To the best of my knowledge, the GTA V map was leaked on the 10th September, exactly a week before release. So possibly, two more weeks before we see it leaked, worst case 3 😉

IIRC R* presented the map (in parts) prior to release for RDR on the RDR website?

Yeah, but parts of the blueprint came earlier and it really helped to build almost the whole map. But with rdr2 we have nothing except old leaked map which is more like to be very outdated

Has there been comparisions with this map and that of Assassin's Creed Origins? I know that Origins has much less variation in biomes and that about half of it is just empty desert, but I just launched Origins for the first time in 6 months and forgot how big the map is.

No since we absolutely have no idea what the distances are. It seems like they upped the scale significantly, but even about that we aren't sure.

R* does a hell of a good job keeping the map a secret. It feels like it is easier to get your hands on money in fort Knox than to get leaked info from R*

I wonder when the Achievements/Trophies will leak? IIRC, some of the GTA5 Achievements were map related and comfirmed/disconfirmed certain areas.

Not really, the only map related achievement was http://www.trueachievements.com/a179395/san-andreas-sightseer-achievement?gamerid=295660

That gave us the shape of the map, but I remember that it was so low res, that it was difficult to map the exact shape. We just knew it matched up perfectly with the blueprint map. And fit very well with what people had mapped based on screenshots and trailers.

They said "forests of Ambarino" does that mean Cumberland forest?

I've been wondering about this too. There are plenty trees/forests on/between the Grizzlies, but with Cumberland being so close and all...

Roanoke Ridge is confirmed to be New Hanover via Annesburg writeup, so Cumberland Forest would have to be NH as well.

I don't know what the confusion was with the Dakota bridge. It's not a causeway, it's a bridge, this is the bridge.

This should clear things up for everyone

Guys, it was fun lurkin around in this thread and seeing you build this map out of those little hints. Great work, specially @DuPz0r and @Chinese Takeout. I'm going on vacation (in San Andreas) and I'll be back home a few days before the game arrives. So, Gentleman, see you in the GTA VI mapping thread.

Take care and have fun with RDR2, even if there should be no New Austin or Nuevo Paraiso ;)

So let’s flash back (or forward rather) to RDR. If you’ll recall, Bonnie talked about the railroaded being built in New Austin and how it changed everything. The way she talks about it implies it happened within the last few years. This makes me think that in this game New Austin will be locked off until the railroad gets built to it from Western Elizabeth, especially with the comments from Rockstar about railroads being built as the story progresses

I hope we get to meet NA without railroad before it gets built.

R* also said that after the prologue the whole map is open to explore

Makes sense to me.

And if Cornwall is the robber baron building the rails west, there's probably story fodder there for choosing Armadillo over Tumbleweed for a rail junction, as well as running the rails out to Plainview Oil and, eventually, Mexico.

That is if Trains are the only way to transport between places, you could easily travel to New Austin on a boat.My prediction is that while the railroad tracks to New Austin will be built as you progress in the game you are free to go there if you want to(maybe you can only fast travel there after the railroad gets built)

According to the latest gameplay trailer there are gangs in New Austin(mexican gang) so i don't get why NA would be blocked off.

Exactly. This is what I've been saying since that image came out. Everything lines up. The only thing that threw me off was @Chinese Takeout's analysis, comparing the view of Pyramid from Bacchus Bridge and it seemed to look the same even though it's from a different angle.. but I looked at it more closely and I think there's enough difference to say that it's a different angle, and enough similarities to say it's definitely the same mountain:

bpMoDGr.png

After all, both the Bacchus angle and the Dakota crossing angle are viewing Pyramid mountain from the east. Bachhus is from more north-east while Dakota crossing is slightly south-east.

WdDr6uQ.png

(My angle might be slightly off but the location and approximate angle looks close enough). I think the big bridge is definitely at Dakota crossing, but I also think there's still a chance that some sort of old causeway could be there as well. The bridge is likely relatively new for the time, and they may have had an older crossing that people used before the big bridge (for crossing with carriages and things like that). One of the main reasons I think this is possible is this image:

qm52ivU.png

There looks to be something under the bridge, and to me it doesn't look like the bridges under structure. The shape doesn't match the under structure given the angle and distance of this perspective. Of course you can also see land on the right side of the crossing under the bridge as it stretches out onto the lake and narrows, and eventually looks to turn into a thin strip of something crossing the span. An old causeway could definitely be one explanation. (there's also that big patch of dark on the lake above/ to the left of the bridge.. which I still think could be some anchored log rafts, but that's a topic for a different discussion)

You got a point.  Plus, there was at least one ford between NA and Great Plains, so a swimming horse, a swimming Arthur, and anybody with a boat have far more options in RDR2.

Regarding railway, New Austin and the whole world being available initially to explore.  Rockstar has explicitly said that railways will be further built as the game progresses, that presumably means along with the main story.  So if you don't attend to the story for a while, nothing major happens to the map.  So while the whole world is initially available, the lack of railway will make certain parts hard to get to, or at least time consuming.  Effectively, Rockstar is saying, yeah, you can explore it all, but it's gonna take you a long ass time, unless you stick to the plot.

Plus, if there is quick travel as in RDR, it will remain restricted to locations you've been before.  So no fast sneaking into New Austin.  I would not be surprised if the distance - in real time, not game time - from the first moment you are free to roam till you reach New Austin (and yes, I mean just Thieves' Landing) will be several hours.  Indeed, because planning your route might be difficult, since - as far as I know - they do insert a fog over unexplored territory on the map (this has been confirmed, right?).  Of course, you can probably use the print out map, but yeah, still take a bit longer than just nailed a waypoint on the map and get going.  Besides, will you choose the fastest route?

Of course, even in a world where you know the route from that moment to Thieves' Landing, I am still betting on several hours.  Real time.

I'll guess 15 to 20 mins tops as the crow flys

Nice but how do you know Cumberland isn't part of New Hannover? Is it stated somewhere in the previews?

I don't. The borders are still speculative at this time.

Plausible, but you won't be a crow.  You'll be on horseback.

Yep, Cumberland Forests are the only area from the leaked map which we don't have any confirmation region wise who they belong to, Ambarino or New Hanover. And it's pretty much the only region without any major towns or settlements too as it seems now.

Side thought, lots of previews mention "fog" covering the whole map at the start. What if the gray/black overlay out of the map boundary lines is that fog?

You should absolutely make a replicated map, once the game is out, in this/your art style. I really like it! 👍

Thanks, i plan to. I'm in talks with a programmer about making an interactive map app with pickups, hidden items, etc. Which you can log in and save progress. Should be fun.
