I know is hard to develop a mobile app but how about a GTA F App ?
I'm sure GTA F Mobile users would enjoy + it could expand GTA F community a bit :p

The forum board already has a mobile version that appears on mobile browsers as default....

Why the need to develop a dedicated app that isn't necessary, when a book mark in your mobile browser is more than sufficient? Any app would be little more than a link to the mobile site anyway.

I think an app would be more comfortable rather than going to your browser :)

I think the Mobile Theme is fairly good for browsing the forum. Having a separate app would be a hassle. What extra functionality would that provide over the current Mobile Theme?

Sorry I didn't know that

Well sometimes the browser give you some strange errors and in my opinion having an app for GTA F would make the Mobile users experience more enjoyable

Also on browser you have to chose between 2 options

1 Normal Version which is kindoff outdated

2 Full veersion which is good but sometimes seems a bit off let's say

There already is a mobile version of this forum.

We used to have the same thread as this.

I don't think it's necessary, mobile version is good enough. Making an app would just waste additional time from.... Oh, who would create it BTW?

And:

''Any app would be little more than a link to the mobile site anyway.''

This.

Thanks for the suggestion :) It's probably not going to happen, just because we have other things on our priority list right now. The mobile skin works good enough, and once we upgrade to IPB4 (we will eventually) then that'll bring even more improvements for mobile browsing. An app might be cool but it's not something anyone has time to dedicate to, especially when it's not really needed in the first place.

Considering that mobile users are on top 2 on "Browsing GTA Forums Devices" an app might not be so bad for mobile users
But yeah maybe for now a browser would be enough although the experince is pretty bad :(

Yeah like I said an app might be cool, but we still don't have time or anyone to do it, unfortunately.

Someday, maybe!

There's no difference between using the mobile theme or an app as a user. The worse side of the deal is actually for the staff who browses on mobile.

You can still use it on your broswer, so there is no need for this.

The mobile version of this site can be pretty sh*t tbh, some of the basic functionality (like everything other than the basic text field) seems to decide randomly whether it wants to show up or not. Mobile version or forcing desktop version. Which can be frustrating, as can having all the a text formatting you manually enter refuse to be recognized as bbcode. Both of which I've encountered on multiple browsers, on multiple devices.

That said, none of the problems I've encountered can be fixed by the staff, short of coding their own mobile os, their own browser, their own board software, or possibly all of the above.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, because maybe this isn't ALWAYS the case, but aren't most apps of the type describe just basically wrappers for an existing browser (or part of one) anyway? For all intents and purposes a browser, dressed up as if it weren't one, limited to just one site, with all the problems (and possibly more) of whatever browser you currently use, as well as having less functionality? Because that seems like an exercise in stupidity to me.

That said, stupid seems to be what lots of people (especially mobile users) seem to want nowadays. Something you already have, only worse, and dressed up like it's somehow different. Maybe there's some kind of easy, open source, idiot proof tool you can use to make one of these horrible things, then slap some ads in there and let them pay for their stupidity.

Step 4: profit?

Wouldn't it just be easier to create a web app compared to building one from scratch? I'm not entirely sure if that would solve the problem, but maybe it would satisfy those asking for an app.

Then again, a web app (not sure if anything like this exists on iOS) is just pretty much viewing a site without traditional browser features, such as typing in a different URL, and so on.

Bump.

As I'm getting better at coding, I could possible make a prototype of a GTAF mobile app when I have the time and experience. I'll rebump when I'm ready to do so.

Well you guys really dont need to develop a app by yourself...Many websites gives us ability to make our own app..So if you wanna make an app just visit them.Even I have made a website and then made an app for it.So visit those sites and make the app..Then just make a thread for it in forums...The easierst way....Am I right or not?

What you all need to remember is that running and maintaining these Forums takes time and that the Staff, Admins & Mods here don't have all the time in the world. The GTAForums have been around since 2001, and to be fair, it's developed well and has a good 710,000+ members. Undeniably, GTAF gains a lot of traction, and it's not as simple to maintain it as you all seem to make it out to be.

Application wise, though I agree the mobile version of the site is pretty awful, it is possible to switch to the desktop version, and yes, I know it still isn't the most convenient, but it's something. A mobile app would, of course, be nice, and I'd totally support it if the team decided to go ahead with it, but it isn't crucial, and to be fair, it isn't really all that necessary. Yes, there are many pros to having a mobile application, but also a few cons if you think about it.

While a mobile app would make GTAF more accessible on the go, and it would likely increase the number of members deciding to join GTAF, it will likely develop issues, like more strain on the servers upholding the site, I mean there's occasionally issues when a certain topic or two gets publicised off-site, and several hundred people are viewing it, and that with our current capacity. Also, building, developing and maintaining such an application surely would take some time, especially if they wanted to "get it right", I mean you wouldn't want a broken app, right?

Fact is, you just have to deal with the options you have now, and appreciate what you have, as well as appreciate the work of the GTAF Team, regardless of whether you want a mobile app or not, they're always working hard administrating and moderating these forums, and to have them decide to make a mobile app, or something of the sort, will require much more time and effort, which in reality is limited to what the team can do. They run these forums, but they also have their own personal lives, you know, work, family, and general personal time. You couldn't possibly ask them to work any harder to be completely fair.

-snip-

THIS! ^

Just create some beautiful apple touch icons + the icons for chrome browser, maybe even a startup image and your website is ready to be saved as a web app on IOS (using Safari) and on Android (using Chrome).

This is all what people should expect. Creating a native app from scratch isn't worth the time for forums. APIs needs to be created in order to receive data (or the server needs to send the data in another way), the app's design needs to be made per platform (IOS and Android (Windows phone?)) and the app needs to be updated when changes are made to the server or when there are bugs in the app. This whole idea just causes more requests to the server + hours of work.

But a web app would be a nice little thing which won't be used by many people. Not that many people even know something about web apps.....

However, the mobile website really needs an update. Fast reply and normal reply doesn't even have a big difference (other than the fact that you go to another page when choosing for the normal reply option), I don't know all the BBcodes, so I had those moments were I would just give up and not even post my message to a thread, because AFAIK there are no buttons that will do the work with the BBcodes stuff (but the desktop version does have that).

An app or a better website, I don't mind. But, I can't use emojis available on desktop version, look at the date people joined, and their signatures. Any way to do that?

My tablet doesn't display the mobile version by default and I have to select it manually, so yeah, an app would be nice. But the staff here are always working hard to improve the website, so I'm happy selecting Mobile Version manually if it means the website is better overall.
