Mapping Red Dead Redemption 2! Landmark Analysis Thread

We had a huge discussion about this some pages back. We're all in agreement that it is the Eastern part of the map looking down over Balsam Rise, towards the south.

We've also dicussed the possibility of more landmass being added since the leaked map. as The Lannahechee river seem thinner and the broad space between that coastline and the Roanoke River seems to have grown substantially.

Either that or the map is truly massive and we've miss-judged the scale this entire time. And honestly i think a lot of us have to some extent. I think in our minds the map is half the scale it will actually be. R*'s camera tricks make everything seem closer than it is.

It really does look huge, theres so much variation in the terrain here, and it doesn't look exaggerated and it all transitions so nicely. Mountains, valleys, forests and plains.

I can not wait to explore this world.

They didn't create North Yankton just for that sake. It was also to test out making a snowy area to then use again in future, like in Red Dead Redemption 2 for example. I can't prove this, but I'm very sure about it. They introduce snow in GTA and low and behold snow is a large feature of the following game. That's not a coincidence. Rockstar, like any good developer, are always thinking a few steps ahead.

Snow was in Red Dead Redemption. And technically San Andreas, for that one mission, where you return to San Andreas, but that hardly counts.

Maybe wasted ressources. I honestly can not see me roaming the old well known map this often, when I am able to experience a complete new part.

I assume that R* has altered the old map in many ways, IF it is really fully in RDR2...

Well, that's kind of at the crux of this debate isn't it? I mean, I'm like several others here who've voiced their opinion that I'm largely ambivalent about the rote size of the map, because the gameplay and map we've seen thus far is SO in-depth and immersive that the depth of the game should more than make up for any criticisms over the mere geographical spread of the map. I've never understood the obsession with map size, frankly. It's like the older guy who buys a Corvette, ya know?

Anyhow, insofar as playing a map that we've played before, I've no fear here. R* has remastered it and I'm sure it'll be visually stunning. Whether they upscale it at all I don't care, but for me, I'm kind of excited to go  back and see it and experience it again. I'm replaying RDR1 now and it's kind of surprising how many places I *didn't* spend a lot of time in, even after hours upon hours.

So we all have our own preferences, certainly, but I'm all for roaming.

You're right, they will need a constant stream of content to lure people to RDRO, and keep them there, so they can maximize their revenue, and I could see them *possibly* releasing a map that is exclusive to online players, but if you're suggesting that they would charge for that map, I disagree with you. Most Triple-A developers stopped charging for map expansions halfway through this gen because they learned it fractures their userbase, and then has a negative impact on their revenue. This was expressly why EA didnt charge for any of the Battlefront 2 expansions (of course, they were expecting to shift their revenue to Loot Box microtransactions, and we all know how that turned out, haha).

So, yeah R* will need to have mucho sources of revenue extenders for RDRO, but there's no way an exclusive map for sale will be part of it. If they have any map expansions, they will be free.

Also if they go the same route as GTAO they will need to keep adding expensive content for players to spend their money on. For GTA the content is new cars, planes, helicopters, and properties. Adding a map would definitely keep a strong playerbase but I don't see how they will cash in.

I am also skeptical about additional online DLC maps.

Rockstar obviously puts an insane amount of effort into making its maps the most detailed and immersive around. The GTAV map was the result of a huge art direction team working for four years; I imagine that RDR2 was a bigger team working even longer.

The number of person-hours they would have to put into a DLC map - even one that was, say, only 20% the size of a full map - is absolutely colossal. Far, far outweighs - by, like, several orders of magnitude - adding content to an existing map (e.g. new missions, activities, vehicles, clothes or weapons) And so unless they did charge for it - and a significant amount at that - you have to believe that from a business perspective, it's going to be more cost effective to have those art designers working on the next game instead (be it GTAVI or Bully 2 or something else......). After all, GTAO has been making Rockstar about $100m a month in recurring revenue. GTAV made them $1b in sales revenue in its first three days.

Maybe just wishful thinking - as someone who plays SP only, I honestly don't really care that I miss out on new weapons and vehicles etc. that appear online. There's always more than enough content in a base Rockstar game to make me feel I got my money's worth. But if they started adding new maps to online, then I would feel like I was missing out in a big way.  So I hope the day that Rockstar does that is as far away as possible.......

So......getting into delicate territory here.......

I'm one of those that is quite happy - keen in fact - to know as much about the map as possible pre-release. I find it helps to build excitement, learning about the world we're about to get to play in, discussing it with you guys and watching your amazing work as you piece the world together. But I really don't want any major story spoilers, and frankly would rather know as little as possible about even the side missions/strangers/random events. I want to discover those for myself.

So I mostly hang out on this thread - definitely don't go near the Armadillo Inn, and looks like I may have to avoid the General Discussion thread from now on as the spoilers are multiplying.......

But for anyone that does like to read any and all spoilers, and has therefore looked through the leaked trophies list - does it provide any clues as to the map at all that you can share? Particularly the big Mexico question??

It doesn't. Other than

Spoiler

"Survive with at least a 250 bounty on your head in all states for 3 days"

I couldn't really discern anything useful, but I didn't look at the story spoilers

Sounds like one of the trophies reveals something about the map, but I don't want to read the hidden trophies so I'm not sure.

@Tonesta You took the words right out of my mouth. Verbatim. As far as RDRO...I really don't think they will strive for the RDR version of GTAO. I think R* are smart enough to know who the target markets are for each of their IPs. For GTAO, flying DeLoreans and monster trucks and fireworks launchers make perfect sense. Dont look for that kind of development of RDRO, just because it's also a R* game. I think the kind of people who are likely to stick with RDRO after the SP story is over are people who want to continue the fantasy of living in the Old West. To outfit that fantasy, I can imagine the option to eventually purchase a fully functioning cattle ranch, or to recruit people into your own notorious gang, or to form a group of U.S. Marshalls to patrol the land, bringing those gangs to justice.

And I cant imagine them ever exhausting the bottomless limits of the weapons, wagons, tools, clothes, buildings, animals, etc...that they can tempt us with to hand over our hard earned money.

The only thing that will be really weird is, for example, in GTAO you spend $100 on a Shark Card & you get in-game $8,000,000...in RDRO it'll be something like, buy a $100 Buffalo Bond & you get in-game $25.00, or something like that, haha

I read the trophy leaks and there is only a mention of there being "states" in the game, which is confirmed. So nothing to help with mapping. DON'T read those titles, though, guys. They DO have some BIG spoilers if you know the context.

If the trophy list has leaked that means somebody is currently playing the game, right?

So map leaks should be imminent af

The guy who leaked the trophies is a known trophy leaker who never leaks pictures/videos of the game. Of course, someone else could be playing it tomorrow, or the next day... so yeah the map leaks are imminent, as you say.

He says in his post that he won't be leaking in-game content. That hasn't stopped people from asking him for the map though😛

Most likely it’s not what you might think it is.

Spoiler

Unlike other trophies saying Complete Chapter # or Complete Epilogue, this one says Complete ‘Red Dead Redemption’ with quotation marks, like all trophies tied to the missions. So ‘Red Dead Redemption’ might be just a mission name.

Well I'm telling you now, if that IS what it sounds like, I will flip the f*ck out. I don't think it's likely but you better just avoid me if it ends up being true, because my head will spin around like that little girl in The Exorcist and my penis will be going off more often than Old Faithful.

IDK, here's what I think it is...

Spoiler

1. Boot up game

2. Prompt to link Social Club account

3. Oh, look, you played Red Dead Redemption in the past at some point, and beat it

4. <<Achievement Unlocked!>>

Some more progress, but man...I can't deal with the stress! I'm racing to finish as much detail as possible, and it's like Damocles Sword is dangling above me. Map leak is gonna drop any minute, seems like. Oh well, it was a fun ride. I might be able to adjust my train tracks and add in the "sweeping deserts" south of the Lannahechee before it hits.

I literally signed up just to make this point.

There are two things in the leaked trophies that I noticed.

1) There is a trophy: "Endless Summer" - complete the epilogue.

2) There is a trophy: "Redemption" - Complete red dead redemption

Now maybe I'm an idiot... BUT... usually once you've completed an epilogue, you've completed a game. Why have two trophies for the same thing... unless..

I redact... other mission names are in quotations. Probably just a mission name

I think people here don't want to know things about achievements, safer to use spoilers.

now...

Spoiler

"endless summer", that's a Bully reference right?
I didn't play the game, but I looked for the chapters list like two days ago ahah
(also, seasons confirmed?)
