Red Dead Online will be put in place of GTA Online in 2017?

I think that will be the cutting point for support. You guys are right that it's two different divisions but if anything I think it will be more like a passing of the torch to San Diego to keep the next big Rockstar multiplayer game interesting while the people in charge of the GTAO updates can be moved back into full development of GTAVI, Agent or whatever North is working on next.

 

In my opinion I think that would be the right time to stop. At this point no matter what they throw into the game it's still on the same map with the same driving and shooting mechanics we've been playing for the last 3 years, the game gets stale fast at this point no matter how many things they add to it. It's part of the reason I think story DLC wouldn't have worked considering every interesting landmark on the map has been used well within the online mainly during the heists.

I think updates might cease for GTA: Online next year, but I doubt they will close down the servers. Why? Because there's still a lot of content in the game, and there still will be more new content in the coming year. Looking at it another way, there are many people who's not into the whole wild west theme. Several of my friends kind of "disliked" RDR because of that and stuck to playing GTA IV back in the day.

 

Then, of course, RDR2 will not exactly have hundreds of cars and other vehicles to buy and own across six garages. I think that RDR2 will be good, but in more than one way rather substantially limited compared to GTA: Online. People will keep playing GTA because it's richer and modern. That's my belief anyway.

The art of running GTA Online is actually really simple on their part with the use of P2P for the game, rather than dedicated servers. The only bit they actually need to maintain is the social club character saves, but there's a very good chance they'll use that for RDR:O as well. I doubt GTA Online will be closed, if it'll be the end of the updates is another matter though...

Tbh, I really don't think there is much of an incentive to follow up on the shark card model of GTAO. The only feasible way to make RDRO work is to allow your character to choose whatever path that leads them into the the western open world based on the actions and choices they make (similar to how HBO's Westworld works).

 

Ex: Enter the world as a new character and allow your actions to dictate where your story begins. **** a whore and then probably get chased by a gang, Save a damsel in distress and get hired by the sheriff as a bounty hunter, or simply run a gang and pull off some old western heists.

Its kinda funny how them many things we take Granted in Ls won't be there in RD online. Knowing Rockstar's Authenticity, our characters won't even shower. $100.000 will be the new billion. Instead of buying cars we'll be riding to a specific ranch to pick out a specific breed, with the only customisation combining the right genes for a fast horse, one with high stamina or durable one for the low price of $100. No more insurance, as its replaced with your horse's survival. Simple slow passed heists hanging out the bar, with a random wanker throwing the first punch. Man...

Take two CEO cleary said that at some point they will let the Franchise rest for a bit. I would not be surprise if they stop updating GTA online for about 2 years prior to GTA 6. Would make sense if in 2017-2018 they will gradually stop releasing new content.

My guess, as GTA Online is produced by Rockstar North and RDR Online by Rockstar San Diego; is that we will see an update each 2/3 months for each.

​So for example:

GTA Online update #102: 5 October

RDR Online update #13: 15 November

​GTA Online update #103: 25 December

​RDR Online update #14: 5 February

​Etc. etc.

 

​So they will not clash; but keep both games alive for years to come.

And each month will be focussed around one Rockstar title; so they will keep making money every freaking month for the remainder of days.

If I'm being honest, GTA Online will probably be way bigger (in terms of players) than Red Dead Online will ever be. GTA 5 is one of the biggest games in history, and the multiplayer STILL has a lot of players even 3 years later. So it would be unwise for Rockstar to stop supporting GTAO and move onto one multiplayer platform.
