Regarding your immersion concerns, I’m pretty sure I heard in an interview that Metro: Exodus will allow you to use the native Russian language, instead of English, with added subtitles for more immersion, so I won’t be surprised if they added a difficulty level, or an option in the settings menu, where you can remove said HUD’s.

Well I really hope so. If the Russian language is limited to the NPCs then I quite like the idea of that, but subtitles are another no-no for me, so I'd need my colleagues to speak English.

Ah, I think they meant the main characters too, but I could be wrong. I could be completely wrong and there might not be any such thing lol. I’ll be using it personally, as I have Russian roots in my family, so I quite like the idea, but I’m not exactly fluent in the language.

I am with you on the HUD’s though, I’ve always played Metro with minimal hud, too.

What you say in your previous posts about difficulty levels is another annoyance for me. Why do developers always link immersion and difficulty together? Why can't I play on easy, but without all the HUD and interactive prompts? Why does 'no HUD' always have to equal 'one shot deaths' and 'limited ammo' ?

I know what you mean, but recently that’s just the route a lot of games take nowadays, more hud = easier gameplay, I don’t know. They seem to think removing ammo count, health bars and any mini-maps as making the game a lot harder, which in a way, it does, but I still think it would be better if it was just added in the settings menu of the game.

Very true, but it's illogical, isn't it?

Yes, HUD and interactive prompts make things easier, but I don't understand why, if I want to turn all that off, I'm also forced to accept one shot deaths and limited ammo.

I'm currently playing Metro Last Light, but because I don't want any HUD or interactive prompts, some levels take me hours to complete because I die so easily and constantly run out of ammo and/or gas mask filters.

Yeah, Ranger mode can be a real pain in the arse on some of the levels on Metro: Last Light, I can’t remember which mission it was (I last played on the Xbox 360) but I have a pretty vivid memory of a mission that took me ages to complete.

Unfortunately, it also seems like the immersion/difficulty trend that you hate so much, doesn’t seem to be coming to an end anytime soon. To be honest, I can’t remember a game that just had the options to remove the HUD in the settings menu, but my memory is sh*t after all.

Killzone 2, 3 and 4. GTA V, Fallout 4 and Far Cry 5 are all games that allow the removal of HUD and interactive prompts, while still allowing you to choose the difficulty level.

But other than them I can't think of any others, so you're right in what you say. It is a trend.

So a few recent games do allow you to remove the HUDs in the settings, shows you how much attention I pay these days, huh, the more you know.

Exodus feels like a game that realistically, should allow you to remove the HUD, as it’s a survival horror type game(?)

Mmm, another one of those trailers which suggest we're watching gameplay, when in fact it's in-game graphics with a pre-rendered first-person animation / perspective.

I’ve got to say that the environments look great, I was curious to see how the development team would go from their usual ‘claustrophobic’ environments to these bigger, open ended levels, I hope the level of detail in the game stays as on point as they did in previous Metro titles.

A Metro game with a genuine open-world environment could have been amazing, but this compromise will have to do for now.

With the direction they’re heading in right now, and if Exodus sells well, who knows? Maybe we will see an open-world Metro title one day.

For some reason I totally forgot this was coming out in February, now I'm incredibly hyped. The Metro series is so underrated in my head, despite loving the games.

they got a lot of stick for switching to Epic Games, but ulimately its not like its going to be unavailable for anyone - yeah its a bit inconvenient, but so is Bethesda, Origin etc

I don't really wanna buy the game from the Epic Games. I don't like how they try to make us use their launcher just by acquiring a bunch of exclusives. Make a good service first then I'll consider supporting you over Steam.

Totally enjoying it.

Metro games always give me that early on PC FPS games feeling.  This one does the same.

It feels like the closest thing to a Half Life game. :) You know...what would be a cut screen in most games are just in game conversations.  Hang out and listen or just walk away.  It's that kind of seamless weaving that really make these games.

Well I just watched some 'from the start' gameplay and see that Hardcore Ranger is there from the off. I just hope it's as strict as the other game with this option enabled, so that no HUD or UI of any kind shows itself. I don't want any interactive prompts (I know how to open a friggin door or turn a gas valve!).

You dont have to start the game from epic launcher, you can just add it to your steam library as a non steam game.

I suspect it will end.  The whole game is very much story driven and there really wouldn't be any activities to do after the story ends outside of just going out and shooting beasts.  Plus the game is a series of maps with very specific story triggers that take you from one map to the next...its not like an open world game nore does it offer a hub and spoke to jump between maps.

Couple of questions for anyone who's been playing this on PS4:

1. Does the hardcore mode disable the entire HUD and UI? When I say entire I mean just that. Does it stop all the little pop-up notifications when you come to something with which you can interact, like "O to open door" and stuff like that?

2. Can you holster your weapon or is there a weapon constantly in view?

3. Can you 'lower' your weapon at will, so that you're carrying it in a more relaxed, non-hostile way?

I’ve got it on Xbox but I’m sure it’ll be the same. I can’t answer your first question because I’m only playing on hardcore, Ranger hardcore removes all hud (so it says when you pick the difficulty).

To answer your second and third question though, there is an option that sort of holsters your weapon, it basically just lowers your weapon if you hit right on the d-pad (for Xbox anyway), but the weapon still remains in your peripherals.

Brilliant! Thanks for the answers.

I'm so happy they've included an option to lower your weapon at will. It will add so much to the immersion for me as I've always disliked how in FPS you have the gun pointing out in front the whole time. As far as I'm aware this is the first console FPS that has included this option. It's an option in Fallout 4, but only because it was added by modders.

Does anyone know if Hardcore Ranger actually makes the game more difficult in terms of health/enemy health, and how many hits you can take etc? Or does it simply remove all the HUD and UI without affecting the actual difficulty?

Never mind that last question. I've just remembered that in previous instalments Ranger Mode means sparse ammo, etc.
