Mapping Red Dead Redemption 2! Landmark Analysis Thread

I'm conflicted. On one hand I'm a mapper & want to know for sure if the map matches my expectations. On the other hand I'm a gamer & like to be surprised & delighted. I think I will give it a few more days before I go dark. :D

7 days before launch is my cut-off, so one week from today at midnight and it's Happy Trails. 👍

I think I won't be back if/when the map comes out. Once in free roam, my plan is to go and see if I can find my way to West Elizabeth, and hopefully to NA. Once in WE my muscle memory will probably take over lol. Once I've checked them, I'll just ride around and try my best to get rid of the fog. I wonder if we can still buy maps, hopefully using them will remove chunks of the fog at a time.

Also, any theories on what the in-game map will be? In RDR1 the map was a paper map of the border to which (I personally believe) John slowly added the location names as he reached them. But since the map is covered in fog, that's not going to work this time. Who'd buy a map that's covered in darkness? My guess is that the map is a blank paper until Arthur reaches each location and "draws" them in. It'll be presented as Arthur creating and adding to the self-made map as he uncovers the fog. That or it's like in GTA, and has no explanation whatsoever.

I'm here for the long run. Map 'til the end! I'll just have to avoid the minefield.

Same here brother. We have been here for two years. We'll sit it out this our last breaths.

Are you still planning to do that neat project of recreating the full official map in your style and making it interactable?

What we have not heard is 'East Grizzlies', maybe the two regions of The Grizzlies are further split into 'West Grizzlies' and 'East Grizzlies' (what we now call 'The Grizzlies (intro)' and 'The Grizzlies', respectively).

^Totally expected. "The Grizzlies" and "The Grizzlies (Intro)" don't sound as final names for regions, do they?

I think one of the two may have a different name.  Mount Hagen is in Grizzlies, Ambarino so I'm assuming there is no West/East Grizzlies specifically, rather this is just a way to distinguish the two separate mountain ranges.  If both areas are the Grizzlies, that means there's only one region in Ambarino... not saying that can't happen or that Ambarino doesn't extend beyond the playable map borders, but I can see them changing it.  If not, it's be the biggest area in the game (would make sense if it's all mountains).

I'm conflicted myself... I initially said 10 days, and I've been abstaining from watching the trailers in hopes that they would get me through those 10 days, but I don't know if I can pull it off and stay away.

Do you think guys, there will be a paper map in the box (standard edition)? I am going to try play without HUD minimap, It will be hard, very hard, but paper map could be great help....in reality, they had paper maps, compass....no doubt. In that case, I think, spoiled map will be not any problem....

Yes. It's a standard for Rockstar games to include a map.

I believe the standard edition does include a map, as did Red Dead Redemption 1.

I'm somewhat disappointed that there's so few trophies. Red Dead Redemption 1 easily had 4x as many trophies, it had more miscellaneous stuff such as knocking people out in bars, roping a woman and placing her on the railroad tracks, completing all gang hideouts, etc. Unless that leaked list isn't full.

There's also only one mention of the map itself in the trophies list. Nothing related to discovering all landmarks, exploring all regions, and so on.

RDR had 49 trophies at launch. It only has more now currently because it counts DLC trophies (from all the DLC packs for multiplayer and Undead Nightmare). Otherwise I agree and wish there were more fun/misc trophies.

Yea I'll probably try to do the same.  It would be cool if we had the option to just have a compass in the corner.

True, but I agree that Trophies/Achievements in a lot of games aren't very creative or fun. Especially in Rockstar open worlds, some fun, random and crazy Achievements/Trophies would be great!

But isn't the point that since this map by so many accounts is either as big or bigger than GTA V, then there simply HAS to be more playable space than either the leaked map or the documentation provided by Rockstar has shown us so far?

If it is going to be bigger than the GTA V map, it needs to be alot more we have not seen, or they have to upscale the leaked map plus old maps heavily.

Only the Special &Ultimate mention anything about the map...

If you pre-ordered the digital edition before August 15 you could get a Treasure map. But only the Special & Ultimate physical editions include the "Exclusive World Map".

My local gamestop told me, that the standard edition does indeed NOT include a map.

One of the reasons I upgraded to Ultimate.

The 'Zoologist' trophy has me seriously doubting Mexico is returning.

Why would they use a word like states if it was?

Anyone under the impression they are being intentionally coy with that description just to throw off the scent of a handful of people on a forum have lost their damn minds.

So I will have to print out some leaked map, it is nonsence to move around the wild west without any paper map and HUD 🙂 I think there will be some map in standard edition but in ultimate will be original, nice map high quality made as we know it (rolled in one)

Agreed, soured me a bit on Rockstar when they told me this, plus the insane price on the ultimate edition..

Never thought R* would go down that path - But who are we kidding, we will still buy their games :D

You sure you weren't just talking to a goof employee who was only talking about the special and ultimate edition map?

When did you hear this? and did the person say they actually opened the game case or how did they know?

They just know what we know. And they know that the special editions come with a map, that the standard editions do not. That's all ie the standard edition does not have the map the special editions do. That doesn't strictly mean there is no physical map at all with the standard edition.

That still may turn out to be true, but the lack of answers does not mean it's definitive.

I agree. Like for GTA V. the Special edition had the blueprintmap, but there was also the normal map

Well like always, the person could be wrong - He was the local store manager, and he checked his cute little screen to see what the game includes - Usually it says if there is a map or not. He told me it said, not.  (I asked him specifically if there would be a physical map in the standard edition)

Doesn't matter to me personally now tho, I ordered the ultimate edition.

Exactly. Back in the day, Rockstar did Asked & Answered, and this was cleared up. Sadly, they don't seem to do this anymore :(

“Hello, I noticed that the Special Edition of GTA V includes a large "blueprint" of the map. I was wondering if the Standard Edition of GTA V will include the traditional folded paper map that, as far as I can recall, has always been included with GTA games.”  received via Mouthoff
"Will a GTA V poster be included when the game is purchased?”  @ny718kid

As in all previous Grand Theft Auto games, we’ve made a point of including a map of the world to aid players in navigating the city. In all versions of GTAV, the game disc will accompany a map with all the details players will need to navigate the world.  One big change though with this game is that with a world of this size, we created a double-sided map based poster to make sure players have all the information they might need to discover and explore the world. The blueprint map in the other editions does contain plenty of additional information and secrets on it.

IDK, here's what I think it is...

  Reveal hidden contents

1. Boot up game

2. Prompt to link Social Club account

3. Oh, look, you played Red Dead Redemption in the past at some point, and beat it

4. <<Achievement Unlocked!>>

Some more progress, but man...I can't deal with the stress! I'm racing to finish as much detail as possible, and it's like Damocles Sword is dangling above me. Map leak is gonna drop any minute, seems like. Oh well, it was a fun ride. I might be able to adjust my train tracks and add in the "sweeping deserts" south of the Lannahechee before it hits.
