Happy Holidays from the GTANet team!

Will we have another "universe" in the future?

All of the GTA "universes" up to now have been (with exception of Chinatown Wars) defined by clear-cut technology changes - 2D/3D/HD.

If R* ever in the future feels like HD is getting too cramped and wants to rebuild another universe, what would they call it? The 2nd HD Universe?

God help us if it's the "Online Universe" - that'd be clearly R* telling us who prefer single-player where to stick it, wouldn't it?

Well, as the HD Universe stands now there's a lot of inconsistencies - both in tone and characters (especially when it comes to GTA Online-GTA V continuity)... so the HD Universe isn't perfect.

However, that said - a new universe wouldn't necessarily help, since all of the existing cities in the HD Universe would have to be remade, and that seems like a lot of work for a world so detailed. It made sense for the 3D Era since they were very much scaled down, but for HD they're much more accurate in their detail - so to make a new universe, and thus, remaking every city, seems pointless and would take a lot of time (especially considering the HD Universe has been built up for nearly 10 years, with only two major games thus far).

Personally, I don't see them Retiring the HD Universe for another few Games, at the least.

They still have some use out of the HD Universe yet, we're still yet to see San Fierro, Las Venturas and of course Vice City which we all know exist in this universe too, not to mention other places they've mentioned in the HD Universe such as Capital City, The Carraways (East of Liberty City) [Mentioned in GTA IV, TLAD, TBOGT and GTAV], etc.

I don't think there'll be "another" universe post-HD because I don't find any reason for HD feeling too cramped or something because they can expand and improve the game within the current universe, be the lore or any new additions to the series.

Which other franchise(s) outside Rockstar offers such a distinction?

I can't recall any. The technological changes wont be as wide and drastic as seen in the past, that the overall experience in terms of story, gameplay, etc would no longer need a "new" universe altogether.

Then there's Online which continues to grow and has become popular since launch.

The next big step could be to somehow make a way for crossover between their games having an Online universe, like RDR and GTA.

And when it hits on Oct. 1, it will give both players and developers a chance to perhaps evolve the series in ways that could never be done in an offline, narratively-focused game.

GTA Online could evolve in many crazy directions. We have lots of really neat ideas of how that might evolve and we will work with the audience to see what directions they want to go

I don't think we'll see a new universe, at least not for a while, nor do I want tone.

The HD Universe still has so much to offer - there are so may cities that haven't been redone plus a new universe would yet again kill any possibility of returning characters.

If they're re-imagining Liberty City or Los Santos again, I would think so. Although I hated that they scrapped 3D universe. I loved the loose links that carried through the games. I never quite got that feeling back. Except when McGreary was in V or Niko was mentioned. By then thought it wasn't such a biggie. I understand Rockstar's logic behind multiple universes. At least they did a nod to Grove St. I enjoyed that.

I didn't mind that the 3D era universe ended because it already spanned five games and three decades so it was time for something new IMO. The nostalgic nods/references have been pretty cool though.

As for another universe post-HD I just don't see it. The HD era is only in its infancy. There's still much more that can be expanded on before giving the series another kick start (so to speak).

I'd like them to revisit the 3D Universe once, sort of. I'd like them to do a GTA Vice City 20th Anniversary Edition in 2022. Completely revamped and reimagined in the same way that Crystal Dynamics' did with Tomb Raider: Anniversary.

As for GTA HD Universe: it's still got legs, as they say. Still plenty to explore. No reason to stop and reboot now.

I guess the next will be VR universe. However,I think HD universe is still not over, they still haven't shown HD Vice City, Las Venturas and San Fierro. If R* continues making new GTA games every 5+ years,HD universe may last til 2030s.

While I think it's unlikely,it would be cool if they would continue 3D universe as new smartphone games (if they can port an old 3D game on a smartphone, they could probably make a new 3D game for smartphones, using the same game engine as the old game).

All of the GTA "universes" up to now have been (with exception of Chinatown Wars) defined by clear-cut technology changes - 2D/3D/HD.

I feel that the storyline of the games decides the universe of the game rather than it's technology changes. For example, GTA Advance is a part of the 3D universe since it's a prequel to GTA3, but the game itself is a 2D game.

I have a feeling that there might be another universe in the future, in case R* decides to re-do any of their existing HD Universe cities with a completely different storyline, but however there are chances of this not happening because R* does not care about story mode anymore, and only the GTA Online universe will see some expansion.

I just hope the HD Universe stays on a little bit longer, preferably for the next two games.

Exactly. They will continue the HD Universe until they decide they want to do something that the HD Universe cannot fulfill and/or when they decide they want a change of direction and/or they decide they want a reboot. In other words, the decision is likely to be dictated by creative needs, not technological ones.

I was about to follow that up with this statement, "the previous 'reboots/change of universes' happened to co-incide with changes in technology" when I realised that actually the two previous major changes in technology had a part to play in the reboot process. Because it was the 3D technology that gave rise to such new possibilities; having the player represented in third person and interacting with the game world in a much more intuitive and natural manner, that it made them want to sweep away the previous universe and start again.

Then when they introduced the RAGE technology in GTA:IV with it's vast improvement in graphics, motion capture and proper expressive faces, it was then all about 'look at how deep and multilayered a story we can tell' that just didn't jibe with the carefree superficial (dare I say 'cartoon') tone of the stories told in the 3D era.

It's difficult to work out what major technology there might be that would make them think in such terms about changing away from the HD era. At the moment, all I can think is they they'll carry on with the HD era until they get fed up somehow.

A new universe will be created as soon as Rockstar gets tired of the current universe and they feel like they can't keep expanding the story

In that exact moment a new universe will be created which is basically a reboot to create new stories

I think making a new universe would be pointless.

There's really no need for it unless they seriously want and stick to having a more "realistic" series like IV and TLAD were.

VR universe lol..... no, just no

Non Funkable Token

Hope not. The idea of getting rid of the current universe is just sickening, and not necessary at all. Just don't use current characters/gangs/locations if you want, but that "hey, all the past stories never existed in this universe, forget them" is bullsh*t.

Let people keep their hopes up for some prequels-sequels-character returns or whatever they want.

At the end of the day R* keeps adding references to older games and easter eggs anyway, so...

Yeah I suppose you are right about the amount of games covering the 3D era.

I think so too. I think it's just logistics, I don't think Rockstar wants to make 2 or more different versions of a city based on the same city and have them both exist in the same universe. I'm purely speculating of course. I don't know why Rockstar discontinued the original universe, whether it was just going to be a pain, fitting in original locations within a re-imagined city or whether they thought It would just be better to start fresh.

If they do keep the same universe and re-do Los Santos again, if it's the same universe, they'll have to keep some buildings, roads and section of map to keep up with continuity and that may offer design implications and cause potential headaches for them and fans if certain places are left out etc.

I don't think there will be another re-imagining of the already used cities in HD Universe. Also HD universe has a long scope. There are cities like Vice City, Las Vebturas, San Fierro, Carcer City and even Capital City. Seeing that only 2 games have been made in HD Universe, there will be a lot more to come. The scope is vast.

Not in a while. I can see a few more games for HD Era. As all have said, Rockstar hasn't showed San Fierro, Las Venturas, Vice City, and other cities.

I wish 3D Era and HD Era are in same universe, but I can get over with it.

They probably might just continue with HD universe, I don't see why they would make a fourth one after all the trouble of recreating and adding new features.

I still believe that this whole 'universe' idea is artificial and there's nothing useful or interesting behind it.

After almost two decades of steady reading, i finally dropped all my DC books with this last reboot...such garbage.

OT: We haven't even seen the other two cities in SA let alone Vice City, Carcer, ect.. Pretty sure this "universe" will be around for at least another five to ten years. I'd call that a safe bet even.

And if I'm honest, I kind of wish that they didn't declare the III and HD universe to be separate.

I mean, would it have not been cooler if you were, say, playing GTA IV, and the united liberty paper guy said something like "You know, you're not the first person to tear up town like this. The "Legends" say that back in the early aughts, one man did more damage in about a week than any terrorist could do in a decade. Don't end up like him.". Or maybe not even a direct reference. Say, one of the dealers you were to work for were to say "Look, based on history, it's generally a good idea to hire a guy who is desperate for money and seems to be really good at not being killed". Those aren't my best examples of writing, they're on the fly, but my point stands that something could have been done with that.

This could've easily been in GTA V, too. Say, maybe a gangster or gangster group you're in a gunfight with were to say "Let's do this sh*t CJ style!" or even a dick joke like "Let's show him the johnson in all of us!". Again, not my best work but you can see where I'm going.

This whole "Separate universe" thing just kind of seems like they're trying to forget the GTA III era. And they shouldn't be, because the III era games were f*ckin' great.

^Yeah, i would have preferred they kept more of the continuity from the 3D universe, but at least we still get little references here and there.

While I love the seperate Universes a Claude or Toni reference in IV would have been awesome. When Niko's introduced to Jimmy Pegorino he could have said how using hired guns lead to the downfall of Salvatore and how he didn't want to end up like him.

In V they kinda did sorta mention the old Grove Street families

Though they were probably talking about some other people and not exactly CJ, Smoke, Ryder, and Sweet

New universe would be good IMO. And please do a different city this time. I'm getting tired of them 'reimagining' the same cities every gen.

I really only cared for the 3D era carrying over. I'm not really pushed to see anyone from the HD era again. Maybe Roman Bellic or Gay Tony.

So yeah, I'm happy whatever Rockstar decide to do. I still think they can unify all all the universes. Or re-introduce 3D era characters again. That would be shocker, it will be very nostalgic and difficult to get right.

For example, imagine you start working for a guy based on Brandt (the Big Lebowski's butler played by Phillip Seymour Hoffman) and his client wishes to remain anonymous and throughout the game you never know who that boss is for a long, long time but then during a big chapter or act finale mission it's revealed that it's been Tommy Vercetti or CJ calling the shots.

Imagine you it was modern day Vice City and you passed a drunken bum that's rarely seen and he spouts things like "I used to run this city" and it's speculated or hinted that it could be Vercetti but never confirmed.

What could be interesting is if they show alternate III era characters. Say a similiar yet different Tommy Vercetti or Vic Vance.

We saw someone that looked like CJ in IV which could hint that they exist but have different story.
