Sequels that outdid the originals

Recommended Posts

SonOfLiberty

Normally I have reservations on sequels. Especially those to universally acclaimed classics because most turn out to be disappointing both critically and financially.

So yeah pretty straight forward. What sequels do you consider that reached the heights of their predecessor(s) and even bettered them?

For me Terminator 2: Judgement Day hands down. IMO it's the only Terminator movie to be superior to the original as the rest have been garbage.

I loved The Terminator, but Judgement Day is one of those movies I'd call near flawless. Not to mention at the time in 1991 it was a technological marvel being one of the first movies to utilise CGI.

Just a great movie that managed to retain what the original did and raised the bar even higher. Should've ended there though.

Any new James Bond movie?

Now, I am not from the 80s or 90s who witnessed the original James Bond on the big screen but I watched a handful of the movies of those times. And personally, the newer James Bond aka Daniel Craig has delivered top-notch acting. To me, he will always be the Tobey of James Bond.

Can't disagree with Terminator 2. It's one of my favourite films. I like the first one and it did very well for an indie-film. Terminator 2 just ramped it up to 11.

Godfather 2 (but this changes with each vision... sometimes i like it more, sometimes i like it less than the original)

Terminator 2 (no doubt)

The Dark Knight (the best in the nolan saga)

Spiderman 2 (NOT the "amazing" one)

Indiana jones and the last crusade (personal preference, i've never really liked the first two)

AlienTwo

Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

Those spring immediately to mind.

I'll agree on T2 and Spiderman, and I coul even possibly buy into Indy 3, but 1 was quite good.

Superman 2.

The Empire Strikes Back.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Mad Max 2.

Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps.

Evil Dead 2

Godfather Part 2

Addams Family Values

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with the general consensus that T2 is a better film than The Terminator because you're all wrong. T2 is a kids movie in comparison and watching Arnie play the Terminator as a good guy is a f*cking embarrassment for all concerned. That stupid thumbs up at the end cements it as a movie designed for and by idiots. No offence like, but it is.

Also, if you think that Aliens is better than Alien you're completely incorrect.

Wrong medium, bud.

Captain America the Winter Soldier and Civil War are both superior to the First Avenger. Although, lets face it, they have more to work with thanks to the Avengers and other MCU movies.

Oh sh*t I thought I was still in the gaming subforum. I can't really say much on movies. I haven't watched a movie or set foot in a movie theatre in over 4 years. I made a vow to myself to never watch a movie until I make one myself, as a way of forcing myself to stop being lazy and unleash the artistic genius inside me.

I guess I can weigh in on movies that I watched long ago, though.

The Star Wars prequel trilogy was constantly outdoing itself. Hell, the entire series was.

Ep 2 was better than Ep 1. Ep 3 was better than 2.

Similarly, Ep 5 was better than Ep 4 and Ep 6 was better than Ep 5.

I cannot comment on The Force Awakens because I have not seen it yet.

i really don't consider Godfather 2 as a part 2. its the same book just split into 2 movies, nowadays the movies are combined and in chronological order when shown on tv

While Vito's early life WAS actually part of the book, Michael's section is - as far as i can remember - totally new. The interaction between pacino and Cazale still gives me goosebumps (expecially the "I'm smart" dialogue).

And no, the TV version is an horrible mistake... the movie IS told out of order, and that's the best way to reinforce the differences between the cold but "human" nature of Vito and the ruthless path of Michael in Part 2

Nah....

It's a part of the charm of running joke/theme throughout the film of an android learning colloquials, human expressions and idioms and when explained to the android, it often puts a mirror up in front of us and makes us reflect on how absurd and complex humanity is. Here is the Android, a learning computer, using the thumbs up, expressing itself as he terminates. Not because it has any emotion or he thinks it cool. It's something learned from humans and it's kind of silly humans do it in a way. But the kid gets emotionally attached, a flaw or a beautiful thing for humans. For the android, it's nothing. I'm going to terminate now, seeya - thumbs up.

I love these these moments because it seems to make it more real. If a learning computer android came from the future and was at the beck and call of a young teenage boy he may be more inclined to say or do goofy things it learns from the 14 year old kid. If it came back to protect Rick James or Bootsy Collins it may say even more goofier sh*t.

What would I know, I just an idiot Fuzz... ya guy! :D

Beauty and the Beast 3: Beauty Strikes Again.

It as a masterpiece of modern movies.

I would love to go back in time and sit Adolf Hitler down in a chair and make him watch it.

He probably would have been accepted into art school.

No, but seriously, just to add on to that; aside from the amazing human and droid relationships in Blade Runner, the father-figure relationship between the Terminator and John Connor is one of the best in all of film. The writing had far more depth and substance than the original Terminator. This scene framed the relationship:

At the end, it comes full circle when he says, "I know now why you cry." :(:( Hits me in the feels everytiem.

Some people said Road Warrior which I agree with, but I would also say that Fury Road was even better. That movie is crazy fun to watch no matter how many times I've already seen it.

I know, I can't describe art without sounding like a pretentious twat. :(

Thanks for the vid, I was actually looking for something that that yesterday :D I love the say Sarah's reflection at the end of the vid. It's sort of a sad reality.

Having said that all that. The original Terminator is a great indie-flick. It's it's own beast but Terminator 2 built upon it, fleshed it out and made it more deep.

I hear World War III Nuclear Boogaloo is coming out soon.

I prefer Lethal Weapon 2 over 1, maybe an unpopular opinion, they're all good though.
