Mapping Red Dead Redemption 2! Landmark Analysis Thread

Another thought:

If could be that the text doesn't mention Nuevo Paraiso because the railroad doesn't go there in 1899, and it only mentions regions where it does go through or get constructed at the time.

If Ambarino is indeed where we think of, and the railroads extends to the south of bayou/scarlet meadows, maybe the railroad only goes a bit into Mexico and at some point it goes back, and to go from Ambarino to Nuevo Paraiso region, you'd have to go on foot via 40*C+ desert/mountains separating the two regions. Maybe in the end game when the gang splits, most end up in NA but Arthur goes down to Mexico. (And in a potential DLC, maybe we see him support the construction of the railroad with New Austin)

It's all not clear, but one of the many possibilities.

Don't be so quick to assume Nuevo Parasio not showing up. A reason why it may not mention Nuevo Paraiso is that no railways are built in Mexico in 1899. The blue train line connects West Elizabeth to New Austin(MacFarlane's ranch), and the red train line connects New Austin with Nuevo Parasio in 1911. The red train line might just not exist yet because it spans desert regions and has to cross borders, but a blue train line could still connect eastern New Austin to the rest of the map.

Yeah, I'm still betting on Nuevo Paraiso, just no international rail crossing into Mexico yet.

I'd say we watch the rails expand westward over the course of the game.  First into New Elizabeth, then on into New Austin and, if I'm right that Ambarino is Arizona, further west.  Mexico is a side jaunt, but unrelated to the railroads.  For now.

I think the train will be our fast-travel option in the game, as we progress through the story railroads will gradually be built throughout the map. The more complex question here is: will the fast-travel wagons from RDR1 return? I loved those.

I still wonder

I wont come up with the swimming and boats ^^

But do you guys think, what are all these islands at the other side of the Iron lake ? Ofc you do !

Imagine going by boat there and it's an all archipel going to the east part of Nuevo Paraiso

This game would include all the Biomes (just missing iceberg at the north with polar bear and old indian tribes ^^ (dreams.... rdr3 maybe for that part lol)

Oh and I forgot that there is a screen with a sleeping train.

we could imagine that to go from part to another will take 24 h ingame

Nice to get the New Austin Easter egg. Confirms my initial thoughts. However, I'm still on the fence about Nuevo Paraiso returning. The only way it returns is if this will be their remaster & ways for the PC players to play the original. I could see Amberino being Yucatan or Arizona. Leaning more Yucatan if Nuevo Paraiso doesn't return. Can't wait for details.

100% chance it is in, maybe in multiple forms.  Fast travel is necessary in any large open world game anymore, especially one where the fastest mode of transportation is a horse.

I don't think there will be any fast travel as we know it from Witcher, Ghost Recoon or Far cry.

And i also don't want to have any of these.

The thing is, if it's done smartly and realistically like sleeping bed trains or night sleight... time passing

It's almost a guarantee that trains and stagecoaches will be fast travel vehicles, just like in RDR.  I'm betting riverboat ferries will fast travel too, but we're still waiting to see them in previews.

imagine river ferries by night, playing poker on the way :O with a lot of side missions inside the boat itself, people to meet on the way *o* that would be awesome then at the end "welcome in Gaptooth Ridge"

That would suck.

Because I'd quit living in the real world...food, water, sleep, oxygen...must...have...Red....😲

You have a lot of these scenes in proper westerns. It would be a part of the Arthur's faith, a true adventure.

I think when they remap the first map it will be impossible to climb up to the Nuevo Paraiso. and no ports will be build in that part as well (for the first part at least)

But you can still swim or take boat. And as the map will be huge, ferries will be a thing (possibly) and as Rockstar want something realistic and details. That would be amazing. Then back on the ground back to the "real world". what would be he point to have that this huge and beautiful river. Imagine talking to a guy seeing the life around there from the boat.

A poker party  there would be something totally different from a saloon

I wonder if they had one team work on the north part of the map and one team work on the south part and we only got the north part leaked

Can you imagine being on a river ferry at night in the Lemoyne area and standing on the deck looking at the city all lit up, and then the atmosphere of the bayou the sound of frogs and crickets etc

Do we know where New Mondeaux, LeMoyne is?

Didn't know it existed until now. Seems a bit close to New Bordeaux which was the placeholder for Saint Denis.

Would be interesting if there was another hidden city. But we've seen no evidence of it yet.

A quick google result lists Mondeaux Dam, Westbro, Wisconsin. Not sure if that influenced it in any way.

Could just be a neighborhood of St. Denis, or a parish of Lemoyne.   I wouldn't expect an entire new town, but at this point I don't rule anything out.

Exactly. This is kind of a weird question to me because I am just assuming it will work like it did in RDR, which was perfect IMO.  You could also fast travel from camp to any area you'd discovered already, if I remember correctly; they achieved a good balance of immersion and convenience, and I see no reason for them to reinvent the wheel now.

This is pretty peculiar. There isn't exactly much room or reason for a whole new town. Maybe it's the proper name for a settlement? There are 4 settlements(Lagras, Caliga Hall, Sisika Penitentiary and Braithwaite Manor) for sure in that region. Maybe the Doctor has a toothpaste factory at Sisika where he can make use of prison labour?

The first thing that came to my mind was the French expression "Mon Dieu" which translates "My God!" Wouldn't be too out of character for a Rockstar created fictional name, haha.

Pretty sure we're looking at Shepherd's Rise here.

pO4hp0Y.jpg

Looking east:   Black Balsam Rise in Roanoke Ridge, off on the horizon.   Courthouse and Jailhouse clearly visible front and center; the Lake off to the right; Little Creek just down the draw to Arthur's left and front.

FutSoW4.jpg

Hard to tell with this crappy resolution, but if you have the 4K, you can spot at least 3 sheep grazing just to the right of Arthur.

Again with better res than I can show here, take a look down the hill to the right.   There's a corn silo just ahead....I marked it "Painted Sky?," but I doubt that...Painted Sky will be another rustlin' ranch.   Instead, that's probably  the sheep farm for Shepherd's Rise itself.

Even more curious is a really big dark building at the right of the screen, just visible past the apple tree.   On the map, this would mark the Applewood Timber Co., so it's likely this is a big sawmill/lumberyard.

I thought that screenshot was in the great plains facing towards blackwater?

Easier to read when you post the negative of that picture.

Looks a lot more like "New Bordeaux" for that tooth paste instead of "New Mondeaux"....New "Mondeaux" was probably 'shopped by an overzealous editor.   In any event, it reconfirms New Bordeaux in the pre-St. Denis days.

Lots of interesting double entendres and dirty in-jokes here, as you'd expect.   Some of the logos point to locations on the map --- "Merkin's Wigs" brings to mind Merkins Waller in Scarlett Meadows (a merkin, btw, is a pubic hair wig.  No kidding.)   Bulger & Cobb's Worsted Men's Pantaloons could be a reference to Bulger Glade, also in Scarlett Meadows.  Those Dr. Hawthorn and Millicent cigarettes/cigars appear on the cigarette cards in the pre-order collectible pack.   Some of the items hint at interesting stuff in the game we don't know about yet:

---several instances of bicycles, including a gun rack for bikes (!)

--- banjos indicate more musical instruments than just Javier's guitar

-- fertilizer could be used for some primitive homemade bombs

-- the phonograph looks like the one in Dutch's tent (also a direct rip-off of the old RCA Records logo)

-- decoys and duck calls could be available for hunting aids; or they may just stick to the generic "bait" used in RDR1

-- straight razor could serve as a small knife (and often did)

-- tobacco pipes confirmed

-- enemas and marital aids confirmed (Fingerblaster:  "the more fingers, the better she plays")

Not a chance. None of those buildings would be there.   Nor the sheep grazing.

100% certain that photo shows Shepherd's Rise and the Applewood Timber Company sawmill.  (Forget the Painted Sky I pencilled in:   Painted Sky wouldn't be visible to Arthur there, as it would be below the rise in front of him.   And is likely to be another cattle ranch.)

If that was Great Plains, Courthouse/Jailhouse and Black Balsam would be wayyy off in the distance to the NW; he's clearly riding NE.

Plus, none of those buildings would be there.   Nor the sheep grazing.

I swear someone managed to go into rdr1 and go to the same place that screenshot was in. That little bit of what looks like buildings on the right is Blackwater. And that main lake bit is the flat iron lake.

Dick Justice

Could Ambarino (Amber) be based on Colorado (Red), meaning it is actually only the area of the leaked map that the Grizzlies are in? Maybe there’s no grand expansion beyond those mountains or to the South at all.
