Grand Theft Auto III - 15th Anniversary!

Well, this is it, folks! Hard to believe, yet today this game already turns 15 years!

For some, this game may seem outdated, for some, a chapter of their life that has been read and closed, but for me, and for a number of other people, this game is and (I hope) will always remain a defining part of my life, one of the few stable things that remained in my life while everything else around me shifted and changed. In fact, this game has been such an inexplicable part of my life that playing it brings back memories of days long past, and I find myself losing in the memories, mostly pleasant, to note.

However you may feel about this game - whether fascinated, indifferent, or unmaused, whether eager to play or weary of it already, let us all remember the 'progenitor' of all the other GTAs that followed and a reason why they all existed. Let us take our hats off to the game that brought about the commercial success of Grand Theft Auto as a whole, not just being a commercial success by itself.

And in recognition of that, let us say, "Happy Birthday, GTA III", and recollect all the finest moments you had while playing this game.

Happy Birthday, GTA III!

Ah, GTAIII. Can't believe that it's 15 years old already. Still my favorite game not only in the entire series, but of all time. (Fun fact, it's the only game I've gotten a platinum trophy for on PSN.) It's probably one of the most revolutionary games ever, and quite frankly, the other games wouldn't be as good had GTAIII never been made. It really did change my perspective on open-world games for good, and the main reason why it's my favorite genre type of game. However, what surprises me most is not how many copies I own, or how many times I've powered through to 100% completion, but how many other people on the forums share the same affinity for a 15-year old game. Who knew that we would have almost 60 group efforts towards beating the game, as well as various topics discussing quirky aspects of the game, like what happened to Maria or why a texture of the Colombian Cartel skin appears on the bottom of their boots. We also got various in-progress mods, like remaking the game to look like its earlier alpha stages, and a remake of the improved XBOX port to PC, not to mention the various coding mods to add new features. It's really the community that keeps this game alive, and I'm surprised that it's so dedicated.

I've made a ton of memories with this game. For example, learning (and miserably failing) how to fly the Dodo for the first time and trying to explore places that were inaccessible, like Ghost Town and the Portland EMV Crane Ship. Another would be the crazy fun I've had with the story missions, from the various street races, the Mafia storyline, and serving a clean dish of revenge to Catalina's heli at the very end. It was the first game where I experienced true virtual freedom, such as waging wars with the Police, FBI and the dreaded Army, and the side-missions like Vigilante, Firefighter, Paramedic and Taxi. I actually relived some of those memories while typing this, and I'm probably gonna spend all day playing it again. Holy crap, I love GTAIII.

I still loathe the rampages more than anything.

The first GTA I ever played and my favorite one as well, I have so many memories from my childhood, playing it over and over, doing all crazy stuff or just driving around listening to the same songs again and again, to a point where I would know them perfectly. It's probably my most played GTA (not really sure though as I played every GTA for a sh*t ton of hours), and I still haven't finished it to 100% yet, not that it's something that I usually accomplish when I play GTA but still something that I find pretty funny thinking about it. What I find fascinating is that this game has a unique atmosphere that I've never seen in any other game, not even in LCS for some reason, and that makes it even more unique and different from its predecessors, this iteration of Liberty City is pretty much outdated now with GTA IV but it still has something powerful going on when I play it, especially in Portland and perhaps on the hills of Shoreside Vale looking at the entire city with the sound of a dodo flying nearby, I don't know it's something that I always enjoy when I'm not f*cking sh*t up, same thing with the ambiance sound; which is also in Vice City; that makes it very special and relaxing to me. The AI is also something that I love f*cking with, making peds fight each other, or letting them die by "accident" as they're not very bright, it's always cracking me up, and it's always entertaining to do all sort of things with them, something that is missing from other GTAs was that some peds punch others for no reason which creates sometime huge fights and then once they're all dead, other peds run to see their corpses for a few seconds and then mind about their business, such a small detail but I just love the lack of humanity from the AI.

Anyway, I could go on and on... so Happy Birthday GTA III!

Liberty City's dark & seedy atmosphere is still unmatched. :)

GTA III, the game that pretty much defined my childhood, opened me up to the GTA Series, and led me to prefer open-world games over any other type of games.

Before GTA III, racing games were always my thing, but I grew tired of driving on the same tracks over and over again; I wanted to explore! I found out about Driver and Driver 2, but even those games were limited and the missions were so hard to pass. In the summer of 2004, my cousin introduced me to GTA III while I visiting. My mind was immediately blown -- there was so much freedom! You could do anything! Unfortunately, at the time I only had a PlayStation 1, so I was unable to play the game when I arrived back home. A few months later, my friend gave me his old (and somewhat broken) PS2 because he got the new Slim model. My brother took me to buy some games, and the first and only game I bought was GTA III. The rest is history :)

Happy birthday to one of the greatest and most revolutionary games of all time! :beerhat:

I grew up passionately in games and GTA III will be with me, coming from the PS1 and Dreamcast times and playing GTA top downs at such an early age (five years old) I've came on a bit late on the Ps2 as I had it in 2005. Played SanAndreas first then I got GTA III as my mum bought it for me, then I read the liberty city guidebook inside it as I always do it for every time I get a new game before I actually get home and boy I was only 10 but I knew GTA III was a different level (nowadays at lot of kids will assume an older game is sh*t) but anyway I did not regret every minute of it.

I remember standing there looking over Stauntion island from Portland thinking "damn I need to get over there and I wanna explore it" and its the same with Shoreside vale too but the moment I've unlocked it, I was so happy. Thing is I did not get that feeling with SanAndreas nor with any other GTA game at the time, it is atmospherically brilliant. I've also remember the days finding out about Ghost town on the early days of YouTube and I was very excited about it and read it up but I've realised that to fly the dodo plane and get there was mindf*cking difficult like mission impossible, I've actually dreamt in real life going to ghost town on GTA III and the day I've managed to do it, I was just over the moon. No game apart from GTA III has put me in that level of bonding so close to a video game.

Long live Grand Theft Auto III.

Me too, dude! I remember not being able to pass "Cutting the Grass" for months and thus being confined to Portland for a long time. I would stand at the waterfront in Chinatown just looking at Staunton Island wondering what it was like on the other side. When I finally passed "Cutting the Grass", I was so excited to finally be able to explore Staunton Island and eventually Shoreside Vale. Liberty City in III never ceases to amaze me.

Damn, fifteen years now? I feel so old, but happy birthday to the game where all started. I always will love my PS2 memories with it. Happy birthday to the old but gold 2001's Liberty City.

I don't know what to say because I would repeat most of your words. Can't believe that 15 years have passed. This is a game that will always remain special for me.

Happy birthday! Also huge thanks to all the people who keep modding it.

gta 3 is where gta started to be good. lcs and vcs is where they went downhill, and after 4 (4 not included) they f*cked up.

Damn, I can't believe it's been 15 years! I remember buying this game used when I didn't even have the console to play it on yet. I had a Nintendo Gamecube and was buying True Crime: Streets of L.A. I was looking through the used game section at Gamestop and saw GTA III and had to have it. It was like $6.99 and I was getting a ps2 in a couple of months so I said what the hell and went ahead and bought it. I still play it to this day, and I love that they have made it available for download on ps4 now too.

15 years already? Holy sh*t.. I remember when the PS2 was just released and i was looking at all the magazines for GTA 3 screenshots.. Playing it for the first time was just magical :D

The dark atmosphere and story (which a lot of people dislike) was really awesome.. and still is! It will always be my favorite game and it's also the only game that i can play everytime without getting bored.
