Ghost wearing top-hat (clown?) East of Sandy Shores [PC]

Recommended Posts

Has anybody else seen the ghost man wearing a top-hat, East of Sandy Shores near mountains? It looked like he might be wearing a clown face as well but, not sure.

I spotted him at that factory just off of the HWY East of Sandy Shores. I followed him around as he eventually went up to the mountains, going East and then I lost him. After losing him I kept going in the direction he seemed to be trying to go and that led me directly to the unmarked grave on top of the mountain, overlooking the lighthouse. I did find from research that this grave could have to do with a lady from the lighthouse. And there was some mention of a character from Red Dead, which I have never played and know nothing about.

I have googled this like crazy and searched for information on this and can find nothing. Again, the only references to a man in top hat in regards to RockStar games was a man from Red Dead.

I asked around about this on a coupld of Twitch channels playing GTA ONline and people acted like I was trying to troll them and said the ghost does not exist.

Can I please, get some feed back on this? I have spent more than seven hours just looking around the same area for this ghost and I have only seen it that once. I am still new to the game and just assumed upon seeing it that it was a standard thing everybody knew about so, I didn't bother taking video or photo.

Hello, welcome to the forum.

Has anybody else seen the ghost man wearing a top-hat, East of Sandy Shores near mountains?

Could you be referring to The Drifter?

Hello, welcome to the forum.

Could you be referring to The Drifter?

Negative. It wasn't the Drifter as seen from that video. The man I saw was very clearly wearing a top hat, tall like Abe Lincoln's, and a suit. I was following him on foot and saw him clearly. To see if I could get a response from him I pushed him a couple of times and he just fell down, got back up and continued going in the same direction. He never said a thing. Also, it was clearly a ghost as I could see right through him.

Thanks, for the welcome!

Sorry, I just noticed that there is a separate area for GTA Online and GTA V. I was playing Online when this occurred and not the story mode.

No worries, I will move your thread to the main GTA Online forum where more people will see it and hopefully some folks can discuss this with you.

Nice username.

Haven't heard of this one. Sometimes when a player leaves the session, their character turns into an npc and walks/talks/reacts like a normal pedestrian, including walking long distances. It is possible a player left the session wearing the clothes you describe and their character went on his merry way walking around the map. You finally lost him because he finally despawned.

That would make sense. Would they be transparent like I said if that is the case?

He wouldn't be transparent.

You sure he wasn't another player in passive?

And yes, the modders are pretty much making the game unplayable for me. Seeing people in game chat offering and/or asking for money and then hearing of people having accounts banned when all they did was walk over a modders money. This has made me play solo, not ever getting in a group, in fear of accidentally stepping in to something a modder is doing and getting banned for being in the vicinity of it.

I haven't even done the story mission that requires me to team up with other player.

Is there less or no modding like that on say, Xbox One?

Online I find myself just mostly roaming around and exploring the map, which is what I was doing when I ran in to whatever this top hat man is.

Hmm; there were some "ghost" NPCs that occurred in either 1.34 or 1.35 shortly after release, but AFAIK quickly vanished got fixed--the NPC below shown after I shot her to see what would happen:

Other than that, the only clowns I've seen in the game are spawns from script kiddies screwing around (as usual, "popping up" in multiple public sessions):

To answer your other question, yes, there's generally less "modding" on consoles than the PC, though glitches and cheaters (taking advantage of glitches to do things like teleport) still exist.

Yes there is signifigantly less modders/cheaters on XB One and Ps4. Occasionally you will see a lvl 8000, but that is pretty much it.

I did think of that at first. But, he was just walking. Never ran once. A couple of times, I think because I pushed him down, he seemed to had lost his waypoint and had to double back to go the way he wanted to go. Just didn't act like a controlled player at all. I guess a passive player could still be what he was. I don't know.

Ah, that reminds me that I did run in to a clown in a van earlier in that same play session. Some kind of ice cream van or something like that. I wanted to see if it was something I could buy a tracker for so I pulled, what I assumed was an npc, out of the van and he just stood there and roamed around a bit like npc's do. Maybe five minutes later I drove by same area and there were two dead clowns in the middle of the road.

So, from what you said, there being no clowns in game now, I am thinking the clown in the van was a modder. It was maybe two hrs later when I ran in to my "ghost" top hat man. The clown in the van was not wearing top hat but, maybe what I was seeing could have been something created by a modder?

Thinking seriously about spending money I don't have on an Xbox One version now.

I think it actually works the way that when someone in passive leaves the session, that npc his character turns into stays transparent.

Clowns driving around the map sounds awesome. I'd pay good money for R* to legit put them in as a rare random encounter.

That modder sounded harmless imo. At least he wasn't blowing you up constantly. A random clown here and there on the map doesn't hurt anyone, of course if it's none of the "bodyguard" ones (yes, that is a thing). Did any of them attack you at all?

No, I wasn't attacked. Even when I pulled the clown out of the van he didn't attack. I agree, random things like that would be great and that's actually what I thought the van clown was. I just wanted that van! haha

Like I said, I'm still pretty new and a lowbie in game. My name here is same as my R* Social Club name. So, I guess I will write this up as being either a modder or a wandering logged out passive player.

I was hoping there would be more to it but, at least now I won't spend my time Online trying to figure it out. Seriously, Over the last three days I have spent maybe 15 hours scouring the game and the internet trying to figure out what this thing was.

If this was in GTA Online and not single-player then its most likely what other people have mentioned and that it being an online character that has left the session and turned into an NPC. Or possibly a modder as i bumped into one of those on the HWY near grapeseed; he was a guy with a car where the colours kept changing, he had no gamertag and wasnt on the minimap. He was also invisible but his car wasnt.

This is it. When me and a mate would getting kicked from sessions, both of our characters would turn into npc's and start going about their own day.

cool topic ill try to recreate it with one of my friends And if we can ill do it to other friends just to make them think there is an awsome rare character. What if you could do this to a good amount of people and people actually start believing in the top hat clown ghost.

a player dressed in the top hat etc who had disconnected from the session while in passive mode and left his zombie avatar, they just walk about for a while once the players has left the session?..

As others above me have mentioned, I'm almost certain it was a passive mode player who disconnected. They turn into NPCs and wander off until they're out of sight upon which they despawn.

And again, you managed to take no pictures whatsoever of this entire occurrence? Cmon man, it's 2016...:(

Pics or it didn't happen. Not only is there the ingame snapmatic but you could literally have taken a pic with your mobile phone.

Mobile phone? The topic title states "PC", there's plenty of free image-snapping/ screenshot apps or programs you can use, if not the built-in ones (snipping tool and standard print screen).

Maybe it was a player that left the session wearing a glitched outfit. Upon leaving the session, maybe the player's character turned into an NPC as mach stated? If wearing a glitched see through outfit, it could appear to be a ghost. Although it sounds more like the player was in passive. Maybe the character stayed in passive when the user left. I'm not sure if it's related or not, but I made a post a long time ago regarding the "strange" messages on the rocks in the desert when I first came across them.

I ended up following the trail and it's a sub-sub short storyline about a serial killer in GTAV.

When I learned about it, it was truly fascinating and I'm glad it was there... distracted me from gameplay and lured me into a new GTAV mythology, expanding the game just one step more.

Here's the original post I made: Writing on Rocks? Any idea what it's about?

Good luck & cheers! :)
