Nods to movies - amusement and poignant

Recommended Posts

It is common knowledge that GTA V is rife with nods & winks to films/movies. Some of them are specifically for amusement only and some, we feel, have a relevance tied in with the overarching GTA V mystery.

The motivation for this post is two fold - firstly, to discuss nods and references to movies that we/you consider poignant in terms of the mystery and in equal measure, nods we would have liked to see in GTA V.

This is not intended to be an open "discuss all theories" thread - there is obviously a plethora of material on the gta forums and the rest of the www surrounding this impelling mystery/game. It is a focus on nods to movies that is key here.

I find the whole mystery compelling and have followed the wonderful work that the mystery hunters have done since the games release. Although a "GTAV 100%er" I'm far too busy in the real world with family and work to dedicate myself to the cause. Having said that I recently completed the game once more and found one film reference/nod to stick out like a sore thumb. After choosing option C, the last line of dialogue Michael says before credits roll is "Be afraid Franklin, be very afraid". This is from the film The Fly and it is said to Franklin. Franklin is the only character you as the player is guaranteed to have post story. Obviously not Michael or Trevor (if chosen a or b). So I believe Franklin is the key to unlocking any possible UFO (playable) or Jet-Pack (playable) Easter Egg. ... and yes The Fly - both these fly!

So my choice of MOST poignant nod is Michaels The Fly reference both for it's meaning, who it's said to and timing in the game. My choice for nods I would like to have seen in the game has to be Dr Richard Kimble form The Fugitive - "I have just left you a big clue" - if you have to ask me why?, you'll never know!

Honourable mentions - 1. What I believe to be a Back To The Future nod in Lesters house. The post it note with a car and 88 written above it - we all know what happens when the DeLorean reaches 88mph! If only GTAV (un-modded) has a speedometer. Would love to take the Space Docker for a spin he he! 2. The most obvious "Stay Frosty" - Aliens - see where I'm going.

Anyway, would love to hear your choice of both what nod you would like to have seen and what nod you believe is most poignant in terms of the mystery. You never know one day R* may make a movie on GTA and the mystery may well be revealed. If only Ted Rogers and Dusty Bin were around they may well solve it.

Good topic..

Been a while since I played V's story and I haven't felt compelled to complete the story for a second time so I can't remember many references. However, I did watch a film on Netflix called Thief (1981) by Michael Mann. The soundtrack is by Tangerine Dream and some of the visual aspects reminded me of the heists in GTA V, especially the music.

At 3 mins in you can see some GTA V-style action. Might be a coincidence but I think not.

@ Mister Pink - nice mention. Yes, Michael Mann Directed "Heat" too. And the ramming of Pick-Up truck in GTA V is in itself a movie reference. It's quite unusual too as it is an action reference and not a dialogue one. And of course Miami Vice he directed too - need I say Tommy Vercetti (Vice City)?!

Cheers, yeah I saw the Heat one too, straight away. It is nice to see an action reference and it wouldn't be the first time. Remember the chase after you in a truck through the aqueducts in San Andreas?

I love these references.
