Why the need to develop a dedicated app that isn't necessary, when a book mark in your mobile browser is more than sufficient? Any app would be little more than a link to the mobile site anyway. The mobile skin works good enough, and once we upgrade to IPB4 (we will eventually) then that'll bring even more improvements for mobile browsing. SWEETSAPRIK Posted March 12, 2017 Share Posted March 12, 2017 The mobile version of this site can be pretty sh*t tbh, some of the basic functionality (like everything other than the basic text field) seems to decide randomly whether it wants to show up or not. Mobile version or forcing desktop version. Which can be frustrating, as can having all the a text formatting you manually enter refuse to be recognized as bbcode. Both of which I've encountered on multiple browsers, on multiple devices. That said, none of the problems I've encountered can be fixed by the staff, short of coding their own mobile os, their own browser, their own board software, or possibly all of the above. Correct me if I'm wrong here, because maybe this isn't ALWAYS the case, but aren't most apps of the type describe just basically wrappers for an existing browser (or part of one) anyway? For all intents and purposes a browser, dressed up as if it weren't one, limited to just one site, with all the problems (and possibly more) of whatever browser you currently use, as well as having less functionality? Because that seems like an exercise in stupidity to me. That said, stupid seems to be what lots of people (especially mobile users) seem to want nowadays. Something you already have, only worse, and dressed up like it's somehow different. Maybe there's some kind of easy, open source, idiot proof tool you can use to make one of these horrible things, then slap some ads in there and let them pay for their stupidity. Step 4: profit? I'm not entirely sure if that would solve the problem, but maybe it would satisfy those asking for an app. Then again, a web app (not sure if anything like this exists on iOS) is just pretty much viewing a site without traditional browser features, such as typing in a different URL, and so on. Jacobmaate Posted July 10, 2017 Share Posted July 10, 2017 What you all need to remember is that running and maintaining these Forums takes time and that the Staff, Admins & Mods here don't have all the time in the world. The GTAForums have been around since 2001, and to be fair, it's developed well and has a good 710,000+ members. Undeniably, GTAF gains a lot of traction, and it's not as simple to maintain it as you all seem to make it out to be. Application wise, though I agree the mobile version of the site is pretty awful, it is possible to switch to the desktop version, and yes, I know it still isn't the most convenient, but it's something. A mobile app would, of course, be nice, and I'd totally support it if the team decided to go ahead with it, but it isn't crucial, and to be fair, it isn't really all that necessary. Yes, there are many pros to having a mobile application, but also a few cons if you think about it. While a mobile app would make GTAF more accessible on the go, and it would likely increase the number of members deciding to join GTAF, it will likely develop issues, like more strain on the servers upholding the site, I mean there's occasionally issues when a certain topic or two gets publicised off-site, and several hundred people are viewing it, and that with our current capacity. Also, building, developing and maintaining such an application surely would take some time, especially if they wanted to "get it right", I mean you wouldn't want a broken app, right? Fact is, you just have to deal with the options you have now, and appreciate what you have, as well as appreciate the work of the GTAF Team, regardless of whether you want a mobile app or not, they're always working hard administrating and moderating these forums, and to have them decide to make a mobile app, or something of the sort, will require much more time and effort, which in reality is limited to what the team can do. They run these forums, but they also have their own personal lives, you know, work, family, and general personal time. You couldn't possibly ask them to work any harder to be completely fair. But the staff here are always working hard to improve the website, so I'm happy selecting Mobile Version manually if it means the website is better overall.
