Mapping Red Dead Redemption 2! Landmark Analysis Thread

Recommended Posts

Based on the popular Mapping LC and Mapping LS threads, the mapmaking thread is back for RDR2!

The aim is to get an idea of real-world locations within the game, and hopefully recreate the in-game map, using official trailers and screenshots.

Scenes in order:

1 - hilly sunrise
2 - river, close up
3 - skull+fence+buildings
4 - forest, interior
5 - river, far away
6 - forest, campfire
7 - house in field
8 - foggy canoe
9 - train and bison
10 - town, carriage
11 - barn interior
12 - town, street
13 - oilfield
14 - fire
15 - 7 horse riders and plain

Can't wait for those real life buffalo skinning sounds.

It looks to be based on Texas, although there's one area with dense vegetation at 24 seconds in the video (along with a thin marsh or stream).

We didn't see any desert locations in the trailer, so that's either not going to be in the game or they're saving it for another trailer.

Some of the landscapes look pretty similar to the RDR existant ones. Chances for that leaked map to be real are still alive.

^Around 0:57 it shows a desertic localtion. Similar to New Austin.

I think they're doing an all-encompassing locale map like they did in RDR. The locations look varied, as well as the animal life.

The only thing that looks excluded is a Mexico area. So far.

You have some heavy coniferous forested areas, a dry western plains with tall plateaus which are at the base of a large snowy mountain range (the Rockies), you have rich soil plains, and by the looks of it some sort of mining town. There will be a Native American presence, a railroad with what seems to be a late 1880's to late 1890's locomotive, as well as oil fields. Considering oil fields, that's a wide array of areas too. Everyone likes to think Texas and Oklahoma, but they didn't crack into the oil fields into the late 1890s. Colorado in the 1860s, Wyoming in the 1880s. New Mexico? I'm not sure.

I think it's a safe bet we're going to get a wide range along the eastern Rockies states as far as game world.

Fort Worth Texas?

Upper right corner - is that an electric lamp? This can help set the time period.

Small electric grids were popping up all over the country by the 1890s, some earlier than that. So not really....we're still in a timeframe window that looks to be between Revolver and at least at the same time of the events of Redemption. At minimun, 1882 was the first electric grid in New York, so anything after that would be somewhat accurate.

Where do people see a desert? I've seen the trailer a couple of times now and I've seen no desert. The closest thing was a vast plain full of small growths with a wet and clear atmosphere. I don't think that the game is set in an area that covers a barren desert as the one featured in the middle to Western regions of New Austin of Redemption (e.g. Armadillo, Gaptooth Ridge, Tumbleweed). I'm not compaining here and I'm actually welcoming the change to a new area and an environment that focuses on lush greenery, wet and cultivated lands.

1880's those came out i believe.

Noticed the street light in this image also, could be the same town.

I tried mapping the creek with the leaked map, but i just can't get it to match.

I think that map is fake. My reasoning is because it uses the old map from RDR and will only have the existing part of Mexico.

I think it will be an entirely new, larger map with a larger Mexico.

This, I think it'll be entirely new.

I think there'd be more success in trying to match scenes in terms of mountains 'n landmarks and then seeing if it fits the supposed leak, instead of trying to fit individual screens onto it.

For reference in case anyone believes or wants to study the leaked map.
