What EXACTLY are 'player levels' for?

I understand that when you start and get up to level 120 you have everything unlocked but there are no rewards for getting higher. I got my level 300 last night and wasn't in the slight bit bothered as there was no reward so what does levelling up past level 120 actually do? For me it just proves more annoying as I am constantly being asked if I am a modder, asked if I can help people make cash, asked how I get all the money I have etc.

Surely a system where you level up, say every 50 ranks should benefit in some way, at least maybe unlock something like free weapon tints, a new tshirt and so on.

When I see a level (legit or not) in a lobby of say 1000 or the stupid 8000 ones I literally do not even bay an eyelid - they are no better at the game than me and I am only 303

Progression and an indication of player skill. It can't just stop at a level once everything is unlocked and have everyone as the same rank.

Plus you can use it as a way to determine if they are decent or not. Not entirely accurate but more times than not, a higher rank will be better than a lower rank.

Well actually that's exactly what it can do since above 120 is all the exact same. There really is no point to it after that, but I do get what you're saying.

I have played with a level 250 who has been useless. I have let a level 20 deliver cars for me who has been brilliant. To me level means nothing although human nature is to trust a higher rank than a lower one.

I remember doing the PS heist finale ages ago and couldn't get people to join for ages. The last person was a level 18 and he done it perfectly

I suppose it can be viewed as the overall experience of a player and whether or not they partake in game modes that increase their overall level, but yes, it is basically useless after 120 as far as unlocks, benefits, and the like are concerned.

I find it perplexing though how some are convinced that certain levels are impossible on a legitimate scale. I personally know several legitimate level 1000+ players and if you partake in mostly jobs whilst gaming, levelling up is not really that difficult. We all have our strengths and weaknesses though; a level 1000 can easily struggle or excel at certain game modes--as I said though, it doesn't mean much on the surface other than experience and gaming preferences.

I levelled up one character to almost 800 over a year ago and ultimately retired it due to constantly getting kicked from jobs and asking if I could drop money. It would indeed be nice if more perks were added after reaching 120, but I suppose we'll have to wait until the next instalment of online to see whether or not that happens.

You understand it perfectly. After level 120, it's meaningless to you. OTOH, it can help you see how experienced other players are. For instance, you can assume a level 553 is going to be pretty good at the game, just by virtue of how much time they've put into it. When you see a level 8008, you know they're a total noob, and begging to be killed. I'm sorry. What I meant to say was, they're a total noob, and need some experience. Give it to them.

1: yes.

2: hell nope.

There are certainly exceptions, but level is a pretty good skill indicator, especially during heists. I have found low levels, anything really under 100, to be a burden. It's certainly not always the case, but overwhelmingly so.

the level is an accumulation of points meant to represent activities done in gta online. it also can represent how relatively skilled a player is at the game at large.

addendum: this does not apply to those with modded accounts (if you look at their trophies or game library, you can tell faster than the actual in game level, kd, and stats...sometimes)

i am currently sitting at 797 for example.

i have completed a lot of activities.

i am very good at the game as a whole.

Play a heist with a high lvl (legit), then play one with a low lvl. Then u will have the answers you seek. Theres always the prodigy, but not too often. 90% of the heists i started with low lvl's have ended badly.

What they should do is give a bit of a cash boost to your bank account every time you go up 10,20 levels etc. Doesn't have to be much but it would encourage people to actually try and level up. Might even boost the number of players playing different modes

It's pretty dumb.

There could (or should) be a lot more cosmetic unlocks based on level past 120, otherwise they should probably have just had a level cap at 120, and just raised it by 30 or so levels every major content update.

The only thing being high level really achieves is getting you kicked.

Any ranking beyond 135 serves no purpose...unless you really care about the golden globe unlocked at rank 750.

Would have no trouble with it if they set the cap back to 135 or so.

For me it is a source of pride and also serves as a goal. I'm closing in on level 1,000 and that has been something I've been working towards since the start. Selfish? Sure, but that's the nature of this game.

The only negative is that people believe I'm a modder, which can get annoying.

They are for when things were actually rank locked...

Everyone over 120 is a hacking cheating modder skid, give me mony pls.

Seriously, I put in another post that I suspect R* was supposed to go somewhere else with the game and it didn't go that way so it has ended up with these aspects that have no great significance. It was either supposed to be difficult to get to 120 or there were supposed to be further staged unlocks, either way... It didn't happen.

If anyone was involved with this game from day one they would know that when it was released it was not completely signed off 'ready to run' and that things like core components and rules changed daily, and not always for the better. It was a bit of a balls up from the off really and I don't think it ever recovered.

That's why after one has lost a couple of million gta$ in bugs and glitches R* plugs you a sweetener of a few hundred grand and is also why the dlc is free as the game still continues to have broken bits across the board. Who would buy broken dlc to add to a broken game and be satisfied with their purchase?

Don't for one moment get me wrong, I take great enjoyment from online and when it works it's great but they have to keep patching up the old place to hold it together when maybe it would be more effective to knock it down and replace it. It's a great learning curve but people mustn't pay for it. IMO of course!

Yes, few days ago I had 2 guys in a lobby arguing and one saying he would report every player at about 800+ because they must be modders or something.

That number is there to allow degenerates to communicate with you by helping them decide whether to address to you as 'noob' or 'modder', depending on where they stand on the rank scale compared to you.

I understand the system as far as unlocking things like more cars and other vehicle types to purchase, guns etc. but I'm not a fan of the locked clothing items. With the guns and cars these are things you can actually use but a shirt or hat is something we should get right off the bat if you ask me.
