Getting money dropped on you = ban?

Recommended Posts

I just had a modder drop cash on me randomly, I immediately swapped sessions but still got about 20k dropped cash, with all the crazy new money removal and banning system, should I be worried about getting banned for this and my account reset?

Ask Rockstar.

Seriously, I wouldn't ban you myself for 20k, but I'm not Rockstar.

Short answer: no.

Long answer: I've had money involuntarily dropped on me more times than I can count, and I'm fine.

20,000 is microscopic compared to what some modders will do. I've got friends with over 20m tossed their way who haven't run into any issues before or now.

I was just asking because of the big bank account wipes on spawned money, and people being banned for glitching past the reset and spending said money.

$20k is pretty small, but to stay completely on Rockstar's good side:

Spend NONE of it (you may end up paying daily utilities, but don't worry about it)

Contact Rockstar Support immediately

They may take no action at all for such a small amount.

Well, with that new ban policy i would not take any chances for a month untill there is more clarity

if by then no single poor sob has come on here and say they have been banned because a modder dropped money on them, i would say it is safe.

The fact that you can get banned for somebody giving you money without your permission is some of the stupidest sh*t. I would report that sh*t to Rockstar if I were you but the fact that you have to be worried is just sad...

Imo if you're on old gen consoles don't bother, if you're on PC i'd contact R* just to be safe.

They should really have an option at the ATM / bank site to dump money bags if they're banning players for getting money.

Tbh I have never heard of anyone ever been banned for picking up dropped cash. I have dropped and have had cash dropped on me countless times and I nor the people I have dropped cash for have been banned even once. I have heard people being banned on old gen, but that is probably where the rumor was carried over from.

I know if you contact Rockstar about it, there is a chance they will remove more than the illegitimate cash.

What FlacidJack said.

With the new Ban policy in place the best thing you can do is report it to Rockstar, tell them what happened and that you don't want to be Banned or Wiped.

That way if anything does happen you have something to fall back on.

AFAIK, no one has been banned simply for having cash dropped on them (or voluntarily picking it up). It's suddenly spending a bunch of money out of proportion of the history of earning/spending that can trigger the moderators. It's usually been reported that it wasn't until they started spending millions all of a sudden that the ban hammers began to drop, and self-reporting to Rockstar took the bad money away with no issue to the player.

Yes you shall be banned and likely flogged. Consider buying shark cards to appease the GTA gods and pray they forgive your transgressions

They don't have an employee watching every single session. 20k are absolutely off the radar, they won't bother to check how you made that ridiculous sum.

They are basically checking accounts to ban people with clear signs of cheating. Not your case.

I am not going to worry then, and I am sure the guy who dropped said money will be banned as, on top of spamming bags of money to everyone he was also exploding people, going off radar with teleports, ramming people with chrome Duke o' Deaths, etc. It wasn't until people started screaming free money that the bags began to fall though.

That's fine, but if they remove all my legit money, there's going to be a problem.

It certainly wouldn't be the first time they did that.

Rockstar officially said that they won't ban people for having money dropped on them. It happened to me last year, I reported it, and they basically said, "Thanks for your honesty but we don't really care. We have an automated system to make the necessary adjustments to your account balance."

It wouldn't hurt to report it but I really doubt you'll get banned-- especially for such a small amount.

To keep the gameplay environment as fair as possible for legitimate players, we routinely do sweeps to separate out cheaters and modders, and to reverse any illegitimate transactions. These sweeps are based on in-game automated detection, examination of suspicious gameplay statistics, and also manually-reviewed evidence submitted by the Community. If you were not engaged in any willful cheating or exploiting yourself, you do not need to worry about getting caught up in our work to separate out cheaters from the rest of the population.

^^ Yeah, it's definitely been getting worse on the PC for script kids (esp. in the last week); at least half of the sessions I was in tonight had some kind of script kiddie activity going on (via chat, etc.) I got "auto-ditched" out of one of my farmed silver Dubsta 2s on Alta Street while driving to the central LSC to sell it. Needless to say, I quickly changed sessions... other players had lost all their weapons, some others had gained weapons.... typical script kiddie MO. Nothing new, other than they're back. I would expect money bag drops like summer 2015 if it keeps up (and R* can't plug the "mod" menu holes).

If you want to be safe, report it to R*, but I personally wouldn't, simply because every time I have in the past I've been told not to worry about it from R* Support (one example below).

However(!) note though that there's a slight chance R* might decide to money wipe you--I only say that because it did happen to me once (after I reported it)...and along with the "modded" money (like Gaffa noted above) they also wiped out 3-6 million of my legit earned GTA$ along with some Shark Card GTA$ mixed in with that (which really ticked me off)... so it's kind of a "luck of the draw" thing with R*.

It would be nice to get some clarification from R* Support as to if there's been a change in this regard--the new ban warning certainly sounds ominous enough that it's worth taking some precautions...

Hello DentureDynamite,

We apologize for the delay in our response.

In the past, a small number of GTA Online players sought to exploit the game by generating and distributing game-breaking amounts of in-game cash, disrupting the experience for other players. Anyone who innocently received GTA$ as a result of these exploits, but did not engage in cheating to acquire it did not face any further action - the funds were just removed, and players were able to keep any items they had owned at that time. Those who actively engaged in cheating and exploiting the game in this manner were, however, subject to in-game penalties at our discretion. This may have included being placed in isolated cheater pools or banned from GTA Online altogether.

At this time, you do not need to do anything further and this ticket will resolve on its own. We will continue to issue hotfixes and title updates on an ongoing basis to counter the negative impact this has had on gameplay. We look forward to seeing you Online!

Best regards,

Vallen A.

normally you dont get banned for receiving modded money, you get banned for spending the money, so yeah

My instinct would be to lay low, but I've never had the situation before.

Well I did have billions dropped on me back in the day, but I turned off before it saved them. But you get the idea - I don't really know what I'm talking about.

Yeah I had $54 million that was mostly legit, bar a few millions dropped on me across several months, removed and reset down to $20,000.

That's why now I've got this picture in case there's any question whatsoever (and I'm actually a bit further than this now too) - http://i.imgur.com/K3aHrIy.jpg

I do the same--document your legit GTA$ as much as possible; including grabbing video of any money drops if/when it happens that you can use as proof to show R* Support.

With the new ban policy they can do whatever they want, the problem with it is that it's automated and all decisions are final.. I'd say the chances of it pinging you are very low but I don't feel like anyone is 100% safe anymore.

^^ And I wonder what they can do if the online progress is deleted after banning an innocent player. Can they recover the progress or it'd be like the early days when players had to start it over because they simply couldn't do anything about what has been lost? I hope they have a backup of all character's data after banning someone, just in case.

Modders have been getting bad again, after the whole money drop incident, I just had a modder "punish" me for suicide bombing him by freezing me and killing me, and somehow following me across lobbies when we had no friends or crews in common. With the whole new ban system I'd figure modders would lay low but the opposite is happening.

Now that's pretty scary! If there's no way to lose these guys by changing sessions (other than going into invite-only), griefing and general player abuse could ratchet itself up to a whole new level.
