead Cutscene Animator]

Colin Walder [Audio Programmer]

Christian Kjeldsen [senior Sound Designer]

And there's been a few more since then ranging from those who later joined in 2005/6 who also left in 2015/6.

I wonder how those people leaving will affect future Rockstar titles, but it'll definitely be interesting to see what they can do independently.

Some dude? He's been the Audio Director since GTA1!! And Will has been around since GTA3 daysthey left while leslie was still on the team tho

your digging also failed to turn up another major loss that is Stephen Bliss, who has done the cover art for pretty much every Rockstar Game since GTA3. (As well as the kick ass looking wallpapers and designs which they suddenly no longer do)

wow

the cover guy

you heard it here first folks

rockstar will never make a good game again

MAJOR leaves from Rockstar Games following Leslie's departure:

The Benz [Producer] already talked about him

Craig Conner [Music Director] sound guy

Will Morton [Dialogue Supervisor & Senior Audio Designer] sound guy

Matthew Smith [Audio Director] sound guy/already mentioned

Jonathan McCavish [Audio Designer] sound guy

Adam Fowler [Technical Director] technical director (admittedly an important loss, but still replaceable

Ian McQue [Lead Concept Artists/Assistant Art Director] artist

Stephen Bliss [Lead Concept Artists/Artwork Director] artist

Colin Entwistle [Lead Camera Programmer/Programmer] camera guy lmao/already mentioned

Mondo Ghulam [Animation Director/Lead Cutscene Animator] animator

Colin Walder [Audio Programmer]Christian Kjeldsen [senior Sound Designer] sound guy

And there's been a few more since then ranging from those who later joined in 2005/6 who also left in 2015/6. suuuure

so all in all here we have, as in team leaders:

-a couple sound guys

-two artists and one animator

-the technical director

-and three people ive already mentioned

let's assume that all of these people left because of the benz, and not because they've been in the industry for a very long time or they're retiring or anything 80% likely like that. they all left because of the benz. game development is a team effort, you know that right? there's a dozen people that are probably very talented that could just as easily take the top spot in their respective branch. it's really not a big deal in that regard - apart from technical director fowler, of course. if they all left their branches voluntarily and on good terms, they probably had very competent replacements lined up so, like, sh*t ain't be f*cked

now if your argument wasn't actually about leslie at all - you've completely missed the point of what i was trying to say

So basically you're downplaying those who have had major influence of the look and feel of Rockstar titles? I like how you brush off Stephen Bliss as just a cover guy when he's responsible for the character art of these games, that unique style in Bully, the grittiness of The Warriors art, that western drenched look at RDR's character art, etc. Plus he designed majority of Rockstar's t-shirts (notice how they only sell GTAV Logo stuff since then, there's been no new Alt style Rockstar Games art) as well as the wallpapers, and initial concepts for the websites (notice how Rockstar Games website is now basically Tumblr?).

Ian McQue was major is designing outlines for locations and characters in concept, initial designs, sketch ups, the way characters looked over the years came from this mans designs as well as major contributions in stylising of the games.

Say what you want about team effort, but these kind of people ARE what contributed to that feeling Rockstar Games used to have. Again, you brush off the Sound Team, but Rockstar Games were always praised for their Sound design and mixing, some of THE best in the industry and the people in charge of that, who created it, over the years have now gone too. You might think little of Leslie, but him being fired from Rockstar Games HAS had a knock on effect, you can't seriously sit there and tell the Rockstar of today are the same Rockstar from 2007 - 2012.

Dan Houser could walk out of R* claiming 'creative differences' [industry-speak for the leader was a knob and the person leaving couldn't take it anymore], and this bloke would say "Sam never needed him anyway, he wasn't important".

Oh... I didn't know about Mondo Ghulam departure. Sad to see all those familiar names gone. The ones I'm sorry the most for being gone are Craig Conner and Ian McQue - always loved their works.

So basically you're downplaying those who have had major influence of the look and feel of Rockstar titles?

please dont put words in my mouth, ash

i think i jumped the gun and got a little cocky with how i framed my argument in my prior post, but let me be clear here, im not downplaying their contributions

these people leaving, well, its not great and it never is. i love ian mcque's art, his concept stuff is great and his design work is impeccable (i personally own the iv and la noire artbooks and plan on getting the digital + analogue boxset). the sound mixing, especially on more recent gta games has been superb and their innovations and systems theyve contributed to the design team will always be appreciated. colin entwistle puts the camera in good spots sometimes too i guess

itll be hard to find better guys if they havent already been hired, but the thing is, he didnt leave on bad terms (or as ex-driver so eloquently said, 'creative differences'). he left because he didnt like how he had to work with deadlines and wanted to design his own stuff, and its pretty similar results when it comes to what i found on the others.

my initial point was that leslie wasnt the reason a majority, if not all, of these people left. they left for a multitude of reasons, some because theyd been working for rockstar for 7+ years, some because they wanted to start their own companies and try new things, so on. please dont try and turn the argument around to 'you just dont APPRECIATE THEM' - because thats simply not the case. rockstar has more than three people working on games, i know

You might think little of Leslie, but him being fired from Rockstar Games HAS had a knock on effect,

it hasnt. a lot of these people have been working for rockstar for a very very long time, thats all.

you can't seriously sit there and tell the Rockstar of today are the same Rockstar from 2007 - 2012.

the rockstar of 2007 was not the same rockstar as the rockstar from 2001. the rockstar from 2002 was not the same as the dma design from 1997. phrasing like this is honestly just really weird ngl

Dan Houser could walk out of R* claiming 'creative differences' [industry-speak for the leader was a knob and the person leaving couldn't take it anymore], and this bloke would say "Sam never needed him anyway, he wasn't important".

i wouldnt and no it doesnt mean that, but hey, at least you can tell the two apart. most people dont get that far

Remember that new blood into Rockstar team might change things to better and we see more innovation. I admit that I will be worried if the art director of North studio, Aaron, decided to leave.

Aaron Garbut and Imran Sarwar are still around to save the day, so nothing is lost yet.

Also, Fartenhate, you're not getting Digital + Analogue for sure as it was cancelled. No news since announcement like 6 years ago, and publishers started revealing it had been cancelled.

Nah thank you. I don't wish to see GTA, and virtually other titles, losing their artistic dignity. Reading Aaron's interviews about building these worlds and how they set them up to look and feel alive is entertaining and eye-opening. No other art team would save the day, I believe.

Alright.. Not the end of the world. He is probably one in many people in the Covert Art Team.

Edit: At 1.2k employees there is certain more than 30 people specialised in Covert Art.

Thirty people whose job and speciality is cover art? I hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiighly doubt it. They probably have one guy who handles it, two or three at most. It's not the end of the world though, Rockstar will have a ton of artwork but their artwork's style remains consistent, they'll have people who can fill the void.

Those two couldn't save GTA V's story mode DLCs, only the Benz could do that.

I know the description of this game is vague at best:

“A video game that simulates and fuses the real world with the virtual. Live your own stories as you live in ours.”

I'm worried it's going to be some VR gimmick or some new Second Life sort of game that's really far removed from the sort of core of videogames that we enjoy.

"Our goal is to create a platform where players can be entertained, and also entertain others while blurring the lines between reality, and a simulated world."

Again, it's vague but I'm also a little concerned that will will be some online social thing, not a traditional videogame. Sounds like it's an online interactive job, maybe multiplayer VR? Maybe you can meet friends in VR and play bowling together in a virtual environment or something?

I know it's little to nothing to go on but I'm going to remain skeptical about this. I think I read that Benzie's baby was GTA Online and while I admire the ambition I still prefer 'traditional' videogames and by traditional I mean that if your internet went you would have a fully realized game with hours worth of things to do by yourself.

"..blurring the lines between reality, and a simulated world." Makes me think it's a some sort of VR thing like there some sort of cross-over.

"..players can be entertained, and also entertain others" What could this mean? A simulated world where you have your own online house. You can invite friends to it and sit and decide what you watch on the simulated TV? Like instead of just Skyping your old friend in another country, you hang out in this simulated world and hang out virtually, doing all kinds things like virtual zip-gliding, virtual bungee jumping etc? Maybe you go to a virtual bar and sing virtual karaoke with virtual but real strangers.

Guess we'll have to wait and see.
