I played WoW for a few years back in the day paying a monthly fee. I don't have a problem with occasionally buying a sharkcard to reward *ockstar for building an awesome, no monthly fee, online sandbox racing/FPS/strategy/social game.

I've spent $150 on sharkcards (with rebates so even then I got more than my money's worth. Thanks *ockstar! :) ).

GTAO would still have a great $/hour of gameplay value compared to most other titles, even if i would bought 2 Megalodons. Most people don't see that.they're playing the same game für 3 years with 1 70$ purchase. How many Assassins Creeds, CoDs, FIFAs or Battlefields where bought in that time?

I've never bought Shark Cards, but I don't have an issue with those that do. It's your money and you can do what you want with it.

I've earned money exclusively by playing the game (plus the $500K given to players in 2013 and winning $1M on a R* competition in 2015) and I've never wanted for anything. The only scramble for cash I experienced was the first Roosevelt in Feb 2014 which involved a lot of intense grinding and then almost clearing me out but despite that I've managed to get everything I want since I started playing.

I'm not one for Supers or bling so maybe my money goes a little further - still though, there are plenty of ways to make money if you enjoy playing the game :)

I refuse to believe that 3 people on this forum have spent over $12,000 on shark cards lol

I think in total I've spent sixty dollars on Shark Cards. That includes a twenty dollar gift for a friend. I don't like the idea of paying for in-game currency (I'd rather pay directly for the content) but I can appreciate why R* went that way. I didn't need to spend any money on Shark Cards, as earning in-game is generally easy and enjoyable. I did it as a show of support for the continued development of a game I like very much.

I've brought a few over the years.. Once when I was given some Xbox points as a gift and the other when I wanted the valentines stuff and I hadn't been able to play much due to work commitments...

Purchased a sharkcard about a week or two after I joined to get myself established. Living out of a two car garage with one crappy car and hardly any money just made me feel disheartened. I figured if GTA was going to be a grind, it would be good to have something nice to come home to at least.

So I bought a $20 card - $1.25M iirc and I used it to purchase a high end luxury appt, all the weapons/ammo I needed and upgraded a stolen Schafter, Baller and Felon GT to keep me content. Glad I bought it when I did and haven't had a need to purchase one since.

Just to put that cost into perspective you could buy a billion dollars worth of shark cards or you could buy this on eBay.

There is little 'perspective' when it comes to money, what one man earns in his entire life another can earn in a day.

A billion GTA$ might be worth the value of the cars you have posted but it is still just pennies to some people.

I bought a couple shortly after I started playing, not over a million though, just enough for me to be able to be some stuff while I figured out how to quickly make money.

Never bought one as I never needed too, I'm not against them though and would buy one if I felt the need.

Also, isn't their a limit on how much cash you can add with Sharkcards? I seem to remember that in the past.

Now that would surprise me... if there is I would guess somebody somewhere has must have reached it.

It was a dark, shameful time for me.

But admitting it is the first step to recovery.

And thankfully it wasn't much.

Loads of support topics about it, I guess it's to stop little timmy grabbing his moms card and buying a weeks salary worth of cards.

Interesting and thanks for sharing :)

Looks like there is not a cap on how many Shark Cards you can buy/use but the money just gets put on hold until you balance drops a little. Strange way of handling it, especially as some of the people on that link are having issues getting amounts that are less than the price of some in game items.

A slightly buggy system maybe as it seems difficult to gauge what the limits are.

Unpopular opinion incoming,

If you have ever purchased a sharkcard. To me you are the problem with the gaming industry. You are supporting these terrible business practices and I blame you for most of the problems I have with GTA online among many other games. I hope the video game industry crashes and people just stop supporting these terrible business choices. Micro-transactions/DLC/pre-orders, it's all trash and things will continue to go down this path as long as people will throw their money supporting these businesses. They sell us broken, incomplete games and then "patch" on day one because the game isn't finished or in some cases they sell us the missing pieces later down the road or worse, they sell us in game funds and make it very time consuming to make those funds that they are selling us.

It stupid, I personally don't like where the gaming industry is headed. It is extremely difficult and rare for me to put money into a game I already spent $80 on and feel good about it.

Where the industry is "headed"? Is not headed there dude, it's already there. It has been for a long time. This is gaming now and it's not going to change.

I see your point but I disagree. The landscape of the industry has changed, back in the day the makers had no choice but to launch games complete, as there wasn't the online aspect to allow them to patch games. If a game made it to final production with a bug, then that was stuck for life, unless they launched a whole new version. The current set up allows games to change without the need for a full new title. Companies like Rockstar use the cards, but don't charge for the download, which to me is a fairer system for the players.

Also, you payed $80 for a game, anything up to 3 years ago, and for that time they've continued to update, run support, the social club and so on, so that $80 has worn very thin by now, asking for extra to keep the game going is expected imo. Rockstar are a business at the end of the day.

Maybe Rockstar is on the right track. People like me with little time having the shark cards are good. Drop $20 or $30 a year to help give those extra funds for the bigger items like a yacht or a buzzard at one point.

This in turn is more then likely making new content free. Not all new content is going to appeal to everyone nor is paid DLC. Fallout 4 is an example. Some people like all the DLC, some like a few and don't like the others.

While you say it's a bad business model, I say Rockstar is onto a good idea and hope the others take up this idea.

Dangerous and sad

Seriously laughing at those who bought 1 billion worth. If they are being serious then I really don't understand why you would waste that much REAL for VIRTUAL money.

Yeah, I was once like you. Naive and so full of hope.

Those days are gone. The gaming industry is never going back to how it used to be. It's thanks to the Korean MMO market that we have this style of nickel and diming. It worked. Even when you could buy complete games, MMO's like EQ or WOW, people still played F2P Korean Grindfests that offered power for cash. Back then, when it was at its most expensive... people spent thousands of dollars just to have an edge.... And it worked. The big publishers saw this and they started testing... little by little... and now, here we are. :)

For the longest time I avoided games that added DLC. I thought it was stupid. And then single player games started doing it. Highly anticipated releases started offering season passes and some even started putting micro-transactions in single player games (Dead Space 3 for starters)... and still... people bought it.... The worst offended for this are games like The Sims or Train Simulator (has over $1000 of DLC).. It's just the nature of gaming. People will do anything to keep up with the jonses or to have a little bit of an edge. Some are driven by their need to have a complete collection. And others, like myself, are driven by a lack of time. :)

I love GTA Online. It's practically the MMO I've always wanted. (Not quite, still a ways to go...) Big open city. Lots to do. Dress up. Cars and collectibles. Housing. Movie making. Photo opportunities. It's a very complete package. But I don't care for the grind. Nor do I always have time to grind. So sometimes when something comes out and I really want it, I'll treat myself with my disposable income. I've spent some money on Shark Cards so far. Between 1-10 million so far. And only when they're on sale (50-70% off). It helps pay for additional DLC and makes my quality of life in game easier. ..Seeing as this is the new industry, there's not much you can do to beat it, as much as you wish to try.

In all honesty, you say that we shark card buyers are the problem... but really, you too are the problem. Unless you're pirating the game... well.. then you're supporting the practice just as much as we are. We're just honest about it. ;)

No one did, the game wouldn't physically let you unless you managed to spend a full shark card then add another, as far as I can see the game will not let you hold more than about $15,000,000 in shark card money at any one time, so you'd have to clear that before it'd add the next one.

Just idiots trying to look impressive.

I'd say Pre-order bonuses are the real evil of the gaming industry.

Shark Cards are more a middle way, while I see why they exist I still can't recommend anyone to purchase one, especially for what you get but each to their own.

Gnocchi Flip Flops

I've spent 50 bucks over the course of 3 months. To pay more is just ridiculous to me. By then you're just exceeding the price of the actual game (60 bucks) which is just retarded. I seriously doubt a few million dollars is worth a real game.

Will I ever buy one again? Absolutely not. They're a complete ripoff and the fact that Rockstar's DLC runs off of them is pathetic. To think this is the company I once admired a few years ago.
