New Red Dead Engine

Recommended Posts

HungryDingo

Man i loved the physics engine in Red Dead Redemption, i loved how enemies reacted to your shots, arms, legs and all they would crawl and stumble around when you shot them even stumble over if you shot them in the head, fire one last shot before they die or stand on their knees shooting if you shot both their legs. You could even shoot guns out of people's hands. GTA V however feels lifeless when you kill someone, they don't react at all. GTA 4 even had enemies react to shots better than GTA 5 did.

Here's a great example.

they've been using the same engine since GTAV (technically since their table tennis game) they've just been updating it

I want to see bloody footprints again since GTA 5 didn't have them for whatever reason. Oh, and the possibility of having actual bar fights where you can pick up chairs, glass bottles, etc.

GTA V did have them.

Really? I dont recall that at all.

But still, GTAV was physically disappointing but a technical marvel on last gen. I just wish they actually fixed the AI for next gen and PC

I cant wait for the trailer to see what they did with the engine, graphics etc.

The game could have excellent graphics, there are no cars, the towns were not that big in that time.

Rockstar have never been the best at graphics. But the lighting on GTA V, specifically the sky at certain times of day was just amazing.

The setting on red dead is more apt for that kind of detail too, so I'm excited to see the sunsets.

Show me a picture because I have never seen them at all when I walked over numerous blood pools.

GTA V had both bloody footprints and bloody tiremarks.

I know about the tire marks, and judging from the picture, those are supposed to be footprints? They look more like Michael had a few bloody accidents while walking away from the blood pool. Besides, they must be a rare occurrence in singleplayer then, because I know I haven't seen them in GTA Online ever.

Still gonna use the dusty RAGE engine with a few tweaks.. People still use UE3 & that still holds up.

yeah I expect an updated and improved version of RAGE. I doubt R* start from scratch on a new engine.

Idk, I recall seeing them before. They aren't guaranteed to show up everytime.

Maybe they got glitched out in a patch.

In 2012 rockstar had a job opening for someone to help build a next gen engine so i wouldnt rule out the possibillity of their being a new one.

I can believe that since Rockstar tends to (intentionally) break things with every patch.

RAGE is a constant evolving engine, it doesn't get numbers or anything it just has designated builds, a very quick summary of features and builds would be close to the following

1

- Table Tennis

2

- GTA IV

- MC LA

- EFLC

2.5 (Highly custom on the go lack of documentation, coded mess, etc)

- Red Dead Redemption

3

- Max Payne 3

- GTAV

We'll have to see when the game is out if this RDR is another split off build like the last one or if it's a full on new build of RAGE, from the trailer alone it does seem like 3 with a new particle system.

It's very similar to gta V. The look , the colour, the clouds.

It's no a big of a jump compared to gta IV to red dead redemption 1

Could that be more of rockstar north's involvement?

Wish they would leave it to San Diego because I love that vibe. It actually didn't feel like gta with cowboys. And I don't want that with this one, thanks.

Dee.

Its a shame that its visually on par with GTAV. they are reusing a lot of assets.

I hope that isnt true for the physics and animations..

It is somewhat suprising that GTA IV wasn't using the first iteration of RAGE considering still how new it was back then.

Looks like Rockstar Table Tennis was a testing ground for their new engine that also happens to be a game.

Nice to see upgraded RAGE and see a true current-gen Rockstar title. Graphics is OK, there are plenty of similarities with V, especially lighting and weather conditions. Milky Way skybox makes sense here, hell, it's before popularity of electricity.

By the looks of it I don't really see too much improvement over V when it comes to graphics, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing anyway. If you ask me the visuals look great the way they are at the moment.

So is San Diego the studio doing the work this time too? Wonder if they're already hard at work with GTA VI at North...

My guess is that all of the rockstar studios are working on rdr2 while gtavi is in pre-production with only a few ppl working on it.

I read somewhere that all of the studios collaberate and help each other.

Probably yes, they made a lot of effort for RAGE, so in my theory, they improved a lot of features and send build to other R* studios. In this time they could not be directly related to make a story, characters, landscapes, etc.

Rockstar San Diego are making it.

I just hope they have the Max Payne 3 euphoria physics cranked up to 100%.

Even in Red Dead Redemption 1 the physics are amazing.

Yeah the more i watch it the more the glaring similarity to V's lighting and color palette in particular become apparent. It still looks great but wish they would have switched up the color a bit more so it didn't look quite like V. I do get a feeling they are going for the northern states cooler look as opposed to the warmer tones of the arid and parched environment in RDR. I'm hoping as it is still a year away that it will be adjusted and made to look a bit more unique to the RDR2 world.

I think GTA Online actually lacks a lot of graphical details from singleplayer to improve performance.

I was heavily reminded of V as soon as I saw the elks, because I think they're near identical to the ones in V. Generally to me it looks very much like GTA V with a more "lush" nature, but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing.

I hope it's leaps and bounds ahead of Rockstar's last-gen output, graphically. There are only a handful of truly 'next-gen' looking games (The Order, Uncharted 4, Battlefront, and Battlefield 1 come to mind) whereas the rest look like upscaled, slightly polished 2013 releases.

Take Watch Dogs 2, for instance. Barely looks better than GTA V. Same with Witcher 3. I'm hoping Red Dead is on-par with something like The Order. Imagine interiors in-game with this level of fidelity:

You can already tell from the trailer that this won't happen. And you're comparing a big open-world game to a short linear game with a bunch of scripted sequences.

I don't think what you guys are noticing is simply "Color Palette" it has more do to with the renderer and the significant upgrade it got for GTA V. Also the RAGE engine was created & is maintained by R* San Diego.

As with all Rockstar's open world games the color palette varies based on environment & weather.

It looks incredibly good to me, well beyond what I expected. I think alot of it is to do with the lighting. But also just how rich the environments are, and the animations look next level.

Can't wait.
