New Red Dead Engine

Recommended Posts

What are you most excited about and or wanting to see with the next gen game engine?

Taking a look at MP3's Euphoria Physics, the quality is incredible. Everything from shooting limbs, to the ragdoll physics. And that gore!

I'm looking forward to it being more brutal in terms of realism in reactions and procedural animations, as cliche as that sounds. RDR was pretty brutal, even compared to IV of V, I assume because of their contemporary settings vs RDR's more "fantastical because time setting" where they could do that without as much flak.

Other than that, I am really hoping for a marked improvement visually. V looks good, but you can tell it is "ultra settings last gen game" where it looked one way on consoles, then new consoles and moreso PC looked like ultra. It is certainly not last gen in that it uses tesselation and high end post effects only possible on the newgen consoles, but were all possible on PC before the old gen was released, so I am looking forward to the "extended/less limited budget" RDR3 can have since it's not as demanding as GTA (no heavy traffic, modern lighting, modern props, smaller towns vs big city, less reflective stuff) - I am looking forward to seeing RDR3 really take advantage of its "roomier budget" on the newgen consoles and really wow us.

Hoping for that next level of lighting, as well. Lighting is the main thing for any 3d rendering, and I hope that it goes all the way since it will have such a more relaxed budget compared to a modern setting.

Well, we know (through Job openings) it will have Physically Based Rendering, so there's that.

I hope it's leaps and bounds ahead of Rockstar's last-gen output, graphically. There are only a handful of truly 'next-gen' looking games (The Order, Uncharted 4, Battlefront, and Battlefield 1 come to mind) whereas the rest look like upscaled, slightly polished 2013 releases.

Take Watch Dogs 2, for instance. Barely looks better than GTA V. Same with Witcher 3. I'm hoping Red Dead is on-par with something like The Order. Imagine interiors in-game with this level of fidelity:

Honestly, canyonjack, battlefront and bf1 don't look that impressive to me. Uncharted 4 is decent, the order is too, but the other two games, I don't think they are that great tbh. they look great, but they look like last gen PC versions of old gen games on very high/ultra to me.

Wait..really?! :O

Yeah, there was a call for someone to work on that pipe, but we can't be guaranteed it's for THIS game or that this game is being updated to work with it - it could be one or two more already-in-development-before-PBR-took-spotlight games before we really see it. OR it could be a priority, hopefully, for them to be on that asap.

I hope physics are much smoother and the blood and gore is improved. It has to be better than V's ketchup blood.

You have some outlandish expectations if your hoping an open world game will look as detailed as a linear FPS shooter.

Open-world games always catch up eventually, especially with R* at the helm.

For a similar comparison, look at Uncharted 3 (2011) and GTA V. 2 year gap, V looks more impressive. I'd be surprised if RDR3 wasn't at least on-par with Uncharted 4.

I'm honestly not sure if it will look as good as Uncharted as that game had very high quality character models for the main characters and whatnot. However, this will be the first current gen game that will make full use of current gen hardware by Rockstar and considering how much RDR was ahead of its time I'd be surprised if the trailer doesn't blow us away, which I'm fully expecting it to.

You're expecting The Order's level of detail?

We haven't even got a title yet and still people are overhyping themselves.

There are so many people with such completely unrealistic expectations for this game. No wonder people end up so disappointed by games these days, you're all living in complete fantasies pre-release.

To be fair, there have been open world games that set the benchmark for graphics fidelity and technology for the time: Operation Flashpoint, Mafia, Far Cry, Crysis, AssCreed 1, LA Noire were visually quite on par with the linear games of their eras, at least in some areas.

Usually it's mostly the texture resolution that's scaled back for obvious memory constrains but even that isn't always the case, and various shader effects, lighting quality, animations etc. can be done just as well in open world like in closed world, depending on how capable the engine is of course.

I just want the physics to be NOT dumbed down like in GTA V. I dont care for graphics etc. :)

Do we dare bring up that render that someone stole from a Rockstar employee's portfolio?

Open world games requre a whole other level of computing power to even come close to look like BF1, UC4, The Order etc...

Its not possible on current console tech tbh

Seeing a new engine for RD3 will not only let us see what Rockstar are capable of on CG consoles but it gives us some sort of idea on what to expect for future Rockstar Games. GTA 6 comes to mind.

Other than loving RDR that is one of the main things that excites me. This will be the first completely CG title and Rockstars ability to improve on their game engine even within the same generation such as from V to IV is always amazing.

Again, they've done it before. Look at Uncharted 3 and compare it to GTA V. This is not unheard of for Rockstar.

Well with them making well over 2 billion in the last three years, they gotta make SOMETHING work! I'm not expecting The Order or Uncharted but I am expecting 3-4 bars higher than GTA V. The setting is going to grab my attention by the balls and I'll fall in love.

I want to see bloody footprints again since GTA 5 didn't have them for whatever reason. Oh, and the possibility of having actual bar fights where you can pick up chairs, glass bottles, etc.

The main thing with open-world games is you gotta do a ton of streaming from HDD to RAM, I'm not a huge tech guy but I assume that takes quite a bit of CPU cycles.

Yeah it's about time for them to take things up a notch, PBR's something Rockstar should've added before.

I mean, a lot of assets in V look near to PBR materials, I have seen some really accurate stuff in that game, just not all of it, specular workflow can look just as good and it does in V, it's just harder in traditional specular. PBR makes stuff easier for artists once they are dialed into values, but complicates realtime stuff so far and a lot of bake happens with it, might be why it took a while and using all those reflection nodes and cubemaps in V mighta been done as a step in that direction, since r* tends to do a lot of realtime stuff, baking only the must bake stuff.

Lol what are you, some kiddo that finds the driving too hard in GTA IV, and excellent in V?

-I said I care for physics because I don`t doubt that the other aspects of the game will be great. Euphoria engine is barely even used in V, they literally throw away most of the 'behaviors' from IV/RDR and MP3.
Fighting system is garbage in V too compared to other R* games.
I just hope they wont do that again and use some actually improved version of euphoria this time... :)

Imagine a Red Dead game post 2005 with GTAV's physics and gore and forced animations (like your character instantly running after you shoot, or being able to knock someone out literally by pressing R2, or not being able to grab ledges and your character instantly sliding at every drop off)

*shivers*

I really hope R* SD pushes RAGE to its limits and utilizes Euphoria in a whole new way

I have yet to see a game as graphically well presented as The Order was. Shame it was a load of wank.
