Mapping Red Dead Redemption 2! Landmark Analysis Thread

Where is the Lake Isabelle and Mt. Hagen? They writes:

Quote

One of the more well-known peaks in the snowy Grizzlies of Ambarino, Mount Hagen towers above Lake Isabella to the west and Beartooth Beck to the east, which provides the main pass through the western mountain range and joins up with the Dakota River further south.

but it does not fit with leaked map....I thought the Mt. Hagen is near the Adler ranch, or is it near Chez Porter?

@DuPz0r for map credits.

Given that it is quite obvious that the San Luis River flows west and so does the Lannahechee River as well; Does it make sense for such a big river that is modeled after the Mississippi River to flow into a such smaller river as the San Luis? I know that Lannahechee flows into Flatiron lake (a lake cannot have two outputs; only one). Would that make it possible for the San Luis to be so much smaller? would it need a dam to accomplish this as well? Didn't @BretMaverick777 say something about a dam in the past? What are you guys thoughts on this? Could this effect the map?

HtUDarl.jpg

It is not uncommon for rivers to flow into lakes, and those lakes then drain into a river without a dam. Lakes are just big, deep, open areas where more water can collect, while rivers generally carve their way through more narrow valleys and pathways. Even though the San Luis looks small compared to the Lannahechee, we don't really have any idea of how deep/ shallow the Lannahechee is, or how fast the water moves. If the San Luis is somewhat deep and carries the water fairly fast then it still makes sense I think in terms of realism for water flow.

Also, lakes can absolutely have 2 outflows.

@Pudgehodge yeah I had wondered if because of the lake this would make sense for the San Luis to be how it is.

It's definitely something to think about though.. I'm interested to see how turbulent and how much difference in water flow there will be between the different rivers (Dakota, Lannahechee, San Luis, Montanas, the bayou water channels, etc.). I hope they have some good variation in the way the water flows.

Something that comes to mind for comparison is the Fraser River (Canadian river comparison). The Fraser isn't particularly wide in most places, but it carries a hell of a lot of water. Here's the "Hell's Gate" part of the Fraser:

Hells-Gate-Fraser-River-CANYON-BC-Vintag

It has more than twice the amount of water flow of Niagara Falls:

nigagara-falls.jpg

I think the Fraser River is much deeper than Niagara, which can be a big part of the deception of how much water is actually flowing since we mostly just see the surface water. It'll be really interesting to see the San Luis "remastered". I'm also interested about how they will border off Mexico (assuming Nuevo Paraiso isn't playable, and also assuming most/ all of New Austin is playable).. We know there are boats, and we know Arthur can swim (somewhat). There were plenty of spots on the riverside where you could just walk in/ out of the river in Nuevo Paraiso, so what would be stopping us from paddling ashore? It's possible that there won't be any boats past Manteca Falls, and the river is pretty wide (could be wider and stronger that RDR in RDR2) so it's also possible Arthur can't swim across and will just drown. Or maybe they'll simply add some small cliffs/ steep embankments on the Nuevo shore to keep us out? Still so many questions!

Yeah, took a that look at the rivers earlier and was like “but the Mississippi flows into the gulf...”. Gotta remind myself that this is Rockstar’s world and they can do however they damn please lol.

A note on Mexico: if the lizard pic really does have NP in the background, I don’t think they would have teased us that way if it was not accessible. Also, we seem to have seen too much south of flatiron for that not to be accessible.

Excerpt from 3D Games (Spain) Preview (6 hours)
"In the snow zone (intro) you can cross a lake through the crystallized soil"
"St. Denis is very big, has the fog of the swamps, has tall buildings, Victorian houses. By the way, the journey from the camp (near Valentine) to St. Denis took a while, an employee of R * told me to open the map, zoomed back .. mother of God .. but if not I have traveled nothing! .. it's gigantic "
"The city of St. Denis is much bigger and livelier than I expected ... put a bomb in the market that was full of people"
"The map is covered in a fog of war ... The map has a strange shape, without wanting to venture, the filtered map was like a square where in the upper left they would have removed something ... although what I played if it reminded me of the map Filtered, even the location of New Bordeaux reminded me of the location of St. Denis. That is, this map may have been true four years ago and many things have changed. "
"Now I've seen the seams more graphically, it's still an amazing five-star videogame graphically, since the first time I saw it was in a small town (valentine) but now I've been in bigger cities and I've realized that the face of the modeled in gameplay now it is noted that it is a game of PS4 and Xbox one. Is that what I saw the first time (Valentine) seemed to me of science fiction ... Now I have seen more resources, for example the modeling of the characters in the cities (St. Denis) are very good but are not as exaggeratedly well as I thought ... For example in St. Denis that has more elements in motion, to mask the long drawn distances ... It has as a kind of pollution .. I do not know if this in other cities will be the same !. The truth, I do not know how R * will solve the biggest cities when the time comes to visit them "
"You ask me a lot about the map, but I have not seen enough, I get the feeling that it is gigantic. The biggest trip I made was from the small town (valentine ??) to the big city (St. Denis) and it was a great time, so I looked at the map and the journey I made was not much. Take your calculations because I can not tell you anything. I know that size matters to you, but it is that playing "only" six hours, I can not tell you much more either. "
"I wanted to rob a worker when he was going to the factories of St. Denis"
"Arthur nothing too bad, like a puppy, and does not know how to dive, also consumes very quickly the core of resistance, so do not expect to be able to cross a lake"

If I had to guess, it'd be Rio Bravo. It has the reight vegetation; bushes and sparse dead trees and a lot of dead grass.

If you look closely where I highlighted, you can see what looks like mesas from Diez Coronas in the distance as well as cliffs that are very prominent in the region. I severely doubt that those rocks are Courthouse or Jailhouse Rock given that this camera angle wouldn't be possible. Looking north, east or west from the Heartlands, the mountains should be much higher than what it has, and looking south, there should be a small hill at the most(definitely no cliff on the right).

Yeah, I ruled out "Twin Stacks" pretty quickly, if we were looking south or east towards "Twin Stacks" with Mexico in the distance, we would have to be in the Grizzlies. Somewhere on the mountains. Makes no sense. The mesas look closer to the Trailer one "Twin Stacks" than they do the ones in Gameplay Trailer 1 anyway, yet this is a much more recent shot.

I brought up the other shot, because the part I highlighted looks like similar terrain to the Mexico we see in that shot, and I'm not sure, but is that water and reflections I am highlighting here? It's hard to tell?

gq2ggs3

But if we were looking towards the desert we see east of WE and Blackwater, we should be able to spot the mesas in that other shot or perhaps this pano

g6meefe

But they seem like different backgrounds to me. Diez Coronas is a pretty good guess.

The fact that when they zoomed the map out fully and the distance from Valentine to St. Denis was relatively pretty small in the grand scheme of things makes me think there could be more to the map than what was leaked

Hard to tell, could just be a very sunny afternoon somewhere in the Heartlands.

Maybe, maybe not.  Looks like there's too much grass on the ground to be the desert.

Either way, large desert areas are 1000000% confirmed in-game, not sure why people have been getting so worked up over the desert. We know they're in the game, we know that New Austin and Mexico are back, yet people want to remain skeptical.  That's their right, I just think this "cautious pessimism" is a little silly and tired at this point.  Either way, all the speculation will be over in 8 days.

True. It's mainly because we don't know if the old map will be like North Yankton where we can only go during missions or if it's going to be accessible in free roam.

Which direction are we looking? I would guess Northeast with the clouds blocking our view of the Grizzlies.

The Snake River in Jackson Hole, WY (where RDR2's Grizzlies seem to have found a lot of inspiration) can get pretty narrow like the pic above, but the gorges it goes through can get extremely deep.  There's one place on the river, south of Jackson, where there's a dropoff in the riverbed that creates an "underwater waterfall" close to 100' deep.  So imagine the water in the pic above going nearly as deep as the rocks on the right edge of the photo.  That's some serious hydraulic flow.

Now I am convinced that there is a map to the west of the grizzlies and north of New Austin

why? Why are you convinced by something RDR unrelated?
Or am I missing something?

There have been a few pics which seem to literally be 1:1 mountain copy past to the Grizzlies, which I think is extremely awesome.

*Just drop the map damnit xD
