Will Rockstar ever back to realism?

Recommended Posts

[...]

Nowadays, Rockstar love adding futuristic stuff to GTA Online. That thing has made me wonder if they will back to focusing on realism in the next GTA, like they did in GTA IV.

Will we ever see a realistic GTA, or we should rather accept a new Rockstar's way with all that wacky sh*t in GTA? Discuss.

I think GTA 6 will be a compromise between realistic and "goofy" style. I don't expect GTA 6 being as over-the-top as GTA 5 was.

I really hope that GTA 6 will be more realistic. I liked Saints Row, but I always liked GTA more for it's realism. I don't say that GTA will end up as Saints Row, but it would be a shame to see GTA become less and less realistic.

After that rocket car they added to GTA Online, I really doubt it.

After that bast*rd child that Gta ONLINE is , i don't see a bright future for the singleplayer mode of the next GTA.

Rockstar smells quick money with online and silly small stuff added to it that every twelve year old has to have and whines to mother to get him some more gta dollars.

But i guess it's gonna be very toned down the realism , like the posts above suggest.

It's like, III through SA and the Stories games were like a bunch of movie references in an arcadey game.

Then IV was a straight up movie you could play. It still had a lot of references, even certain angles of viewing the city (leave first apartment, drive toward beach, make a right, the view of Manhattan/Algonquin for example) that were pulled straight from classic films. The main thing is that it was super realistic and movie-like.

V then became more of like a TV show than a movie. It was like Lethal Weapon TV show and other shows like that, as well as a lot drawn from other shows like Sons of Anarchy (even though this was also done for Lost and Damned, it was in the proper settings this time), and Breaking Bad and so on. I don't think it came out very good, though.

I really hope they go back to the cinematic realism and stray away from the TV junk they used, and if they use TV again, to do it better and focus more on those Sons and Breaking type feelings and less on those quasi action/sitcom shows like Lethal Weapon. I know Lethal Weapon began airing only recently, but it comes to mind because they steal a lot from GTA V in that show and it's a good example of "that kind of show".

V was more over the top because people whined and moaned about the realism in IV but now that people are whining about the over the top nature of V they might back to being realistic. When 7 comes out it will be wacky again after people whine about the realism in 6.

IV was your nitty-gritty indie crime thriller/ dark documentary, V was a top-budget-no-expense-spared batsugar crazy Hollywood production. Both fit their respective settings very well, so I'd say it depends on the location that the next GTA is set and therefore the pop culture that inspires it.

http://gtaforums.com/topic/876645-is-gta-iv-too-realistic/

Take a look at this thread I made in the GTA IV forum. It seems most people are in agreement that GTA IV wasn't even that realistic. Then GTA V came a long and Saints Row'ed things with stupid sh*t like peyote plants that turn you into rabbits, dogs, alien/clown hallucinations, gimmicky weapons like the rail gun etc.

To me what I got from that thread is most people feel that GTA IV had a greater sense of belief, but at its core it's still an unrealistic game. Niko can do things that no human could possibly do in real life. If the question was will GTA VI return to the gritty, gimmick free nature of GTA IV I think that would be better and in that case I don't see why not.

However it depends on the setting. I think Vice City would embrace that wild and zany nature of GTA V, but a Boston, Chicago etc I could see being more grounded and sensible like GTA IV.

Kinda hard to go back into realism with things like the Ruiner 2000 and Rocket Voltic around. Not to mention all the other special vehicles added recently.

The answer was for Rockstar give a balance, not go from one extreme to the other. Even then, most people who criticised V didn't have much of an issue with it being wacky and a little over the top - it drew criticism largely due to it's uninteresting theme, boring storyline, and unappealing, bland characters. And also the lack of interactive content and wastefulness of the map too.

You're taking shots at the wrong target. As always.

Nah, it's easy. Just don't bring them back in GTA Next.

Newer GTA games are too serious, not what people call "realistic" (hardly realistic when you can fix health by eating candy/hotdog) ... GTA5 just took the seriousness of GTA4 and tried to add some wackiness to it. This caused imbalance throughout the entire game, from everything to the accuracy of cops to the stupid mission structure and car damage model.

Simply put, a game like GTA does not lend itself well to having both in the same game. Either go full serious alas GTA4 or go full wacky alas Saints Row/Older GTA games, but don't go both otherwise you end up with the unbalanced mess that is GTA5.

Personally I feel GTA has lost its

throughout the years and wouldn't mind wacky again. Edited by Yinepi

You can't really go back to something you never had in the first place. Well, the futuristic stuff is more of a recent thing, but there has been plenty of non-realistic stuff for along time (jet packs, jars of green goo, golden tanks in the PS1 days, etc.).

I think something inherently unrealistic shouldn't try to pretend it is, like GTA IV did. At the very least, not to the extent that it sacrifices vehicles and features.

(Not that it was a bad game, or that GTA V has perfected things - not by a long shot. But they removed too much, and it's weird seeing an innately unrealistic game trying to act mature). GTA was probably at its best in the PS2 days, in my opinion.

I think Single player will remain realistic but online? I don't mind that having unrealistic things added to it. I'd like to see some alien invasions on there among other things.

I don't think so. Kinda weird to see things like the Tron bike and rocket car in GTA, though. If anything these things will continue to be restricted to Online.

The new crap on V can stay there. Realistic vehicles, weapons, abilities is all well, witha few oddballs in there. Online has gotten out of control.

At this rate I'm surprised the jetpack hasn't already been brought back in Online.

It's all about striking a balance. By and large, the main story missions in V are played with a straight bat as are a lot of the side activities. A measured amount of lighter, less realistic content is welcome to break up the monotony. Remember that, if anything, it's GTA:IV (and TLAD) that is the odd one out in the series with it's level of seriousness and relative realism.

But I don't think GTA:V has gone as extreme as Saints Row did with all the wacky crap. I think GTA:V strikes a nice balance. GTA:Online has only recently added some more outlandish stuff, but obviously these are extra toys to play with and not part of the main story.

When was GTA suppose to be realistic?

The entire 3D era was crazy as it can be. Just remember the mission Kingdom come in GTA 3.

GTA4 tried something new with its advanced physics and graphics, but you still could heal gun shot wounds with eating hot dogs :D

Yeah but if this happened Rockstar would price it at 30 million just to encourage hacking.

Rockstar can add futuristic stuff or whatever they want, why should that be an important "criteria" for realism in a fictional universe ??

How can you say that the "whole" game isn't as realistic as IV, or lacking focus on realism, based on just the presence of some futuristic items.

GTA universe has too many unrealistic things to count. So having a couple of futuristic stuff won't make V that different from IV. The focus on realism has not shifted nor changed in V that you are talking about Rockstar to return in future. Both IV and V have many things that breaks certain semblance of realism.

The only difference between both games is that V balances "realism" and "fun" in a much better way than IV.

IV sacrificed a lot of fun for realism, which strangely people seem to care least about losing from GTA games, but start bitching about V because it tried to bring the fun back without sacrificing the realism altogether.

This notion of "..just don't bring [ insert an item - say, jetpack!] back in GTA Next" to favor realism over fun, as if that'll make the game realistic is the most absurd, and bizarre way of turning a game into "realistic".

Is it too difficult for people to just ignore using futuristic items that you believe makes the game unrealistic or breaks the immersion, than suggesting to drop them from the game entirely, without caring about the player's choice and freedom to decide how they want to play the game??

Rockstar has actually done a great thing by ignoring anti-GTA lobbies of misguided fans who are highly allergic to fun and believe that GTA 4 was the best thing to ever happen in the series.

I would like if the next GTA would be more realistic than GTA 5 and Online,no TRON bikes,no skeleton bikes,no flip cars...(unless they are only accessible by cheat codes,or have to be unlocked by doing some side activities or something).

Previously,GTA has always managed to be somewhere in the middle, not as realistic and serious as Mafia games, but not as over the top wacky as Saints Row,I would like if it would continue to be somewhere between those.

Honestly, they SHOULD just add lazer guns and flying saucers to GTAOnline. Add as much stupid sh*t they can pack in. May as well, not like anyone respects GTAOnline as it is now as a serious game.

I think they should keep all the things they are doing however they shouldn't be introduced into the storyline and should be there for the player to discover. Think of them as easter eggs.

What I mean is that to get these things they can add an easter eggs like the Chilliad mystery but when you complete them (that is if they add one unlike the misleading mess in the game) you get the ruiner 2000 as a reward for example. Basicly what I am trying to say is that they can add fun things but they should be considered uncanon and not bleed into the storyline.

This exactly.

Keep the story somewhat serious, don't try to go for the cheap laugh in sacrifice of a genuine dramatic moment.

I think as fans that dislike that vibe of V we're partly to blame as we lambasted IV for taking itself too seriously. In hindsight, whether you like the story of IV or not, it's not 'realism' that pissed people off, it was the lack of counter things to do outside of the story. IV was like, this is story and the map and game-play are bound to it. Where as with San Andreas, while the story had fantastical moments given by secondary characters like The Truth, a lot of the drama of that story was serious and real. The difference was, San Andreas had a way more variety of things to do and explore outside of the story. So IV is amazing in many many ways but for me is an incomplete GTA (in my fantasy of a perfect GTA). Having the peripheral things, flying planes, rewarding collectibles and more clothes and car customisation and countryside would have made it perfect for me.

With the reaction of some of us with IV, Rockstar swung the series' story with V to the far end of the spectrum with V's goofy-buddy-cop style homage to 80's/90's action flicks which all felt very light-hearted and passe.

With the Next installment I hope to see Rockstar return to a more serious story such as the tone of III, San Andreas, Vice City, IV. You can have serious crime side-missions related to the story such as drug dealing, drug wars, gang territories, racketeering, burglary, pimping, an updated version of Police missions (almost seem to unrealistic now but I enjoyed doing the emergency vehicle missions to the reward element).

I still want some optional light hearted and surreal gameplay missions too. These don't have anything to to do with canon. They have nothing to do with realism or the story and should be considered fun for the sake of fun-videogaming. So, those of us who like a more condensed "realistic" GTA IV experience can have that. Those of us that like both can have that too.

Not to say a more serious story can't be funny at times either? The Wire or The Sopranos are pretty serious crime-dramas that often have funny moments. But the humour seems to blossom from the sitation and setting more organically. The humour in V seems more forced. It's like it it's desperate to to have a voice.

I (this is just a personal opinion), think that R* will probably continue with this, instead of reverting back to more of a realistic game. This so-called "wacky sh*t" is basically a way of interesting players. It doesn't necessarily appeal to everyone, but I think that the GTA games are one of those games that allow players to really essentially do what they like. Not just as a free roam map, but also with players being able to do so many different things (especially now with GTA Online), which R* are making an absolute piss tonne of money, and it's been quite a success for them. In that sense, I don't think R* will be planning on getting rid of this "wacky sh*t".
