Majestic81
Post up your favorite and least favorite storylines in gaming, I have a few: 1. Mass Effect trilogy. Its the f*cking best sh*t I ever experienced. I wont even go into details about it, i'll just post up a soundtrack from ME3 and if you've played the game and truly enjoyed it, you'll know what the f*ck im talking about. 2. GTA IV. I dunno what is it about the storyline, but I dig it so much, I like how its tragic yet not depressing, doesnt leave you feeling sad but kinda gives you a lesson. I like the characters, the moral of the story, from start to ending, the plot was amazing. It was a good blend of dark and humorous. 3. Mafia 2. Its similar to GTA IV for me, except it was more serious with much less humor, but that was what was great about it. Is that its serious. I liked Vito's path to becoming powerful and rich and him finding out that the life he always imagined as a made guy was not as glamorous as it seemed. 4. Dishonored. Simple story, yet the execution was very effective. The revenge path was really entertaining if you decided to go down that road, the "pacifist" path was also well done. The game supported multiple endings depending on your choices which is always good for making storylines more interesting and engaging. 4. Witcher 1 and 2. I dunno what to say about those. Other than the writing is some top notch blockbuster sh*t. Especially in Witcher 2. I mean you have to replay it a few times before you understand everything, because it was such a well written story with so much details and different players and factions, and each time you get a different viewpoint on the whole plot. W1's story was not as rich, but it was still very engaging to the player. Least Favorite: 1 . Fallout 3. I enjoyed the game and the story wasn't "bad" at all but it wasn't my cup of tea, the whole being 16 thing and going out of a vault that you lived your whole life in, just to look for your dad wasn't very exciting for me, the goal to bring back project purity and the conflict between BoS and the Enclave was boring as f*ck too. I didnt give a sh*t about either of those groups. 2. Skyrim. Now im not sure this should be here, since its one of my favorite games and the main quest is not bad either, and other questlines are among my favorite in the TES games (like the DB or the Thieves Guild questlines) but the main quest as a whole, except for becoming Dragonborn, using shouts and having that power, etc.. wasn't very much exciting or unique. It was the standard plot you'd get in a standard fantasy book or game or movie. Which is: "You are the hero who goes to defeat the great evil that threatens this land." Which is too simple and generic. Plus I find dragons boring. Misumi
I agree with Mass Effect, and Dishonored. Haven't completed GTAIV or Mafia 2 so I can't say anything for those. I just finished Witcher 1, and started Witcher 2, on my way to finally try Witcher 3. So far, I'm unimpressed. The story isn't bad, but the gameplay and bugs just ruin it. I've crashed countless times, and everything feels too complicated and/or sluggish. I actually sort of got used to the combat in Witcher 1 for example. Then once I hit Witcher 2, it's like playing an entirely new series. Almost everything changed, and not in a good way. Getting back to good stories. There's so many I've played over the years it's hard to remember them all. But quickly off the top of my head. The Bioshock series (and System Shock 2) and The Last of Us were great. A similar game called Enslaved had a fairly good story as well. IPMBMBAP
Algonquin Assassin
Favourite: GTA IV. No matter how many times I play through the story I just love experiencing Niko's tale of trying to understand American society snd putting his past behind him. Least favourite: GTA V. It's hard to think this sh*t pit of a story was written by the same team that wrote GTA IV. Osho
Favorites: Too many to list here. I'll skip this, and stick to the next category to keep it short. Least favourites: 1. Witcher 3 - I don't know but I just can't get into this game. The story was okay. Its the gameplay that wasn't really that fun, esp. the combat was really underwhelming and pretty much ruins the game for me. Sorry but Witcher 1 still remains the best for me. 2. GTA IV and RDR - I have bashed these games so much that I wont waste any more words over it. These are the worst open world games for me, period! 3. Skyrim/Fallout 4 - Terrible games. Bethesda with their sh*tty, casual, dumb down releases have ruined the gaming industry in general. I don't know how people are able to waste their time in playing these garbage games. Gothic 2, and several old school RPG's are far superior than anything Bethesda have to offer. 4. Thief 4 - Another great franchise ruined by mainstream influence. As a huge Thief fan, this was really a mediocre experience with a bad story and many aspects that made the originals such a classic were either replaced or entirely dropped. 5 Hitman Absolution - Pretty much the same reasons as above. That is all I can come up.

And 40% of that walking involves running into invisible walls. Which are apparently the most common enemy in the Witcher. IPMBMBAP

Misumi
I don't mind the game being less open than something like Elder Scrolls. Dragon Age and ME were like that, and were fine. The invisible walls I'm talking about are the gaps in between trees and rocks that I can't walk through, even though I can clearly see nothing blocking. Or little rocks on the ground that somehow I cannot step over. These were everywhere in Flotsam. The fastest way to get around I've found is to keep your weapon out and just dodge-roll everywhere. So the entire time I'm out of a city, I'm just doing cartwheels to get around. IPMBMBAP
PoeticWhisper
Favs, none of these are in any particular order. 1. The Witcher 3: I had never played Witcher 2 or 1. Still haven't played 1 cause I don't game on the PC and there is no console port (that I'm aware of.) But Geralts story through the Witcher 3 was absolutely incredible. Ciri, Yen, Triss, Vesemir, The Wild Hunt, and the band of fantastic other characters in-between. The Witcher 3 creates not only an incredibly cinematic, deep, rich, character driven narrative. But also has some awesome gameplay and open world to back it up. Certainly the best game I've ever played. Not to mention Hearts of Stone and Blood & Wine, with the incredible continued cast of great characters and riveting narrative, this game is a generation defining experience IMO. 2. Life is Strange: Not every game needs to have incredible gameplay to tell a fantastic story. I guess it's more of an age demographic thing, but I was hooked the moment I tried the trial for this game. Instantly connected with the characters and story. It was seriously depressing throughout, unfolding the secrets of Blackwell. The drugs, the suicide, the murder, the heartbreak, the disturbing, twisted, dark final stretch. But yet, it made you feel nostalgic, and everything felt warm, and happy. With such a bleak and depressing story it's amazing that all the characters still remained happy, and relate-able. There were many moments in this game where I needed to pause and just take it in, cause some points get really f*cked up, and I genuinely cared for these characters well being. Add that to the choices you're forced to make, and this game just throws you through every loop known to man. Can't be missed. 3. Red Dead Redemption: John Marston's story may seem cliche to some, but I don't think that's ever a bad thing as long as it's presented in the right way. And boy was it presented the right way in RDR. From beginning to end, the game offers incredible amounts of story telling and progression. John Marston just felt like a bad-ass motherf*cker but he never felt over the top. Like sure, you spend the game mowing down hundreds of other people and remain alive, but it's his dire need to be reunited with his family, and his want to be a father and a family man that makes him feel human. He's a man who's done some bad things, but still loves and cares. A changed man, never given the chance to really change, mixed with one of the most shocking endings in video games IMO. Still holds up very well nearly 7 years later.4. The Last of Us: I kinda spoiled myself, from watching a playthrough of the game before actually playing it, but I never expected to get a chance to play it. However, I finally did this year and my god it's something to behold. The presentation, characters, gut wrenching emotion, the deep undertones of survival and human needs. Joel and Ellie's time together was long, and to see both of them co-exist from humble beginnings to gripping ends, is one of the most pure, down to earth experiences in gaming. The Last of Us has had it's praises sung many, many times, but it really does deserve all the praise it gets. There are very few storys in gaming that will match up to this. 5. The Walking Dead Season 1: It was the first Telltale game I ever played. They were on sale, and episode 1 was free. I seen it won the 2012 game of the year, and I've never been much of a TV buff so I've never seen the show. Ignorant me, never did any research on the game to find out that it was in-fact it's own story. Thankfully, the sale came and I played episode 1, just intending on trying it out and not buying all the rest. Well, I did. I was instantly hooked on Lee and Clementine's story. From the cannibal farms, to the deranged, strange people you meet along the way. The path to protecting little Clem was one of the most intense and gut punching narratives I've played. Spoilers aside there is some really disgusting and horrifying things that these people need to go through, and I could never imagine being in their shoes. The game never goes over the top, and does a fantastic job of humanizing the experience. Sometimes zombie games miss out on the most important thing in life, human interaction. And it's displayed on full in TWD S1. Dislike: Well I try not to buy games I don't like, lol, but I'll try. 1. Call of Duty Black Ops 2: Alright, I know, a Call of Duty story sucking, no way!!! Yeah, but I enjoyed the Black Ops 1 campaign. Found it quite interesting and I loved the setting and enjoyed the characters. Black Ops 2 though seemed to take the great foundation laid out by the previous installment and sh*t all over it. It was not entertaining at all to me. Had no stand out characters besides Woods, and even he was boring in that game. Tis a real shame. 2. Assassin's Creed 4: Boring, repetitive, boring, repetitive, boring, repetitive. Sorry... This game came free with my Xbone, and I tried my best to play it. I really did. I enjoyed Assassin's Creed 1-2, even nabbed all the achievements in Assassin's Creed 2. But I fell off the series, and god jesus 4 just felt the same as 1-2 but had boring all boat missions, and having to do all this extra bullsh*t to progress the story. I don't even remember the characters at this point in time and I only played it less than a year ago. I don't even remember the main characters name. This one gets a spot on the list because despite the boring gameplay, the story never made me want to continue. It didn't do anything for me at all. 3. Far Cry 4: I may be an anomaly, but I really, really enjoyed Far Cry 3. Thought the characters and story were really quite good. So i was excited for Far Cry 4. Thought pagan min looked very cool, and thought I might dislike him as much as I disliked Vaas and Hoyt. But nope. He is hardly in the game, I don't even remember his lackeys names, and the ending is just f*cking random as all hell. You spend the whole game being forced to work for the golden path to get to pagan min's fortress. Dealing with Amata and the other dude's BS, and having to choose between the two the whole damn game instead of actual story telling. Then you finally get to the end and it's literally the most anti-climactic thing EVER. Seriously, I was so disappointed in this game's story. Majestic81
@PoeticWhisper. Witcher 1 is not that demanding, if you have a laptop you can probably play it on that. Really not demanding at all like the other two games. Still wouldn't hurt to look at the system requirements though, it also helps that its pretty cheap off Steam. ------ I forgot to add the walking dead season 1 by telltale. and the wolf among us, game of thrones, tales of the borderlands. All games by Telltale. f*cking amazing story telling. Had my gripes with GoT though. Like characters dying way too much, and having to choose between Asher and Rodrik in one of the last episodes. Which felt unnecessary. But other than that, those games were amazing story-wise. Especially The Wolf Among Us. It had a unique mysterious atmosphere, and the plot twists were very creative. 25 to Life... If that game had a story, I dont remember it. RogerWho
I hope I won't forget something important. These are games I value for their storylines. If we were to talk about other story-related aspect (writing, characters etc.) there would be more of them. 1) Life is strange. It's better than sliced bread with chocolate butter and sprinkled with coke. I think I'll leave it at that so that I don't go into full fanboy mode and accidentally write a 7-page essay or something. It's not like there will ever be anything better so I have the whole lifetime to write that. Yea. Some others in no particular order: - Heavy Rain. I very much appreciate games that swerve far from the "the hero will rise, grind side quests, collect armadillo pelts and save us all" formula which I'm so sick of. I also love how they combine the story together from multiple angles/protagonists. It's something I'd like to see much more of. I also don't see many detective games that had an actual effective payoff; HR was one of the better ones. Even though the story itself is certainly not perfect (e.g. it could go without the distracting sci-fi stuff), it's still something that stands a mountain above the usual video game shlock. - Parts of GTA IV+EFLC. While I don't really care all that much for Niko's personal story, I do love some of the partial storylines that intersect all 3 games. The diamonds in particular. Again, a great and rare example of combining views of multiple protagonists (each one being different, and partially antagonistic to each other) and of telling a small story which can still be spread out and engaging. It reminds me of movies like The Town or The Italian job; I'd like to have more games like that. And I also like Luis', Tony's and Johnny's personal stories; they stand their own very well and rank pretty high as far as video games go. - Brothers: The tale of two sons. This is a funny one. While what actually makes the game is its mechanics and how they're tied to the characters, even the story itself on its own is good enough to work stand alone. Turn it into a short animated film and it'll be great. - Mass Effect 3. ME1 is mostly worldbuilding and while it has some of the greatest moments in video games ever (Virmire and Ilos), the storyline doesn't stand out as much. And ME2 of course can go die in a fire. With ME3 though, so much came together right. It's a story about war and desperation, survival rather than saving the world. A lot of the partial storylines (the Geth/Quarian thingy, the genophage etc.) create amazing moments. And since I had the fortune of playing the game long after it came out, compete with the Leviathan and Extended cut DLCs, they brought both some cool foreshadowing as well as a very satisfying and fitting end (and the end also made sense due to what I experienced in my playthrough). There are some bad parts (pretty much everything related to Cerberus) but all that's overshadowed by the good stuff. I have played games where every part comes together even better or that are more effective in their storytelling than ME3, but not in a 60-hour AAA RPG/shooter. And again I also appreciate the subversion of the "hero saves the world" trope. The whole ME trilogy would become pointless if the Reapers could be traditionally defeated. Honorable mentions: - LA Noire, specifically the subplot about drugs and conspiracy, and Phelps' personal stake in it. - Deus Ex. I don't remember any of it now and it was probably convoluted and maybe silly in the typical cyberpunk manner, but when I played it, it was intriguing enough to always make me curious what's next. - Alpha Protocol. There's no other game so broken that I like so much. And while its biggest strength are the dialogs, it was one of the few games in ages that made me stay up until morning only because I wanted to see what happens next. - Mafia. Now the plot by itself wasn't actually all that amazing (while still a lot better than most games), but watching one common man's personal story from beginning to end is still something fairly unique to this day. - KOTOR. I like Star Wars the most when it's trying to do something different from the original movies. KOTOR is burried under the old-school BioWare RPG mess but it says something when I finish an 80-hour game in one week. - The Wolf Among Us. Did I mention I like games that are subversive to the typical tropes? - Fallout. Maybe not the actual storyline per se but so far it's the only adventurer-style "make your own story" RPG that I found interesting enough. Even though I'm not that big a fan of the game itself. - Beyond: Two souls. Yea it did contain some stuff I don't like (save the world; strange coincidences) and might feel like it's cobbled together from unrelated bits and exaggerated drama, but as far as stories in games go, this is among the most unique ones, ever. In how many games do you get to play a homeless teenage girl that helps another woman give birth? Worst: - Max Payne 3 - gets the lifetime "WTF is this utter trash and how could it be shat out without the writers' eyeballs bursting from shame and disgust?" achievement. Once we manage to use idiocy as fuel, this piece of trash will propel our star ships. It's the worst disgrace to humanity apart from mass murderers. Sh*t, why do I still remember this torture device disguised as a game. Can someone dig the memory out? Please, help. Dishonorable mention: - GTA V. Yea the writing is just garbage although the story itself is probably the least bad aspect compared to the characters or humor. Let's not talk about this game ever again, okay? Most of the rest... Forgettable honestly. I won't bother listing stuff like COD and such. Although there certainly exist mainstream games that did some interesting stuff with their storytelling (such as AssCreed 1, and even COD Blops). The Dedito Gae
Ok i'll chip in. Being honest i think RDR's story is a bit cliche, short and threads water at certain moments but the characterization and cast is top notch, i dare to say is the videogame with the best cast of characters ever. http://reddead.wikia.com/wiki/Characters_in_Redemption I cannot find someone i dont love/like a lot, one better than the another. Gta IV is also is pretty good, could even work as a series. And even though i defend the game a lot, the worst story that springs to my mind now belongs to V, unlikable and boring protagonists, Michael De Santa, annoying cliches, forgettable cast, Michael De Santa, dumb story that doesn't even try or worst, sometimes it attempts to pull emotional moments without any merit... Is terrible, not even TBOGT or the 3D era was this bad. Niobium, Payne Killer and Majestic81

Niobium
best: IV - needless to say, this game has one of my favorite stories. TLAD - JOHNNY KLEBITZ Max Payne Series - it has the best dialogue of any game series i've ever played (especially from max). Assassin's Creed 2 - the renaissance was a great setting, and ezio was such a charismatic character. awesome soundtrack from jesper kyd too. i would say that this game and AC1 are the best games in the series. black flag was great but it kind of doesn't count as an assassin game. plus the story wasn't great in black flag. HITMAN 2016: we are only 1 season in but the story is very solid this time, unlike absolution. it has interesting characters too, like the shadow client and that providence dickhead Worst: Mass Effect 3 - it's not just the ending that is bad. it's half of the story too. lack of dialogue options, tali's face, the intro, the fact that cerberus is the enemy half of the time instead of the reapers... Shadowfennekin
Best: Saints Row 2, still my favorite game of all time GTA IV and TLAD AC Syndicate Mass Effect 1 and 2 Red Dead Redemption Fallout New Vegas Pokemon Black/White Worst: Saints Row Gat out of Hell, literally the only Saints Row game I haven't replayed. I hate it that much. Aliens were fun, but going to hell and everything was too far. WTF did they smoke cause I want some of that sh*t. And Dex? lol, no proper closure on him that was a BIG "f*ck you" to the fans. The Boss didn't even get to kill him..... Johnny and somebody who didn't even know who the hell Dex was did. And Kenzie? I hate her........ wish Viola was saved instead of her. The Ballad of Gay Tony: HOW do you turn a scary Antagonist character into a f*cking joke? HOW?! Hitman Absolution: *snore* Mass Effect 3: The endings were garbage. I pray Andromeda doesn't go that way. LincolnClay
Favourites: - Fallout 4 - Red Dead Redemption - GTA IV - GTA V (for characters, but the actual story was a mess, though I enjoyed the gameplay) - Mafia I, II and III - Bioshock I, II and III - Almost every AC game - Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (proved me wrong when I doubted how good it'd be) - Until Dawn - Beyond Two Souls/Heavy Rain - All the Batman: Arkham games There's too much to list for favourites so I'll go right into the least favourites... Least Favourites: - Call of Duty: Black Ops III (too much to keep track of, confusing as hell) That's all I can think of...at the moment...
