Mapping Red Dead Redemption 2! Landmark Analysis Thread

Not sure what they could possibly be referring to, then. GTA IV died pretty fast but RDR was kicking and kicking well for a good while.

I'm confident they know the numbers better than we do.  I guess they're probably talking about online population trends and/or sales well after the initial release.  Although I don't know how they can definitely attribute that to DLC "fracturing the player base."  I think GTA Online had a longer life than GTA IV and RDR because there was much more to it - right out of the gate it was a much more robust offering than either of those, and they updated it very frequently in the first year which got people hooked for the long haul.  They overhauled the model and I believe that had more to do with GTA V/GTA Online's "legs."  (Also, re-releasing for current gen consoles so soon after the last gen release probably put some wind in the game's sails, too. I know a lot of my friends re-bought it, even some people that had stopped playing already.)

Need to spell it out for me. Are they focussing on finalising RDRO or have they made RDRSP as a platform to primarily introduce Online like they did GTAV?

It means that instead of story DLC like Undead Nightmare, we're getting a remake of RDR but in RDR2's engine.

I just noticed something when watching the first gameplay video-- Hosea Matthews is talking to a group around the fire (around 2:25) and says he was "caught by some hill country sheriff.."

Hill Country is in Texas.  The RDR stand-in for Texas is New Austin.  Just another reference to the original map that I hadn't noticed.

I’ve been wanting the Texas hill country to be in game. It’s not in rdr, so there would have to be expanded territory for it.

That quote does not imply Texas though. There is the “Mississippi hill country” and other examples too.

Sure there are others, but when I think of Westerns and Hill Country, I think of Texas.

re: Map expansions and splitting up the userbase.

Rockstar have actually released a map expansion for one of their games before, Midnight Club LA. You could download it for free and drive around the new area in offline, or play online with friends who owned the premium version of the map.

They could easily flip that around for RDR2, have it available free to online players but have a premium story expansion for single player.

Ah yes, forgot about the south central DLC

I’m assuming he’s talking of Roanoke ridge. But Hope your right though lol.

Another location reference that I'd somehow missed, this obvious reference to the most photographed barn in the world.  Mormon Row, Jackson Hole, Wyoming:

Just more reinforcement that those peaks are modeled after the Tetons.

One guy on reddit claims his copy has been shipped today, says he will post the map tomorrow if he gets it.

Whoa, shipped from where? We're still very far from release, this seems super early.

The site in question has a 9-11 day shipping time. Here's a link to the thread.

If the 4chan leak/rumour is true, then that would seem to me to be the best evidence yet for Mexico actually being in RDR2.

Building a map is an absolutely colossal exercise, and it seems to me extremely unlikely that they would do it just for a DLC re-release of a game that 15m have already bought. Just can't see the financial maths working for that.

But - if they've already built the full RDR1 map for RDR2.....well, they've already also got all the story, audio and motion capture done. Would still need plenty of work, but they'd have many of the hardest parts ready to go. It's feasible.

How is this possible?

I thought Day One Patch works as an anti-piracy safety system, and a regular player is unable to run the game before release date.

Am I wrong?

If he plays it disconnected from the net once the game has been downloaded could this bypass having to install the patch?

Well, then you will have to register the game in your account in Rockstar Games Social Club when first time launching the game.

So you will need to have internet to perform this action (as was stated by R* Support, there was a post somewhere on this forum a day or two before, where a user contacted R* Support).

And how will you be able to register your game in your account before release date? (Unless you have a reviewer/developer kit)

Am I wrong again?

Chinese Takeout

Of the 10 Million people that will buy this game on or near launch day, some number LESS THAN 100% have access to an internet connection. IDK what the number of buyers without an Internet connection is, but even if it's half of 1 percent, that's still 5000 would-be paying customers, or ~$300,000. There's no way they, or any other publisher, would gate their product behind some kind of online-only registration process. What they WILL do, though, is make it very attractive for people to link their Social Club account, if they have one, and to sign up for a Social Club account if they don't have one.

Speaking of those Tetons...would you get a load of the really big...what would you call it? Valley? Yeah, get a load of that Big Valley between those peaks back there. You can see it on the other side of the big, Flat lake. That lake that has, like, some plains off to the side there. I wouldn't say those plains are PERFECT...but they're pretty Great Plains, nonetheless.

Here's a look from the other side. That's a pretty cool, and Big Valley down there. What is that at the bottom of it? Looks like, idk, a Little Creek of some kind. And back behind it you can see that Flat-looking lake again, and more plains, and like some wooded hills in the near background, but...way back there...there's some bigger hills that don't look like they have a lot of water...whatever you would call that kind of area. Looks sweeping, though. Neat.

Where'd you hear that, or is there documentation to support it? I'm curious as I hadn't read that.
