Red Dead Redemption 2: Discussion & Speculation (Part 1)

I'm not sure if this means anything but if you go to the Rockstar Games' games section http://www.rockstargames.com/games, you can see Red Dead Redemption is developed by Rockstar San Diego, GTA V is developed by Rockstar North, but Red Dead Redemption 2 is developed by Rockstar Studios. Does this mean all Rockstar divisions worked on this? Could be good news since it gives some hope for a PC port 1-2 years later.

You are correct. They've mentioned that whenever they need help they grab people from the other studios, so this might mean R* San Diego didn't so everything on their own this round.

I think Dan Houser is a better writer on Non-GTA stuff, i think with GTA he gets kind of lazy, but i think with Red Dead he is going to show some great writing

I like parts of RDR script, but I hope Rockstar finally hires some pro storywriters and scriptwriters for this. One would think that a game with a $115M budget (GTAV) could afford to hire some writers.

This is the heart of the problem, a very real problem. 02 The big developers spend literally tens of millions building a beautiful virtual world, and then they spend a bunch more millions producing a full single player story for it. 02More often than not, the single player story mode is a flop. 02

Yup, absolutely right.

For instance, GTA V offers a fine single player experience on some level, but accepting it as "great" or "excellent" single player so far, esp., compared to the past titles, feels like many fans are not too keen or willing nor interested in taking up the issue with the kind of downgrade, and so much missing potential of making the single player and core gameplay better,

 

It looks like players these days try to analyze the games based on the production values and how beautiful and immersive the virtual world feels to explore to make single player worth passing the time, and switching to MP seems the most common response to the critics for anything missing from the SP.

Instead of raising their expectations for a much stronger and excellent SP they seem to be satisfied and very happy with this kind of bargain deal and the developers are smart enough to know that they should focus on such customers who agree to their terms and conditions whose main goal is to milk the most out of them.

I only remember Max Payne 3 being developed by more than one or two R* subsidiaries, and I think the PC version also played a factor in that?

Yup that was the case too. Looking into it, RDR 2 is being done by both Rockstar North and San Diego. This game is gonna be larger than normal.

From reddit user DestinyCE, I think it's looking like a prequel.

 

I'm not so sure. The one on the left most resembles John Marston, but a bit bulkier with thicker facial hair. The one to his right that everyone is saying is Javier Escuela looks more like a bearded Edgar Ross to me. Dutch? Maybe if you squint hard enough. Bill Williamson is the only one who looks REALLY close. But then again, put any bearded guy in similar clothes and a grainy silhouette will resemble him. I'm probably biased due to my preferences, but I'm thinking everyone is looking too hard into this and assuming these are characters we know. It very well may be that these are entirely new characters with an entirely new story set in the same world (different time?). That's not to say there won't be crossovers or references / easter eggs.

But it's all speculation either way until we see a trailer. No matter what it is, I can't wait.

NO, DONT FALL FOR THAT CRAP, red dead was a "twilight of the old west" tale - a Hollywood trope - go ahead and google the same in quotes ("red dead redemption" "twilight of the old west") and google "twilight of the old west" by itself to get the top result easily!- maybe, just maybe, it isn't that in this game. Also, what stops them from making a game centered around dutch as the protag (not prequel, but same time, like johnny and luis in GTA IV dlc)? See page 89 for a theory on that!

Really surprised by the name choice, but I already got used to it, and it makes sense since it's related to Red Dead Redemption's storyline. For all of you worried about the focus on online multiplayer, Rockstar Games also said that the game tells an "epic tale of life in America's unforgiving heartland". So, that means that it'll have a huge single player component.

 

However, I'm really liking what I've seen so far, and I can't wait to finally watch the trailer.

Look for the fan art thread in this section of the forum, people made a lot of desktops so far.

Just because it's called Redemption 2 doesn't mean that it's going to have thematic or story ties to Redemption. As far as we know, this may become the series' official title (Redemption 2, 3....). The trailer on Thursday will indicate whether we are in for a completely new cast and story, or what some speculates as a return of old characters. Personally, I believe the first and I can see the game taking place away from the events and lands of Redemption, and in particular in the Midwest.

GTA online is the most successful online game ever, and you guys are surprised there highlighting online in RDR 2?

Success of Online isn't an issue for me. The major concern is whether or not the developers are going to repeat the same approach of being too deeply involved and focused in one direction ( online ) investing all the resources to support Red Dead Online in every capacity, rather than the resources to work the same in making single player as excellent as they did in the past.

I don't want to read such statements anymore when asked about SP DLC and/or any future plans for improving SP.

Right now our focus is on GTA Online which has exceeded our expectations. We currently have all key members of the team that launched Grand Theft Auto V focused on supporting GTA Online in every capacity.

Dont wanna jump to conclusions but...maybe R* has changed completely and ONLINE will be their biggest focus from now on

It'll probably be as tied as GTA IV and GTA V are. You might get some recurring characters and whatnot, but are really separate entities. R* really aren't into "sequels" on a conventional level.

 

The one thing is if it's set after Redemption that's pretty late for a Western. Redemption was meant to show the West in its dying stages.

 

Another possibility is it could be set roughly around the same time as Redemption, but that would probably make it feel too similar.

This could be a good or bad thing.. Red Dead is San Diego's baby...If all the studios are just throwing random stuff in from their titles, we'll end up with another GTAV. And that doesn't fir the feel of Red Dead. But still...I hope R* knows why fans love Red Dead and stay true to the first one....Im so nervous I just want a R* game that I can fall in love with again lol

^ "throwing random stuff from their titles" that's not how it works, San Diego alone could do that, after all they also have access to everything. Since Max Payne 3, development of their games is a joint effort between all studios. There'll always be a lead studio/people of sorts who manage the story and the decisions. If anything it's a good sign to the game's development.
