So, help me understand here someone, please. Caveat: I'm still only in chapter 3, haven't gotten to the end, so if there are spoilers involved, please tag accordingly.

But can you or can you not, in the regular game go to Mexico or Guarma?

Not (yet) without glitches.

Neither? Because they clearly designed Guarma to be played...I mean, it's a finished part of the game. Part of DLC, presumably?

They designed it primarily to be a break point in the story. It isn't meant to be explored that much, and I doubt there will be a dlc on it.

Good days were spent here analyzing and proposing some wild theories about Mexico and expanded deserts to the west and north of New Austin. Some were overly ambitious. The map is truly large and I think it's somewhere between 2×-2.5× the size of Redemption. The trails and roads are complex and intertwined, making it harder to learn your ways easily around the world without a map. I won't even talk about how on the top of how larger the map is, there are much more towns, villages, ranches and shacks than in Redemption. The production scope is mind-boggling and Redemption looks flat and basic in comparison.

With Redemption 2, I think Rockstar has closed this universe and will move on to somewhere else fresh in the next Red Dead game. I can think of them re-imagining the whole Western and Southern states with only having the Redemption states (New Austin, The Grizzlies, New Hanover, Lemoyne, West Elizabeth) referenced by name. It'd get tiring if they keep using the same maps over and over, and especially if they create an expansive desert, they'd have to move past New Austin and do a completely different region.

Yes, and I'm still waiting for BretMaverick to return and admit he went out on the longest limb of the crazy tree. :)

I agree with your overall point that it doesn't seem likely they'd reuse the same map again. Of course, I imagine that RDR3 is probably another 8 years off. This one was a massive undertaking and they won't half-ass the next either - it's just not the Rockstar way. By then, who knows what will be possible technically speaking, or even what their goals will be. Will they push farther into detailed realism? Will they move back to a more movies-inspired action shooter? And will the next game still involve some of the characters we know, or will they craft an entirely new story? These things will inform the map.

I don't expect a third trip to New Austin, or a second to New Hanover, but I don't know what I do expect either. It's a long way off.

@Nutduster Not only it's a long way off, but it's not guaranteed that there will be a new Red Dead game for the next consoles cycle (i.e. PS5 and Xbox whatever). Many reasons play into this, but in this generation we only got GTA V remastered and Red Dead. It's likely to be the opposite in the next generation, with Redemption 2 remastered and GTA VI. Hell, even GTA 6 isn't coming anytime soon, probably not earlier than 2021-2022, and more so Rockstar wouldn't rush it out during the early years of  new consoles. Their games sell the best at the peak of a cycle, at least since GTA 5.

Is it the time to start discussing what Rockstar is preparing next? I don't think so. It's early. Redemption 2, as an original single player package, will remain fresh for another year at least, and Red Dead Online will probably keep delivering for years to come.

Hell, I've barely scratched the surface on this map--I have zero inclination to even contemplate what R* may do next.

Going back to Guarma, someone help me understand here though--I just don't get it. Why put it in, why render it so fully if it's not playable in the sense of being in the story and part of the game whereby you have to glitch into it to even get there? Doesn't add up. Pardon me if I'm being dense here.

It is in the game though.  It's a one-off story location like North Yankton in GTA V (though you spend longer in Guarma).

Visits to off the map places are kinda a tradition with Rockstar, not every game has them but there's been a few times where they've taken the player somewhere off the map in a story mission and once you're back you're not able to visit it again.

I rushed to make sure I grabbed a couple Parrot features from Guarma, only to realize there's no Trapper use for them.  A lost Trapper opportunity!  Similar to the albino cougar and lion in the Stranger missions.

And what about the West Coast for Red Dead 3?  They mention San Francisco... it'd be the perfect location for the Gold Rush.  This could include the Northwest as well for variety.

Yeah, I think that's where the most logical place will be for the next Red Dead game, expanding to the west to include California. We again get deserts in the south, but proper and lively this time, and the typical mountain ranges, snowy peaks and forests as we increasingly head north. Coming to us in 2026 or so!

No idea why i'm still keeping on with this map lol but i finally completed the game and decided to put together a collectibles map. There's plenty of others out there, but here's my take on it:

Could be a very interesting place- Mediterranean coastlines, foggy temperate rainforests, towering redwoods, huge mountain ranges, and bone-dry deserts. Similar to RDR1 & 2, but more extreme and varied in verticality. I could see this map potentially covering:

  • Mid-California + A San Francisco analogue (it was a Gold Rush boomtown during the mid-19th century)
  • The Pacific Northwest (Washington + Oregon)
  • The Sierra Nevadas/ Cascade Mountains
  • Great Basin + Salt Flats + Death Valley

Arthur did mention that he's been to California and Oregon before (from his talk with Mary-Beth when she asks him about the flowers in his tent), but it would be nice to see a character from even earlier, like Landon Ricketts. An earlier timeline could even cover the gold rush, the transcontinental railway, the gunslinger era, and the Indian Wars.

so, now that the game is out

Spoiler

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT THE DAMNED PURPLE DOTS WERE ON THE LEAKED MAP??!?

I still cant figure it out!! They seem random! I was thinking maybe they're the spots that change over time, but there's a lot of stuff left off of that and some of the spots don't seem to change. I don't think any special missions happen in those places. Is it for multiplayer?! Was it scrapped?! Did they move the points? Have you guys already figured it out and I've just missed it?! I was looking forward to figuring out what those mysterious dots were. they're the only thing on the legend of the leaked map that isn't legible.

WHAT ARE THE PURPLE DOTS???!!?!

*Just noting that I’m comparing the final map with the 2016 leaked map and not visiting in game locations*

On the 2016 map, the one under the words Big Valley says Appleseed Timber Co.

That’s there in the final map.

A little to the south is another one, I can’t tell what it says, but I believe it may be Fort Riggs on the final map. Definitely does not say that on the 2016 map.

There’s nothing on the final map near Horseshoe Overlook that could be the one on the 2016 map.

The one near Butcher Creek is where the railway is being built at the start of the game, and then complete at the end.

The one to the north is extremely difficult. That entire area is completely different on the two maps. 2016 map has it in Cumberland Forest, directly south of The Loft, but the final map has nothing south of it.

Hope this helps :)

Thinking about what @Cozzisaid, there’s something odd (& spoilery so read with caution) about the camp locations on the 2016 map.

The listed camps and gang hideouts/camps are:

Hanging Dog Ranch

Colter

Horseshoe Overlook

Dewberry Creek

Shady Belle

Criard Slaughterhouse

Lakay

Beaver Hollow

Hanging Dog Ranch, Criard Slaughterhouse and Dewberry Creek are not used as camps. However, in the chapter 2 mission where Arthur and Charles scout a new location, they do stop at Dewberry Creek with intentions of moving the gang there. This leaves Hanging Dog Ranch and Criard Slaughterhouse as the  only locations that aren’t used by the gang.

Questions Raised:

Was the gang intended to stay at Dewberry Creek during chapter 3?

Were there two cut chapters that had the gang stay at Hanging Dog Ranch and Criard Slaughterhouse?

To conclude, I’d say it’s safe to assume that the 2016 leaked map is from a very early development stage and not from the time it leaked. This can also be supported with the northern portion of the map (Ambarino, Cumberland Forest and Roanoke Ridge) having notable differences from the 2016 leaked map.

The purple dots:

Purple in the legend says "Event Areas".

Event areas are things that get built or destroyed as you progress through free roam and chapters in RDR 2.

1) near Strawberry it says "Appleseed Timber co" (dudes who cut the forest)

2) under it says 'Fort Riggs military camp" (not sure if this area changes during the game, possibly cut as an "event" ? possible DLC? It was supposed to host the events of US army holding the Native Americans captive)

3) under Horseshoe overlook it says "Castor Ridge", (the house which gets built by a father and his sons)

4) then we have "Central Union Railroad camp" (which is the railroad extension that gets built during the game)

5) above Bacchus bridge, whatever it said, it's been completely cut out it seems.

A few more locations where the map changes have been added through the game, as well as a few buildings in cities like Valentine, Blackwater and Saint Denis. Possibly a few more undiscovered yet.

You can see some of them in this video

I searched for some older real map that had a west coast... and yeah, it some how makes the whole thing look more like the United States.  I just heard Marston spent time in the Yukon, so the northern most northwest could be Yukon like territory.

Yeah, go further back and have Landon Ricketts be a major character.  I'm surprised he wasn't in Red Dead 2.  More Native American stories.  The one thread in Red Dead 2 felt odd being towards the end.  Improve the Red Dead options by creating a mining business, similar to how you could upgrade the Camp.  Maybe that's your crew... a gold mining group to prospect around and fend off bandits?

If you're up to trying, it'd be awesome to see locations changed by the end of the game, such as Pronghorn Ranch and Traintracks.  Maybe some dot or small symbol for where all the caves are.  I noticed the official Saint Denis maps doesn't have all the routes through buildings.

I was wondering this too. I did find mention of a "Tallulah Jetty Gang" in a newspaper article though, I can try to get a pic up tomorrow.

Also, it's nice to be back fellas. I've barely been here since release lol...

Tallulah Jetty was replaced by Van Horn. A lot of people seem to think Annesburg and Van Horn traded places but that's not quite true, Van Horn was shifted South to where Tallulah Jetty was and Annesburg remains in the same spot or possibly moved further North, but I just think the shoreline in the leaked map doesn't do justice to how long it actually is.

It's also possible Siskia was moved slightly more south, seems like it.
