I feel like GTAO's car scene has enough content for its own racing

...game.

I feel that ever since launch, GTA Online has had one of the strongest and most prominent car cultures in video games. And as time passes, that culture gets stronger and stronger. It's evidenced in-game, with activities such as car meets, cruises, lowrider hopping contests, and impromptu street races. It's evidenced on this forum. We have had hit threads like Shootinalloveryourface's Best Ever GTA:OF Vehicle Showdowns, Josh.exe's Vehicle Elimination Games, appreciation threads, and rate the vehicle above you threads. Hell, there is an entire subforum dedicated to discussing the vehicles in GTA Online, something you won't find in the forums for the other GTA games. And of course, there's the actual racing aspect. It's spawned so many prominent crews and teams, some of which have their own forums.

And Rockstar knows this and has been constantly injecting new vehicles into the game.

I feel that there's so much content in the car/racing scene now to produce an entire racing game that revolves around said scene. A Midnight Club-esque game set in the GTA universe would be pretty cool.

I know what you're asking. What's the point if we can already race in GTA Online? Well, this racing game would dive deeper into the racing scene. It would be able to implement features that have been requested by the racing community that would have otherwise been difficult to implement in GTA Online such as...

  • A wider variety of classes
  • Drag racing
  • Drift contests
  • Pink slip races
  • Manual transmission
  • Car tuning
  • Nitrous oxide

I know what you're thinking. This is yet another silly topic by Giantsgiants. Well, I don't see such a game ever materializing too. And even if it does somehow get made, no way would it dethrone GTA Online. But I still thought this was a cool idea to discuss.

Why not this as a DLC?

Give us a racing DLC similar to the Biker DLC, but have it focus on the different criminal aspects of street racing. Think the first Fast and Angry movie.

This is my favorite quote on these forums this month.

Like I implied above, I think some of the features in the OP would probably be too difficult to put into GTA Online as a DLC. I can see things such as rewriting the vehicle class system and programming manual transmission as tasking and difficult tasks for Rockstar. And with pink slip racing, there's the potential for dupe/money glitches, which is something Rockstar probably doesn't want.

Well they've already started changing some of the vehicle classes and all the vehicles in the game have transmissions coded (# of gears, gear ratio's, final drive, clutch times, etc).

I think the most difficult thing would be buttons.

Other than the classes being sh*t in balance, i think its close to the perfect racing game. Almost spend as much time racing here than in gran turismo 5

I want some cars that are akin to the Sultan RS. Wouldn't mind the return of a couple IV cars like the Sentinel (E49), or the Hakichou.

I know a lot of people have already said but they need to go more in-depth with the vehicles. Add more mods to every vehicle and some that make a real difference. Have endurance races, with big prizes and a limited number of racers, or at least put in a manual option, ffs.

Yes, with traffic. Sick of the emptiness of stunt races. And no one plays regular ones ss much.

As much as I enjoy racing in this game--it's actually something of a love/hate relationship, I do think many things need to be considered first and foremost before it branches off into a separate game entirely.

It goes without saying, but the person(s) responsible for vehicles need to ensure that classes are properly balanced and that one or two specific cars are not required to even be competitive within races. I am not saying that all cars should be identical in terms of performance, but each should have a distinct character with pros, cons, different feel/experience, etc. There should not be huge gaps in terms of average lap times where everyone more or less owns a carbon copy of the same one or two cars. We need more variety and have it where certain cars realistically handle tracks in distinct ways. A super car, for example, should not be able to climb mountains better than a true off-road vehicle.

Catchup/Slipstream -- Please, rid of these things or at least turn them off by default. If they are kept, both should be nerfed a bit.

The ability to have races that employ selections from a variety of classes would be a nice touch as well. Why can't we have races where super cars compete against motorbikes, sedans against coupes, or a mix of even a wider variety of vehicles? Something such as this would need to take advantage of all options available.

Fix the game mechanics; no more pavement surfing advantages; damage should be more realistic and impact a vehicle's performance on a more drastic level; hitting lamp posts and structures should stop a vehicle dead in its tracks (inflicting appropriate damage)--there should not be instances where the streets are littered with these objects and cars are able to continue racing; and more weather options with much more realistic effects in regards to how they impact driving.

In proper races (outside of street races), penalties should be handed out for dirty racing and poor sportsmanship. Pitting someone should reflect appropriate damage to both cars, and it should never be a case of just spin someone out and take off. That isn't realistic at all and it needs to go. It wouldn't hurt to also add more pit lane options for repairs and the like for proper racing tracks.

These are just a few things outside of what has been mentioned, but I would like to see a proper racing game built around the GTA world. However, before that happens, so many things need to be considered and changed. It's a good idea in theory though.

Maybe the single player damage mechanic? You get a lot more variety, with things like collapsed suspension and jammed wheels that you just don't see in online.

If you want that, check this petition made by GtaWiseGuy (who have made the tuners and outlaws fan made trailer.)

http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/gta-5-tuners/ ;)

I think his idea sucks... I would hate being chased all the time by wannabe cops taking all my money, when all i do is play the game as it is meant to.

so you like sitting for hours on loading screens ? :p

being serious, i kinda agree on the cop thing, and i'm pretty sure wasn't even mentioned in his trailer or the other videos he posted about.

but if you saw one of those videos, he's damn right on everything, specially on the part where everything is made inside the session .... without loading screens.

wich this is how gta online should have been .

basically all my friends dropped gta for the loading screens, myself included, i barely play gta, and when i join i barely play races, or missions, for the simple fact it take so much time to join, find ppl, start a race .... then you get bumped and there's no way to catch up.

whatever he say, as long as it's not behind another loading screen, is more then welcome.

I agree with everything you said exept penalites for dirty racing..and poor sportman ship and removal of slip stream. I believe dirty racing is a part of GTA racing. Always has been.. Slip stream just needs to be tweaked to only work at certain speeds... and it should turn off when breaking or going slow.

But R* needs to balance all the vehicles in their class.. and R* doesn't do common sense balance fixes.. So none of this will ever happen.

The mechanics of being able to spin someone out in this game are ridiculous. Yes, I know it were possible in previous games, but doing so should damage both cars as it would in a real life scenario. It should also take less damage to render a car completely unusable where one is forced to either respawn or exit the race (depending on preferred settings).

I think there should at least be an option to enable penalties in races. Dirty racing ought to be reserved for races with GTA settings; I don't personally subscribe to the notion that it is required or should be condoned in all situations. Some of us like to race without people driving backwards or treating every race as if it were a demolition derby. Penalties for doing such could include lap time penalties or removal from the race entirely if the infraction is serious and deliberate. However, if you want races with the ability to race dirty without consequence, you should be given that option as well. I'm simply more about adding a variety of options for lobbies/race types and of course, as much realism as possible. Edited by -LN-

Why not this as a DLC?

Give us a racing DLC similar to the Biker DLC, but have it focus on the different criminal aspects of street racing. Think the first Fast and Angry movie.

They would just f*ck it up and give us public session only missions and more businesses we will never profit off of.

Meh, for a racer it's just too basic, it's over a decade behind a competent racing game like Forza Horizon in absolutely everything from graphics to driving mechanics.

Test drive unlimited 2 would be it's closest rival which is what, over 5 years old? And ofcourse I'd much like the cars to be actually based on its real life counterparts.

I also don't think there is that big of a racing community to have a dlc dedicated to them. There are more drivers than racers that just love cruising around or an excuse to drive, partly why I play missions so much so I can take different cars for a spin.

??? Both the CEO and Biker DLC's have been extremely profitable. And for a solo player doing either or both is the most profitable activity in the game, besides cheating.

I find it disturbing how amusing people think it is to ruin car shows with explosions. I stopped thinking multi-car explosions were interesting when I was a tween. It's why I joined car crews with strict no-nonsense guidelines.

If GTA were a racing game it would be below MC:LA which came out way back in 2008. It would be heavily dated, the physics would be lacking and it would a 6 or 7/10 and forgettable game.

Pink slip races will never happen. Too easy to transfer high end vehicles to lower characters. "What? I lost the race against your Faggio? Oh well, here are the keys to my X80 I guess."

Or imagine how many tickets would be opened with R* by people who were pitted by some douche canoe resulting in them losing their ride (or claim that happened after losing fair and square).

And even if you instituted rules like same value vehicles, non-contact only, can't sell vehicles won, etc. It would only ruin the spirit of the race. What's the point in winning a vehicle that's essentially exactly what you already own but can't sell?
