Once someone gets their hands on the guide I expect it to be released.  Rockstar intentionally coy about the map.  Doubt they would ever release it.

Doubt it. I remember V’s map leaking a week before release so it will probably be the same for Rdr 2.

I translated what the previewer told me:

 

'Even if I was allowed to say it, I didn't get the time or the option to check it, since I was only allowed to play a fraction of the game'.

 

They even had madatory breaks (to go to the toilet etc.)

Yeah - Rockstar won't release the map themselves before the 26th.

And I'm pretty sure that all the magazines and games stores will also respect Rockstar's wishes and won't leak it themselves. They don't want to annoy the maker and distributor of the world's biggest games.

 

But once the Strategy Guide (which is also due to release on the 26th) goes out to bookshops.....well, those guys won't care so much about their relationship with Rockstar as it's such a tiny part of their business, and won't worry about leaks. So some fan in a bookshop backroom somewhere will scan a copy of the map in the guide and it'll appear all over the place.

 

In 2013, I believe the GTA V map leaked that way on September 10th - which was exactly a week before release.

I explored that idea around the end of August...I'm not gonna go digging for the post, but here's what I posted about it...I basically said:

 

1. There's no road going straight back from Arthur, but there is a road that - at least for a bit - runs parallel with the train tracks

2. The road he's on crosses over the railroad tracks

 

 

With that info, I went hunting...and the only place on the map I could find like that was - as you say - near Valentine:

 

However...Where the heck is The Knob? Here's Arthur looking down on that EXACT SPOT (if that's the spot)...

Here's the reverse angle - there's the train station in the shadow below The Knob:

 

So...IDK...It's the only place on the Leaked Map that makes sense...but it still doesn't feel right.

I know I'll want to click and look. After all the rampant speculation, it'll be great to have those big questions answered.

 

And then a week of studying the details of the map will be a fun way to lead up to release.........

I haven't read the new previews but my guess is the Blackwater heist that starts the game involves a boat, yet we've seen a lot of shots of Blackwater, and a few from cutscenes, including one of Arthur tacking some guy. Why model all of Blackwater for one mission that potentially could take place on the lake or the river? We've scene potential shots of Tall Trees too, though I'm not sure about those.

I thought I read that Arthur wasn't involved/present with the Blackwater botched robbery - didn't he get updated as they were traveling up the mountain?  So I am thinking that Arthur would be fine traveling back that way.

At this point, it's probably the best idea. Not saying we should stop looking/analysing. But having final maps before leaks make that impossible is a cool idea.

In my head the entire map is only about two acres and every point can be seen from a single location, so I can't wait to see the actual map

OK, I think I've narrowed down the Arthur & Jimmy scene & the towering rocks...

 

 

The red line is the view looking at the tall metal train bridge. We're seeing the west end of it & the East side where it goes in the Heartlands is cutting it off before you see the East end of the bridge.

 

Point 1 is where Arthur & Jimmy are located.

 

Point 2 is where the towering rocks are at. We can't really see them in the wide angle shot of Horseshoe bend because of the distance & the shadow.

 

Point 3 where Arthur is riding his horse along the cliff edge where you see the towering rocks. If you look at those rocks there's a little bit of rotation due to Arthur on his horse being a little bit west where he was with Jimmy.

 

Also you can see one of the mountains from the Grizzlies right behind Jimmy. I don't believe it's Hagen.

I believe KNOB is not on the leaked map, but you can see it on the Horseshoe bend pano. Along with railroad track. You can also see Valentine & the livestock auction barns just to the left too. Noticed all that after staring at it trying to find the towering rocks.

Where the heck is he looking that he sees ridglines that high up in the sky? I feel like he's looking Southwest over either Roanoke Ridge, The Heartlands, or Scarlett Meadows, but idk...I can't get it to click in my mind. Also...WTF IS UP WITH THAT RIDGELINE?! haha. If it's the ridges from the "Sweeping Deserts" of Nuevo Paraiso...they seem a lot higher and closer in this shot than they should be. ????

I think R* are using some really extreme zoom and FOV to make the far ranges across the river appear way closer than they are in game.

I think you could be right on this. I always assumed that the Jimmy Brooks/ towering rocks view was taken from the characters standing across the Dakota river, from somewhere near Cumberland Falls (north side of the Dakota River).. and I thought the towering Rocks were at the bend just south east of Downes Ranch.. but some things weren't lining up when looking at it from that perspective. I was looking for other spots it could be, and the location(s) you've pointed out were the same as I was thinking. 

 

Mainly with the Jimmy Brooks image and the fact that you can see that bridge (also the angle of the river, and the position of what looks to be painted sky on the right side of the image). I think you nailed that Brooks spot. You can see the spot in the trailer 2 view: (my location might be slightly off, but I think it's somewhere in the area)

There are still a few things that don't seem to match up perfectly, but IMO both images (Brooks image and Arthur pano image) match up better than if it were up near Cumberland Falls.

 

The bridge location, the raised cliffs on the right side of the river (Painted Sky), the position and angle of the towering rocks, and the mountain in the background on the right in the pano image (Pyramid mountain?). Also the scene of Jimmy hanging from the cliff, the area below the cliff matches up pretty well with what that area looks like (a rocky slope going down from the cliffs, with a clearing type area at the bottom of the cliffs with a road/ trail at the bottom).

There is only 1 line of sight that threads the needle from the bridge through the bend in the Dakota. You can not see the train bridge anywhere farther upstream the Dakota from my spot. It's impossible, I've tried. You would have cross over the Painted Sky penisula & it's too high. Anyway, that's how I derived my position, worked from the bridge & went up the river.

Yeah, no rails there.   That's just a trail with a footbridge --- maybe a hanging bridge, as some say -- across that narrow canyon in the riverbend at the Downes Ranch mesa.
