Aight! Thanks :)

It literally means that

A. The map is huge, if we talk about the same zoom as GTA, it will be about 2x the size of GTA. Absolutely huge O.o

B. It is somewhat of a square map or 18x14 something like that. Since they probably played on a 16x9 screen.

C. Did I say the map is absolutely huge xD

Yeah, the "we zoomed all the way out" wasn't mentioned before and threw me. Lol Like, damn how big is this thing?! And I've seen the leaked map. lol

I can't remember how far it zoomed out for RDR though and if thats any indication either.

In RDR you can zoom out so you can see the entire map, with two thick black lines on the sides.

If we take this as indication...

Only the width will be 3/4x the size of RDR1. Lenght 3/4x that as well

We are talking absolutely massive here. And another reason I think the map is scaled in comparison to its predeccesor.

The scale to me looks 2x, so the rdr1 map would be four times as big (twice in width, twice in lenght)

To me this could explain the map Edge saw.

*zoomed out the rdr1 map just can't fit on one screen

**GTA V uses the same zoom. We can see half the map zoomed out, which is about the size of rdr1+2/3rd, including water

The moment I saw leaked map I thought 'Oh, it's small, I want big map, bigger than this, I want to disappear in this world'. But after playing Ac Odyssey, well, I'm very much okay even if we end up with only that leaked map. Odyssey has gigantic but copy-paste map and locations and it's super boring to travel from one objective to another. Now I tend to think small and dense is better than huge and empty

True. However it looks like we get the best of both. A dense and populated map, and it is huge!

I have the Edge issue myself! This is the quote:

"We bring up the map, zoom out as far as we can, and move the cursor east. It scrolls for two full screens.

"Go south", a voice behind us says.

It scrolls twice as far."

That's a pretty good find.

I'll be honest i'm completely stumped. Previously i though it was just the redemption 1 map and the leaked map, but these quotes say its way more so I honestly have no idea what the end map could look like.

It does sound huge. Maybe too much.

Where was arthur at the time? Intro section?
Because if the map scrolled for two screen to the east, it might just be a small max dezoom..? (and keep in mind HD format is wide, so it will scroll more vertically than horizontally for a square)
Of course we don't know for sure about the east of the map, but I don't really see anything new on the other side of the river.
Or they "lied" about the 5 states, which would be really weird?

Too huge I wouldn't say, GTA V is actually not that big in the current generation of console cycles.

During the 360 era, it was one of the larger maps ever made. Currently it isn't, be far.

Larger maps:

- The Crew 1 and 2

- Just Cause 2 and 3

Larger maps, same freeroam options:

- Watch Dogs 2

- Assassin's Creed Origins/Odyssey

- Ghost Recon WL

Denser maps same size or larger:

- TheHunter Call of the Wild

- Breath of the Wild (Zelda)

GTA V has been surpassed (luckily) in the past 5 years by the standard it created. And just as its predeccesor, RDR2 will set a new standard, just as GTA did.

Maybe you just can not zoom out any further 😅

Could be, but the zoom is the same in RDR1, GTA IV and GTA V...

Here is another quote from the Edge article that suggests that the game world is going to be huge...

“from what we’ve seen this will be, by a long way, the biggest, most varied, and most beautiful playground the developer has ever produced.”

At this point I have very little doubt that we're all going to be jaws to the floor blown away when:

The game comes out and we see the map
OR
The map is leaked before hand lol (More likely)

It will be Rockstar's biggest 'reveal' to date because they've kept so much hidden on purpose.

The first thing I might do after completing all that intro stuff is just ride out west and see how far I can go... and then maybe right out south and see how far I can go.

After intro, I definetely will take my horse and going to south, to find St. Denis, then to west....then back to camp :-) With help of my compass and paper map (hope there will be in standard box). Or maybe it would be better to learn some hunting basics before this long long journey:-)

Do be gentlemen and let us know when the map comes out. With work and other things I may not be able to read every last post, as interesting as I'm sure they are.

The comment about the map and the size of it is crazy, more so because of the actual comments. They accessed the map screen while they were near Valentine and zoomed all the way out. Then they moved it East as far as it would go and was the breadth of 2 screens. A Rockstar rep told them to then try going South and the distance was even further.

Just so you know, they are going to tell you whatever they need to tell you to get you to preorder the most expensive version. The game may not come with a map without buying a more expensive edition, but that is impossible for a GameStop employee to know at the moment because they don't have the game. We'll see when the game comes out. I went straight for the Ultimate myself because I wanted the map it includes, as well as all of the bonus DLC stuff (played the hell out of RDR1 online and GTAO, so I'm excited for RDO as well). But yeah, they wouldn't actually know one way or another.

Oh, for sure!

I am not that naive :D I actually didn't even buy the game via gamestop, but the R* warehouse - I just wrote this, as the guy I asked, is usually pretty upfront, and has been very honest with me before, even to the point of hurting a sale :)

If this is the case, the leaked mapmust only be a small portion of the actual map!

I just really wanna see atleast an outline of the map, as we did with GTAV from the trophy leaks.

Don't need to see the actual map, just a shadowy outline to get a feel for the shape and size. Have a feeling we won't see sh*t untill release!

In Red Dead Redemption 1 in 'fully zoomed-out' mode you can see the full map.

From this '2 screens east and 4 screens south' news I reckon it just doesn't zoom out as far as in Red Dead Redemption 1... or something like this...

P.S. Or maybe it doesn't zoom out far only in the press-demo build.

P.P.S. ...But! I actually do hope that the map is really big. Roughly like this:

  • Horizontally RDR1 Map is the first screen, RDR2 map is the second screen.
  • Vertically RDR1 Map takes up two screens and RDR2 map takes up two screens.

Lets not go too deep on just this one line. We can only guess how much appears when fully zoomed out.  You can zoom out a lot in Far Cry 4's map which also has plenty of clouds at the start and seems bigger, but the playable area gets a certain shape eventually and you can't go elsewhere. It will be like so with RDR 2 i believe.

The shape and edges of each state, they may have grown bigger from the leaked map, but it won't be by much. It's still going to be massive if New Austin and Nuevo Paraiso come into play, and pretty big even if they're Online only.

For sure, but I doubt it will be bigger than GTAVs' map - It will seem bigger because of no cars and such, but not in actual size.

However I believe it will be much more "alive"/Detailed and won't feel empty.

Totally agree. However if a new state or territory was revealed that would certainly ramp things up regarding map size. Just how watertight is the idea of 5 states ? Yes they are listed together on the train collectible caption. Yes we haven't seen visual evidence of other states directly but does "There are 5 states" 100% mean "There are only 5 states" ? I had thought the latter but a huge map is hard to reconcile with 5 states. I just wonder if there is a 6th state across the river from Annesburg, especially as in some of the screenshots the landscape looks overly detailed for just an inaccessible backdrop.

Don't forget that Mexico isn't a state, and most importantly - in 1899 there were 45 states, Utah becoming a state in 1896. So there were territories that were not classified as 'states'...

  • Oklahoma - became a state in 1907
  • New Mexico - became a state in 1912
  • Arizona - became a state in 1912

So if there in fact is something north of New Austin in RDR2, than it would be Oklahoma - not a state in 1899.

P.S.

I might be wrong.

So I just went and read that Hennigan's Stead was supposed to resemble Oklahoma in RDR1. And if this is true, than Hennigan's Stead is not going to be a state in RDR2.

Good points. Do you think we will be able to cross the Lannahechee River ?

One thing worth noting that New Austin is never referred to as a state in RDR1.  On the train during the opening mission, two passengers talk about a governor.  It isn't clear whether that governor is from New Austin or West Elizabeth, but from the context, it is reasonable to assume it is West Elizabeth, even though we are in New Austin when the discussion takes place.  It may be that people from West Elizabeth simply view New Austin as their own backyard, even if it is federal land.

This further would be a reason for the involvement of federal agents in RDR1 as well as Marston and his gang's longing for going there.

And if New Austin is not a state in RDR1, then it surely isn't in RDR2.

I think that this river is the best natural map border R* could make in RDR2. They wouldn't need to put some mountains across the river just to tell us again that this is the end of the map.

Other than that, I don't think there will be playable areas east of the river.

Marshal Johnson refers to New Austin as a state in Justice in Pike's Basin. Personally, I think New Austin is more like a territory than a state but people refer to it as state because its status seems very confused.

The wiki seems to only refer to it as a territory, for what it's worth.

Right, so we know Rockstar named a few things in RDR universe, mostly horses or outfits by in-game animals, locations and so on. We know there's also a Nuevo Paraiso Gunslinger outfit coming in RDR 2 as a pre-order bonus(which some have taken as a hint towards Mexico returning), and there's the Copperhead(landing) Enforcer Outfit(a location in RDR 2 map near the prison)

Now look at the rest of the RDR 2 Ultimate edition of the game text:

gvDHBbK.png

"High Plains". Sounds like a location no?

XEkhIXl.jpg

Could it be?

Et3fJTS.png

High Plains, Tall Trees, Great Plains. High Plains would be a new part of New Austin in this case.
