When You Abandon the Gameplay and Roam…

For many of us, there comes that point in the session when we get tired of the game routine.

Doing quick jobs, selling a car, fetching product, being killed or killing other players, strategizing about how you're going to get revenge, doing a Free Roam event, racing, getting pissed at NPCs for driving badly and making you crash, jet griefing, LJT calls, and so on.

That's about the time when you find yourself not playing the game anymore, and just wandering elsewhere and doing something completely off the grid, still "in the game," but just not participating any more.

So, what do you do when that happens? Where do you go? What kind of ride do you prefer? How long will you roam?

For me, I enjoy taking my BF400 into the Sandy Shores area and just running amok, bouncing over small jumps and catching big air, when I can.

I also like taking my Snapmatic and looking for interesting and obscure things to capture, even if I just delete them later.

And one of my more nefarious habits is to go to the outskirts on the highways and shoot out tires on trucks. I don't know why, but it just gives me the biggest kick to see them swerve, out of control, into other NPCs cars.

Last night, I spent a good hour trying to parachute atop the old lighthouse, with no success. I came close, only to slide right off, die and respawn into a Gang Attack! LOL!

But what about you? What is it that fills that void of being spawnkilled by a level 26 who is clearly much more skilled than his/her level indicates, and makes you just take off to nowheresland and roam free in the wild of GTAO?

Curious of the responses and how similarly we all play this game. Cheers! :)

When my normal routines are out of the way and I'm taking a break from jobs, I like to take a Muscle car to the swampy areas or off-road segments and plough through the mud and rough terrain aimlessly. I also like driving aimlessly down the beach in my BF surfer; finding ideas for pictures (though I haven't taken any in a long time); and just driving around (often in areas outside the city) in cars that I cannot use in races. After it's all said and done, I'll sometimes either retire to my Yacht and relax or take a trip in a boat around the island. I happen to love the small islands off the coast, but I wish there were more to do in and around the water as a whole. Nevertheless, it's very peaceful and the scenery is always quite nice.

I agree with you on this. I have been accessing my Kraken a lot, lately, and while it's super slow, once you get out to the different islands, it's stupid fun to pop out of the top, explore for a while, and jump back in and go. The underwater scenery is really beautiful and like you said, very peaceful. Also, knowing that there's complete chaos going on back in the city always seems to keep me on my guard, never knowing when some jet-seeker might come to inspect what "that guy is doing out on those islands." It happens more often than I appreciate! lol!

Ahh, yeah; I love the Kraken! One of the most fun and underrated vehicles in the game. :D

If it were possible, I'd definitely buy a property on one of those islands; it wouldn't even need to have an elaborate setup--it could even just be a tent with a small place to dock a boat. It's the perfect escape from the hectic city life.

I get it, but was thinking more along the lines of staying in GTAO and exploring, but those are both great games. New Austin will be mindblowing, for sure.

I just head into a public session, go passive and head over to psycho players and collect the cash the drop. Alternatively, I'll just grab my T20 or Shotaro (depending on the character) and cruise around.

Too often when I'm bored I end up just trying to get 5 stars then losing them by escaping, sometimes by car, sometimes by train, sometimes on foot, rarely in an aircraft though. Or heading to Grove Street and baiting the Ballas to fight the cops, that's always good fun imo.

My other favorite passtimes include;

skydiving / wingsuit / proxy flying

High diving

Bike stunting

"Freeing" hookers

Hitching rides on trucks

Rooftop sightseeing/sniping

Placing a Dubsta 2 bait car at LSC (w/ ignition bomb)

Sitting back in spectator mode

Ssshopping!

Just trying to say it's not easy to get bored in this game.

After doing crates and vip work, I then tend to kill players in my hydra while playing dirty.. but even that gets boring sometimes. I then grab my besra or hydra and fly around the entire map. Or, I dress up as a biker and ride on many of my chopper bikes around the county side. Kill some enemy bikers along the way, or possibly even just sit on the yacht and enjoy the view.

(Not every dirty player is bad :p:) )

I'd love to be a professional pilot one day, flying helicopters, planes or jets!

I get on the highway and drive a lap around the map. If I can't decide what to do after the drive I'll go admire a garage. I really enjoy this game with friends the most so I seek them out and we brainstorm stupid stuff to do.

You think you could last more than 20 mins on the ground without players trying to kill you?

My guess is no. :p

OT: I like driving all around the map, take in the scenery that I forget to appreciate.

Interesting, I only saw this post because I was searching GTA Online in google for info about the upcoming DLC, and your post was there.

As for the norm in this game, I only get online to screw around in freemode and join races these days. I don't need to bust my hump grinding money in missions or doing those ridiculously tedious CEO missions.

When I "Drift off" in GTAO, it's usually about the time where I start driving around the top half of the map remembering the glory days of GTA 4 online, and wishing they would add game modes and options from that game. I've sent tonnes of suggestions in but the most notable one that was patched in happened about a month after I sent it, when they added the functionality of disabling lock on rockets for the buzzard.

I don't think R* realise how much greater this game would be with options to turn cops off & blips off... I saw an article recently where a guy said "one thing you never thought of which will change GTA forever" and his 1 thing was turning blips off... Clearly he wasn't around in the great GTA 4 era when we would host "No blip bohan only freemodes" and have mixed gameplay where half the lobby would be in a heated sniper battle trying to find amazing hiding spots and search for others & the other half would use the "hide blip glitch" when getting into a car, and drive around like pedestrians looking for others doing the same thing so they could get a kill.

Those matches were honestly the most fun, and intense matches I've ever played on any game, and that includes all the raiding over the years and competitive matches.

But really there's not much left to do, when I get really bored I just get in my cop outfit, go get a cop car and go off-radar screwing around killing people before I log off and go play another game and wait for the next DLC.

Rockstar could have made this game so much better online, but honestly GTA4 was a better game, and this one they catered too much to the whinging CoD community.

When I saw the clown avatar, it was just so obvious. Clowns are evil. ;)

I just take a motorbike and try go a straight line regardless of hills, or some other vehicle. I kill any npc who uses bad language. I'm one for good manners. Manners maketh the man.

…remembering the glory days of GTA 4 online… GTA4 was a better game

@Wildfire_08, it's an arguable opinion regarding which game is better, but it's one I have to say that I tend to agree with.

For me, GTAIV had a much more integrated feel about it. I could spend 20 minutes fighting taxi drivers, just for fun. In GTAV/O, one punch is usually enough. And the NPCs in the GTAV/O are often scared by the mere appearance of a player, causing them to run off, flailing and screaming just because you parked your Futo.

But, those glory days were spectacular. It's a mathematical fact that 94.73% of a player's time spent in GTAIV's Multiplayer "Free Mode" was spent at the Airport, where just about all the action happened. The other 5.27% was spent at the magic swingset, trying to launch yourself skyward into oblivion.

GTAO offers so much more to the players who to simply stop playing "the game" and go off wandering, both technically with the graphics and with the small token bits found in the wilderness (eg. the Big orange ball, people hiking, roving gangs, Sentinel guy, etc).

I played GTAIV right up until I sold my old XB360 to buy the XB1 and tho' I don't regret it, I certainly miss the GTAIV experience. It was, again arguably, the best.

I'm with you fw.

I often find myself on my akuma anywhere in the country just looking for any bump I can find to get some good air.

I really wish there were some ramps at the airport or even in the country after a nice long straight but I can never seem to find any good ones.

Driving around on the east mountains is fun too, speeding across them and often down them as fast as I can go usually till I die or my bike ends up in the ocean lol

Right now I'm in love with my trophy truck. I can just drive around again and it's not boring at all. It's funny how a new vehicle can do that in this game. My Kuruma is jealous.

I just transferred so I'm still taking in all the new foliage and such as well, seriously. Last night it rained and the difference from last gen is huge! I had to stop and just watch the rain and lightning. As I was doing that some pair of clownshoes decided to shoot me in the back. I found myself yelling into the mic

"Bro! I was having a nice moment! You hateful dick!" Then everyone laughed at me. Good times were had by all.

I just transferred, and i'm still doing new things for me like biker or CEO jobs. But when i get bored i just meet a few friends, take some offroad cars and go nuts around the desert and mountains. Or maybe pick some bikes and have a relaxing ride around Blaine County. Exploring the map in first person, sometimes i walk around places. It changes the way you remember the buildings.

Just what i'd do in real life but with a few millions and cars more. And i can re-spawn if i throw myself from a mountain without parachute.

But when someone sees 15 dots chilling together makes us go back to a killing spree.

Graphically there is a much better immersion in this game than GTA 4, that's just the nature of progression in gaming, and I agree there is a higher volume of things to do, however I think the quality is not the same.

One of the thing I want in GTA 5 is for the ability to create free races & cannonball runs in the creator mode... It's simple really, all they have to do is give us the option to make the start of a race on foot. If you could force players to start on foot, by using the team start points from TDM, and then place cars in a car park nearby, you could essentially recreate races that were already in GTA 4 & even add to it by making races where you have to switch vehicle type half way through.

Not only that, but cops n crooks, turf war, chopper vs chopper, and many more great game modes that were in GTA 4 would be brilliant over in GTA 5. The cops off and blips off are the two biggies though... And honestly, If they made the ability to turn cops off a paid DLC only thing, then I'm absolutely sure most of the community would purchase it.

I wish GTA 4 would be remastered on PS4, I'd buy it in a heartbeat, it's the small things I miss about that game too, like how there were special rare versions of cars that would only spawn in a certain area when the standard version of that car was spawning (Futo GT, Blue Sultan, etc)

As for the airport thing, that's because the piloting community became so big in GTA 4 and the airport was the place for it. I remember in 08 when there was about 20 of us that were dominating lobbies in the helis and it was a super rare thing to see, and then over time it became a massive community... Whereas nowadays Heli pilots are seldom seen, the only time I get to resurrect my heli dogfighting is when some bum jet pilot wants a "1 vs 1" and I instead bring him to a heli 1 vs 1 and show him that the skill it takes to master the heli is far higher than mastering that silly easy ass jet.

If there were 5 things right now I could change about GTA 5 It'd be the following:

- Change the cannon on the jets, explosive rounds are too OP, and far too easy. Change the cannon to the buzzard cannon & 99% of "pro pilots" will be exposed as mediocre while simultaneously balancing the jet (it would still be the top air vehicle because of it's maneuverability, but it won't ruin people on the ground all game)

- Add cops off functionality

- Add blips off functionality

- Add more functionality to the creator mode ( While I think the current creator is great, I don't think they've unlocked it's full potential)

And, I emailed R* over a year ago about adding some kind of "crew house" type thing, where you can essentially buy the place as a leader, and then anyone in your crew can use the amenities within the crew house. So if they didn't have personal vehicles the crew leader could buy vehicles for the crew, modify them for racing and then others could have an option to race the crew vehicles in different classes of racing with a % of the winnings going towards the crew.

Similar to TDU2, but I guess with the motorcycle club that's as close as we'll get to that one.

Abandon the gameplay? I don't find myself doing this very much. Thinking about it, you could probably catch me doing 3 things at any time. Contact missions with randoms, being a vip/ceo depending on the character and running jobs in public freeroam, killing players in public freeroam.

I find standing around doing nothing boring. To each their own but it's not really for me. I'm trying to do other things but always fall back on my normal routine work/kill.

I'm gonna have to join the other old guys and derail the thread further... Fellow, fogeys, cranks and geriatrics, I have before me a magic button. This button allows me to fix IV. I have pushed the button, would you go back?

I know I tried a couple of times, just after V came out when I had some very strong multiplayer withdrawal. It was terrible, the only people left were the god mode warriors and people who've never played. The cheaters were lovin it because only one person per session seemed to know how to vote to kick. #thankgodformaxpayne3.

Then after I had heard they wiped everyone's rank, just long enough to confirm that yes they did in fact remove them, for me it was completely dead right then and there. None of my friends play it anymore, the ranks are gone and I'm older and different now. Can't go back to what doesn't exist anymore.

For me, this new Online is better, particularly since upgrading, there's elements of IV there and lots of improvement too. I got a taste of turf wars last night when a biker gang I joined did some sort of hold the fort type job and then the other team started one after in a new location. But we never had a Rhino in turf wars! It was awesome.

Sure the Annihilator sucks, but it sucked n IV too until circle strafing became a thing, the explosive ammo became a game changer. As in switch lobbies or maybe even games cause there's no hope now. It was awesome to be on either end of that because of the skill involved. If you hopped in it today and instantly started wrecking everyone wouldn't that feel empty? It would for me. I think the chopper is there to remind the past kind of sucks.

Cops n Crooks? Got nothing for ya, I miss it like a dead dog and I miss those as much as a person can. But I have faith we will get something similar again. I loved IV too, it was the first online multiplayer game I ever played, nothing has felt like it since, but she's aged worse than any of my exes.

Back OT: another thing I do when bored in Online is to sign out and make long winded posts on gtaforums. Old man type ramblings that hark back to the days of steam powered pocket watches and brontosaurus meat at eleven cents a pound.

I usually call up my Street Blazer and just try to have some fun with its weird physics. If you let off the throttle and pull back, after a while, you'll pop another wheelie! It's actually great fun. Another thing I do is Cargo-bombing. Grab a Cargobob, grab a car, get some altitude then try to drop the cars on the planes and helicopters at the airfield/airport/helipad. It's surprisingly difficult if you get enough height.

Don't forget to hop into a minisub too! The underwater scenery in this game is great, ranging from massive rock formations, enlarged Rhino tanks, a jumbo jet, a Cargo Plane just off the coast of Ft. Zancudo, a nuclear submarine, various ships and even a T-34 like the one at the scrapyard! The underwater aspect of this game is so underrated.

E: GTA IV multiplayer was amazing! I remember playing with friends one night for hours on end, then one of us said 'Dude, the sun's coming up!' Truly a blissful time, even though I was really tired for the days after. May just be the nostalgia, but as one of my first entries into online gaming, Liberty City was perfect. It seemed so immersive with all the interiors and details, like the whole museum, and of course, the Turismo dealership.
