GTA V is driving me insane

Don't get me wrong, I still think it's a great game. Definitely one of the most innovative in the series, after San Andreas and perhaps III. But the PC version? They done effed up.

So let's set the mood. It's 2014, and my birthday rolls around(Which is in July). A friend hits me up on Facebook messenger, says he pre-ordered the PC version of V for me. Hey, that's awesome, I've been wanting to play that game for a long time! I patiently wait for the release on PC after setback after setback after setback. Finally, it comes out. After a bit of confusion(Turns out it wasn't actually a pre-order), I finally have the game in my hands, and I can start installing it. 7 discs? Jesus f-ing christ.

Alright, let's just install this thing. About an hour later, I come back, put in the last disc, finish the install, and go to open the game.

5GB day one patch.

F--k.

Well, I can't say I didn't see this coming. So, download the patch, and there's another one. This one's only a few hundred mb big, luckily, so I download that over the course of an evening(keep in mind it's the next day now, I have 100k download speeds here, and the only other option is Comcast, and they're sneaky with their contracts.). Then, the moment finally arrives. All the updates are downloaded, and I hit play.

The launcher crashes.

F--k.

Alright, time to google it. A few days later, I still have no solution. After a lot of trial and error, I find out there was a small, 50mb file that was corrupted. Cool. Delete that, launcher redownloads it, and the game opens. I get the R* logo, then it crashes.

Eventually I finally get into the game, and it's awesome. I enjoy it for a good 2 months or so, then the updates hit. I try to put them off as long as I can with offline mode, but eventually I'm unable to get into the game without updating anymore. Really, Rockstar? I have the badly-designed, open-bottom box right here, do you want a f--king picture?

Fast forward to March-ish this year. After a ton of trial and error, I trick the game into going into offline mode. From there, I can either set my PC's clock backwards, or, as I later found out, open the launcher, let it start updating, then close it and start in offline mode.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago. My PC has a meltdown, and I have to reinstall Windows 10 to a fresh HDD, along with Ubuntu Studio as a backup OS. Fast forward again to a couple days ago, and I try to open V. It starts downloading a launcher update, then crashes. This happens one or two more times, then I just get a code 16 error complaining about an incomplete Social Club Update.

F--k.

Alright, reinstall Social Club.

F--k.

Reinstall it 20 more times and try a bunch of other googled solutions

F--k.

Reinstall the whole goddamn game from the 7 discs.

F--k.

I'm officially fed up with R* DRMs. They don't know what they're doing now, they didn't know what they were doing when they launched the game on PC, and they most certainly won't learn from this. People buy the games anyway, why listen to the minority that can't? It's especially frustrating since I didn't even buy this game, my friend gave it to me. So I'm not wasting my own money on a game that I can't play anymore, I'm wasting my friend's, which sucks, because it's a goddamn expensive game.

I plan on getting a PS3 Super Slim soon, and enjoying some of the titles I always wanted to play as a kid but never could without the console. Plus, I have a $50 Playstation gift card hanging around, so that's a plus. Things made much more sense in 2009. I remember going down to Target and paying my own $20 for my very first video game, Midnight Club LA Remix for the PSP. I played the f--k out of that. Now, we have DRMs, ridiculous prices, and way too many updates to keep track of. Steam knows how to handle it, but even they have some things that could be improved.

Anyway, that turned out to be way longer than I thought it would be. Here's a cookie for reading it. :cookie:

Hey, hold up. Seven discs? I'm yet to see any "NewGen" (N/CG Console+Modern PC) game that eats up SEVEN discs. Are you sure you're owning a legitimate copy? Because all I know is that pirated/cracked copies are the only things that sell a single game with multiple discs instead of one thing. I've seen this myself: got tricked into buying Assassin's Creed: III with a physical "copy" only to find out that its a cracked sh*t where you need to, well, crack it in order to install the game. Threw all the discs in one go. Seen this numerous times.

I've even seen GTAV being treated like this. When I ask about it (don't be bothered, even if I wanted it my poor laptop can't even meet a PS4's requirement  ) they said it contains 4 discs, not 7.

I know this may sound dick-ish, but did you tried buying the game digitally from Steam? Not only is getting a cracked game whose files are strapped on more than one disc is dangerous for your rig, but it can also be problematic. I've been there before, installing AC:III the way I've said before f-d up my laptop when I deleted the game upon arrival. Damn thing didn't show up in the Installed Programs tab so I had to delete the whole f*cking game and I forgot to delete the save, ended up with a messy C:/ that didn't get solved until I had to format the thing (although that's a different story).

It's 7 discs for everyone, it was a Gamestop copy. And in regards to Steam, I don't think it makes sense to buy a game that I already legitimately own. Plus, downloading 60GB+ is absolutely not an option. :p I know we aren't supposed to discuss piracy here, but I've been trying to find cracks that work. I shouldn't have to work this hard to play a game that I own.

That's unfortunate about Assassins Creed III though. Especially considering that Ubisoft is giving it away for free from the 7th.

I have a feeling that it's your insanely slow internet speed that's preventing you from playing and keeps crashing the launcher. If you had gotten it on steam instead I'm fairly certain you could just start up steam in offline mode and it would allow you to play GTA V just fine.

That's exactly what it is. :(

Yes, GTA V for PC is 7 DVD discs-I have seen them at Wal-Mart.

On-topic, Since your internet is so slow, that is the issue that is causing your crashes more than likely. So you have 2 options to play (1) Upgrade to a higher internet package-Yes Cable (comcast is a cable company) has several different packages-that has higher speeds OR (2) Download the game off Steam, which is the SAME size as the discs-only takes about an hour to an hour and a half to download and install-I have confirmed that using Cox internet. Then you have the option to play the game in offline mode via steam (as said above). Steam is the most convenient way to install and play games as there are no discs to worry about-the ONLY time it doesn't make sense is if you have a small HD, which shouldn't be an issue now a days since most PC's come with 500GB to 1TB HD's by default.

...it's the internet. I already said that. There's another company out her offering 5mbps download speeds, so I might be able to get that at some point. And I can't download the game off Steam if I don't own the Steam version.

Return the physical version at Walmart for a refund and buy the Steam Version.

I don't see how that will fix anything as he will still need to download 65 GB, plus updates. Having the discs makes it easier, and there are seven because I'm fairly sure the PC copy includes all updates up to the Heists DLC on the discs. The fact that there is a 5 GB day-one patch, followed by many other gigabytes of updates is just an example of where the gaming industry is going. Internet service providers really need to step up their game to handle the demand because they will only get bigger.

I thought it was, my bad. I was thinking about how little physical copies of it I see at walmart when I was posting evidently.

@above - Discs don't really make anything easier. If anything, digital downloads are a lot handier across different computers. Discs are just nice collectibles at this point.

He mentioned in his post about ISPs needing to step up their game. That's my point. There is absolutely no way I can download 65 gb, if I'm lucky I can get almost 2gb of steam gameage downloaded overnight. I'm not about to make the total price of this game $120 and then wait a month to play it, unless anyone else feels like spending the money. *sarcasm*

I'm not about to make the total price of this game $120

If you do as suggested above and UPGRADE your internet package to a higher tier-Comcast is a cable company and cable companies offer a variety of packages with varying speeds-I confirmed this as I too have cable internet at 150MBPS- and AFTER upgrading your internet package to one with a better speed, RETURN the game to where you got it from and get your money back and then BUY the game on Steam and it will only take like an hour and a half to 2 hours tops to download the game WITH ALL available updates.

This WILL save you money in the long run since the game is A LOT cheaper now than it was at release day, so you'll have money left over as well as save time. It's just common sense really.

In short, if your gonna ask for help, then DO as recommended instead of trying to argue with everyone, please. Just a friendly heads up.

Then by all means, explain how I should go about returning a game that was purchased a year and half ago. I'd be perfectly fine just to play it offline, as I was doing before Social Club started moaning.

That's simple too (and common sense)-Put the game discs back in the original box they came in and grab your receipt and take them back to where the games were purchased. Since it's been so long they will issue the refund on a gift card instead of cash, but it's still essentially cash as it will allow to get stuff for free later. Simple easy. All you gotta do is tell them the game is defective/won't work on your computer and they will issue the refund on a store gift card-which gift cards are essentially the same as cash. This will put you ahead already as it will be free money to you since you are not the one to buy the game as you said a friend bought it for you.

Discs do make owning games like this easier because you save having to download 95% of the data. Sure, installing takes a while because of optical drive limitations and the fact that DVDs are used to ensure that Rockstar supports as many users as possible, but I would much rather have discs than virtual copies. I can at least say I own a physical product then. Something I would want if I'm paying in excess of £40 for it.

And I know that digital download copies are getting more prevalent, and that's perfectly fine if you have a 100/100 or Gigabit connection, with good reliability, but for most of us, ISPs really need to get a grip on demand. Unfortunately for the UK, Margaret Thatcher's ludicrous idea to build upon a nationwide telephone line coaxial system is a huge problem as only newer or more higher class areas have cable or FTTP. The fastest speeds for someone like me who lives within walking distance of a FTTC cabinet, are still only 76 Mb/s at best, with drops to 50 Mb/s common during the day. Assuming a best case scenario, you're looking at just under 2 hours. Factor in peak times and bandwidth management, and it's almost certainly twice or thrice that.

This is why I will continue to buy physical copies of games. The automotive industry doesn't seem to understand the concept of IT in a vehicle, while ISPs don't seem to understand modern consumer requirements. Comcast in the US is a prime example of that.

A receipt is that little piece of paper stores give you when you buy things as proof of purchase-whether it is buying food, groceries, gas, paying bills, etc.-something you should ALWAYS save when buying stuff like electronics and games. I know you didn't buy it- a "friend" did, so ask them for the receipt, if they're smart they'll still have it.

OR you could contact Rockstar Games (aka the ones who made the game)-they do offer a support service online AND on the phone.

If your not interested in attempting the workarounds/fixes provided, have you tried contacting Rockstar Games' support either by phone OR online? The phone one will probably get the quickest response.

Also, try doing a factory reset of your computer, making sure to back up everything first, as a fresh install of Windows may fix any issues that were previously undetected-ie. it might be as simple as a driver conflict/issue? This is usually the FIRST suggestion most support techs tell you to try.

Lot of people complain about steam. i have GTA5 on steam, first gta ive bought on steam without having a hard copy as well.

The good thing about steam is you can make a complete copy of all your game files to another hd as a backup and if your pc screws up and you have to reinstall windows, you still have your games safe. I will at some point buy a hard copy, i feel your pain, install 7 disks and updates to see it crash.

Cant really add anything more than the other guys, get a better internet connection and download off steam, or if the games genuine contact Rockstar and talk to them. My internet connection is slow took me a couple of days to download it, but it plays fine offline and online.
