Should GTA Online have come out before GTAV?

I think if this happened, the main plot of GTAV would make more sense, why Trevor doesn't like the Lost MC, etc etc.

They should've just included it with GTA V, and ditched this pretense that it's a separate game.

They should have made GTA Online a standalone game and made GTA V multiplayer like GTA IV's. Being standalone, Rockstar would have had more control of the plot and release date.

I'm not a fan of the anachronism (we have post 2013 vehicles and songs in the game now, even though the game technically still takes place in 2013) even though I do get that they probably made multiplayer take place before single player to avoid spoiling the events of SP.

I don't see the point in trying to keep continuity.

I like to think our characters are trapped in a hellish nightmare as punishment for dieing the first time in the online world.

someone did the math and the number of gta 'years' that have passed (48 minutes real time is a day in gta online) since Oct 2013 launch is like 90ish years....

so yeah.

As mentioned by psymin up here, R* probably made the Online world a nightmare being stuck on some place where you die and still get alive and the things keep repeating as like some nightmares do in real life. Think of this Online world a nightmare where all the things(you can place DLCs here) get added as you pass time in this same nightmare.

Like i had a nightmare once where i kept dying and the whole thing would start over and i would do some things differently and the out come would result in me dying in just a different way. yep i think this resulted from playing GTAO for 6-7 hours every day.

Dr Labuschagne

What?!

Are you hearing yourself? It would have been worse than what people have now. The more logical question would be if it was delayed for the release of November or next year other than 3rd OCT...

R* needs to drop the whole "story mode" crap and just make one really good online game, then make dlcs that are based around old games like Red Dead, gta stories, etc.

My biggest disappointment with hearing is the new release of Red dead is that all my efforts in gta5 online will be all for nothing, and lost to a whole new game. Id like to see online as a continuous experience with many themed locations from past games.

I can dream...

No, GTA V should still be the first game that anyone plays, Online would've been better if it had been set half a year after the events of GTA V because we have the end-game news and Meltdown for some reason.

No, no, and good f*cking lord NO!

R* needs to discard any suggestions that requests them to drop story mode and stick with Online, because guess what? They've been doing a goddamn great job at making stories for the GTA series eversince GTA III back in 2001.

So tell me, is it logical to abandon what they've been good at for 12 years and milk the hell out of a fragile barely working online gamemode? Never suggest such an idiotic thing.

Just think of the online universe and story mode universe as two alternate realities. Trying to combine the two doesn't seem to add up in terms of canon or consistency, so it's best to just appreciate both for being two different experiences within a nearly identical location and with some liberties taken with the overlap of character appearances and so forth.

I agree, as much as I would like to see a continued and well-made/improved online experience, story mode is what sets the stage and brings the new atmosphere alive. Without it, you would have nothing more than a new map with cardboard characters lacking proper explanation, back stories, motives, characteristics, etc. While you can discard canon between online and story mode, you can easily take the distinct and well-developed personalities of the characters who overlap into account whilst playing online.

Discarding story mode entirely would be a huge mistake; it would break the series as a whole and GTA would never have the same feel ever again. Besides, many of us enjoy the stories; San Andreas was absolutely incredible and it would have been a shame if online had existed back then and developers did not put forth any effort into making the story come alive.

I know this does not contributes that much...but i really do not care.

There are continuity errors no matter how you look at it

Even though I didn't particularly like SP and I do like GTAO a lot, story mode should always come first with this series. They just need to do a better job of it. It would also be good if there was a much improved integration of SP into online so it wasn't just cardboard cut out characters (oh look it's Trevor, bye Trevor) and there was actual depth to the online experience beyond hammering out basic missions and killing each other.

I don't care about canon and continuity on the whole but I might if I liked SP more, I think it's fair to say that Rockstar didn't plan it especially well. They should have had GTAO taking place either before SP or after it and stuck to it.

I don't consider GTAO to be any part of GTAV's timeline - to me it's just a multiplayer playground that gives us access to the GTAV world that shares a few familiar faces for the sake of putting missions into some vague form of context.

I may create my own identity and narrative in my head but that's all it is... it's for our own entertainment and replay value only.

Pssst... R*... can you write me into GTAVI? Pretty please? I'll pre-order RDR2, promise

Who gives a f*ck about the "story" part of GTA Online? Really...

No, multiplayer should always be something optional in any case. It doesn't help to understand anything, it's just here to entertain.

That reminds of the Stanley Parable. Great game on Steam if anyone gets a chance to play it.

If they ease off the endless onslaught of Baby's First Satire and write some good characters I might actually finish GTAVI's story mode. Its been GTAO all the way since launch day for me, so much so that Courtney's story, such as it is, is really the story of GTAV for me...

Seconded. Didn't know what to think at first but after playing through multiple times I recommend it too.
