When You Abandon the Gameplay and Roam…

The gameplay always finds me. There's no escaping it.

Sometimes, I like to pretend I'm not paying attention to my surroundings and let peeps "sneak" up on me. They're usually too busy being stealthy to notice the proximity mines I've peppered along their path. So maybe think twice before deciding to ambush that seemingly unobservant blonde in the clothing store; she might be expecting you. Especially if she's me.

Tonight, I decided to see just how lazy I could be. I pranced around my yacht in a bikini and waited for the inevitable troll air raid. On four different occasions, four different jet jockeys dared to defy the odds of surviving my yacht's anti-air defenses in the hopes of murdering me senselessly. Every, single, time, they were blown out of the sky by my fully armed and operational barbie boat. And every, single, time, they immediately hopped on a jet ski on the rebound and blazed a trail to the aft-end of my floating fortress of cuteness and despair, perhaps thinking they'd settle the score face to face. And every, single, time, they triggered the little proximity mines that were waiting for them. All I had to do was chill behind one of the wet bars on the top deck and wait for the explosions.

One guy even fell for the same trick twice! I can only assume he thought I was too dumb to mine both sides of the aft dive deck (or whatever it's called). I was so impressed that I even took a selfie with his second carbon scored crater after the dust settled.

I happen to love the small islands off the coast, but I wish there were more to do in and around the water as a whole. Nevertheless, it's very peaceful and the scenery is always quite nice.

I agree with you on this. I have been accessing my Kraken a lot, lately, and while it's super slow, once you get out to the different islands, it's stupid fun to pop out of the top, explore for a while, and jump back in and go. The underwater scenery is really beautiful and like you said, very peaceful. Also, knowing that there's complete chaos going on back in the city always seems to keep me on my guard, never knowing when some jet-seeker might come to inspect what "that guy is doing out on those islands." It happens more often than I appreciate! lol!

Ahh, yeah; I love the Kraken! One of the most fun and underrated vehicles in the game. :D

If it were possible, I'd definitely buy a property on one of those islands; it wouldn't even need to have an elaborate setup--it could even just be a tent with a small place to dock a boat. It's the perfect escape from the hectic city life.

The Kraken is a blast; just wish there was a large enough variant of it to allow for more of a submarine experience. i.e. fit two players, and be able to stand up inside. More room inside would IMO give it a more immersive feel than the Kraken currently offers (as good as it is). I could see myself seriously wanting to cruise/snoop around in that. Some underwater craft that's faster than the Kraken would also help tremendously--cruising the outer edges of the map takes too long if you need to move quickly.

Also wish there were more to do or see underwater, or simply more connectivity with the game play in cities (for the most part, watercraft are "banished" to the outskirts of the map). The closest you can currently come to interaction with the Los Santos interior is the rather shallow Del Perro to Vespucci beach canal--would love to see more of these routing through various parts of the city and Sandy Shores (not just shallow streams traversible via Seashark), to provide more in-game interaction for/with water-based vehicles such as evasion, attack, or even an alternate means of transport. Again, some oil rigs would give watercraft their own "kingdoms" or domains to compete with the rather dominant city action.

This canal works well though (highly underused, IMO) because it extends all the way from one side of the map (beach area) to the boat bay area near the heliport. You can also lose a three-star wanted level when in the middle of the covered waterway; not sure about four or five stars--need to test that out:

I drive. I know that sounds overly simplistic but I like getting a car or if I'm feeling fancy a bike and just drive around the map looking at buildings and random crap. I do it because during my original play through on ps3 I really didn't explore Los Santos as I should because GTA was on a list of 20 games that I had to get through and I didn't deviate from the story campaign. For instance yesterday I found the playboy mansion at the ripe old level of 463.

Head out to Sandy Shores or into the Chiliad Wilderness, put headphones on, turn 'em up and just walk around listening to how good the sound design is in this game

In a heartbeat.

Mmm... peppered proximity mines. Now I'm hungry!

Abandon the gameplay? I don't find myself doing this very much. Thinking about it, you could probably catch me doing 3 things at any time. Contact missions with randoms, being a vip/ceo depending on the character and running jobs in public freeroam, killing players in public freeroam.

I find standing around doing nothing boring. To each their own but it's not really for me. I'm trying to do other things but always fall back on my normal routine work/kill.

If I try to do other things sooner or later someone starts a war. Basically I leveled my character up to 120 just doing invite only so everything in freeroam public sessions is new and awesome to me. I get an adrenaline rush every time another player's blip shows up on my minimap.

I don't really see the point in rare t-shirts because if a player is close enough to see my t-shirt one of us is about to die.

But anyhow OT does the Kraken spawn randomly? I found one by the pier north of Zancudo after doing a headhunter, got in it and cruised around and it was weirdly relaxing. Does that count?

The gameplay always finds me. There's no escaping it.

Alone or with other players:

  • offroading
  • stunting (for example playing "the floor is lava" in the Vinewood Hills area with a BF400, requiring you to jump from roof to roof)
  • terrorising NPCs (shooting tyres, using very fast or very ridiculous vehicles to run them over etc.)

With my crew:

  • hide & seek with personal vehicles (I hide a car and give a hint packed into a small story about a fictional person who allegedly owns the car.)
  • tourist excursions (We either ride a bus or drive in a convoy to certain landmarks and I tell a story that is either completely fictional or an official easter egg or a mix of both.)
  • themed car meets and group trips, occasionally including boats, helicopters and planes
  • Panto-mime (Players have to describe a word using cars, weapons and ingame gestures while others try to guess the word.)
  • Destruction derby style events in interesting places, sometimes involving unarmed helicopters battling each other (sometimes with each helicopter carrying one passenger with a shotgun)
  • drawn-out and chaotic "hold the fort" battles against the police

I like to hang around Vespucci Beach, the condos, the Vespucci Canals, very sweet and colorful area, some places are almost identical and remind me of LS in GTA: San Andreas.

Otherwise, I love hanging out in my Office, it's secluded, warm and cozy. I love the feeling of hearing all the explosions and havoc outside, but knowing I am safe and distant from all the chaos inside.

Or chilling on the Yacht, watching the sun rise in the thub.

Time spent outside of the competitive gamemodes on gtaiv was spent lollygaging in freemode... Nothing has changed! LOL

I always have like an hour of grind time and an hour of down time when I hop on. Too much of one thing has me switching games.

* drawn-out and chaotic "hold the fort" battles against the police

Did this once with a friend (defending a metro tunnel entrance), and we ended up making friends with several more random players who wanted to join in on the fun.

Was a hoot. :) The metro tunnels and underground in general are a great place to go when things get crazy on the surface.

I also discovered a rather simple but very defendable building recently (even from jet griefers)...just because I got bored and started wandering around.

the J is for Julia

My group of close friends and I will do easter egg area explorations from time to time. Once, we staged a big X-Files-like dive and exploration of the UFO in the ocean at the north end of the map. We had Krakens, Cargobobs, divers, and boats. Most players were in suits. Unfortunately this was on PS4 before the editor was added to current gen consoles. Would have made a nice cinematic short.

Another of our favorites is to gather friendlies in a public lobby and pick a 10 to 15 story rooftop with good cover in the downtown area. We upset the police and keep the mayhem going to raise our wanted levels. The goal is to keep the chaos going without dying. If randoms in the lobby approach, we take them out. If someone dies, they hang out in passive until the last goes down.

When I’m cruising I usually take the Schafter V12 (Armored) or the Vigero. The V12 is fun for troll protection when a random decides to toss a sticky my way or fire a few shots into the windshield. The Vigero is just fun to cruise in. It has enough umph to get away and enough weight to knock griefers out of the way. Just a fun car to sling around when fully modded.

I'm gonna have to join the other old guys and derail the thread further... Fellow, fogeys, cranks and geriatrics, I have before me a magic button. This button allows me to fix IV. I have pushed the button, would you go back?

I know I tried a couple of times, just after V came out when I had some very strong multiplayer withdrawal. It was terrible, the only people left were the god mode warriors and people who've never played. The cheaters were lovin it because only one person per session seemed to know how to vote to kick. #thankgodformaxpayne3.

Then after I had heard they wiped everyone's rank, just long enough to confirm that yes they did in fact remove them, for me it was completely dead right then and there. None of my friends play it anymore, the ranks are gone and I'm older and different now. Can't go back to what doesn't exist anymore.

For me, this new Online is better, particularly since upgrading, there's elements of IV there and lots of improvement too. I got a taste of turf wars last night when a biker gang I joined did some sort of hold the fort type job and then the other team started one after in a new location. But we never had a Rhino in turf wars! It was awesome.

Sure the Annihilator sucks, but it sucked n IV too until circle strafing became a thing, the explosive ammo became a game changer. As in switch lobbies or maybe even games cause there's no hope now. It was awesome to be on either end of that because of the skill involved. If you hopped in it today and instantly started wrecking everyone wouldn't that feel empty? It would for me. I think the chopper is there to remind the past kind of sucks.

Cops n Crooks? Got nothing for ya, I miss it like a dead dog and I miss those as much as a person can. But I have faith we will get something similar again. I loved IV too, it was the first online multiplayer game I ever played, nothing has felt like it since, but she's aged worse than any of my exes.

Back OT: another thing I do when bored in Online is to sign out and make long winded posts on gtaforums. Old man type ramblings that hark back to the days of steam powered pocket watches and brontosaurus meat at eleven cents a pound.

Well to be fair, the Annihilator circle strafing became a thing almost within 2 months of the game being out lol, I remember players like charger, blue7, Lin, myself, and a bunch of other old names using the helis early on.

And I completely agree with the feeling of seeing your rank wiped. I went back a while ago but I think it was on my laptop and not a PS3, because I threw out my PS3 when GTA 5 came to PS4, and seeing my glorious level 10 character with a 0 just made the game feel soulless. The graphics were strange but also kind of nice in a way and there were definitely things I missed about the game.

I just hate the fact that this GTA 5 is literally all about money, ignoring the obvious shark cards and the developers using more ways to earn money (which I have no real problem with as long as it doesn't ruin the game) , but even in the game, it's so money driven that it's not the same. I remember if you found one of the rare cars in GTA 4, a bunch of us would drive it around the city doing drivebys.... And these are top level players that are dominating the DM & TDM leaderboards, and high level pilots, all sitting in some rare car driving around screwing around.

When in GTA Online do you see top level players doing sh*t like that? I never see it, they're always in Jets, or spawning killing people with their turbos and for what? the community recognition is not the same these days either.

There's really way too many things to talk about with GTA 4/5 but man if they re-made it on PS4 were the modders can't get to it, I'd be on there in a heartbeat, right back in the glorious annihilator and the buzzard dogfighting.

Also, I made my own dogfighting arenas in GTA 5 creator with Annihilators and Buzzards just so I could have a bit of that old feeling back, but these Jet noobs never wanna play me :(

My favorite hobby is flying, be it the duster, mammatus, miljet, vestra, velum and sometimes choppers. I love doing touch and go's, enjoying raton canyon, the sunset or sunrise from above. The dodo also brought new meaning for pilots. The weird part is that is that I cannot do sh*t with my hydra, i cannot hit a white car with xenons turn on at night. And i'm always with the radar and hud off on first person view so the passive mode is my "flares".

Since I am one of the only people who does not like super cars (At least it feels that way sometimes), I tend to hang out in the mountains with my saber turbo or pick up (I keep it in case I have friends to play with one day). My favorite thing is when I am up on the mountains and I get a bounty on myself. I get to see all these supercars getting stuck and spinning out all over the place while they try to climb the mountains. Not like I'm am amazing driver or anything, but in that situation you don't even really have to get in your car. Just sit at the top and see who manages to actually get to the top of the hill without completely destroying their vehicle.

Aside from that I like searching the shore line on foot or bike (with pedals) for interesting things. Search out nice hang outs. Small islands, that kind of thing. Not so lucky on the islands so far. Water seems to be mostly empty, but that could just be because I swim places by hand so my searching is super inefficient. You'd be surprised but I'm level 44 off of just doing this kind of thing. I've only done the first heist even. You know, cause heists with PS4 randoms...get. I guess if anyone ever wants to go on a bike ride ^_^.

Another thing I get great joy from, especially at this time of year, is to go into Passive and deliver holiday Hearse gifts to unsuspecting players.

I'll fly over to a level 38 or 72, hover above them in a Cargobob with the Hearse attached, and send a message, "Happy holidays, Chum!"

Then I drop it lower it down to them. I'd say, 7 out of 10 will drive off in it, sending a "thanks, man!" back to me.

The other 3 out 10 blow up the Hearse and try to RPG my Cargobob. I call them Ebenezers.

That's a great idea. :) My hat's off to anyone who does something other than just kill other players--creativity and goodwill FTW. Have spawned one or two Dubsta 2s in free roam and given them to random players just because. I'm always happy to help out any player who is sincere and not malicious.

Similar to what MilatheRose likes to do on a bike, a guy last night was just cruising around on his bicycle near Strawberry doing tricks, etc. Was wary of him at first (have to be that way in this game), but was soon clear he was just having good, clean fun, so I respected (and enjoyed) watching him do some true free roaming. :)
