Red Dead Redemption 2: Discussion & Speculation (Part 1)

BTW for those who hope for a prequel or another adventure with John Marston: the guy that voiced John has retired from voice work entirely, went on to work on his ranch and pledged he's not going to do that kind of stuff again (I watched that on some reliable source tho I don't remember where it was). So John coming back is very unlikely.

Unless an opportunity arises. He's the only one who can play Marston. You can bet that if it's indeed a prequel they went by him first. Rob didn't know what he was himself getting into when voicing John. Times change.

Agreed with all that.

My one big worry about the new Red Dead - more so than who it's about or where/when it takes place, because I truly don't care that much - is that they might go a GTA V route and make it bigger but less detailed/realistic. As most of us know, V is massive compared to IV, but a lot of the little details are missed. Things like the police AI are very simplified and dumbed down. Funny enough, I never really cared about that - it doesn't affect my enjoyment of GTA much because it's the big picture (and the chaos factor) that I enjoy. But Red Dead needs to be as detailed and lived-in as possible, IMO.

Let's hope so! Let us pray for a massive detailed open-world with all walks of NPC life as well as Animals. I'm sure the first trailer will blow our minds!

I read an article about and interview with him earlier today, where this was said:

"I had a cool experience; there's no guarantee I'll ever have anything like it again. I thought, screw it, if anyone wants me for anything, they'll call me." So Wiethoff left Los Angeles behind. Once again, he became a small-town man. So far, no one has called.

That's pretty different from, "I'll never do it again." He's retired from acting but that bit makes it sound like he would do it again if the right opportunity came knocking. Another relevant quote:

But don't expect to see him in another big-budget game anytime soon. "I'd be thrilled if it was something I wanted to do," he says, "but I have obligations now I didn't have before. It's different."

Doesn't sound like the door is entirely shut; neither is entirely open. I imagine Rockstar finding the right-sized dump truck full of money would make it happen.

I'm glad, in a way. John's story was such a tragedy, that to have him return as a playable character would really diminish how we saw his story end.

Like, after you've seen Macbeth, you don't need an entirely new play about how the guy learned to play the bagpipes.

I get that people loved the character. But what they did with him was one of the few moments of genuine beauty and tragedy in gaming - showing how the government chewed him up and spat him out. Not a new message, but one which, when handled well, is outstandingly poignant. As it was in Gangs of New York or the TV masterpiece Deadwood.

Having him return would diminish him, and I'd put money on gamers not having nearly so fond a perception of him if he did.

Thunderstorms were so cool on Red Dead Redemption. Whenever a lightning strike would show the horses and other animals in the area would react. If you saw a couple horses hitched at a hitching post in a small town they would kick back a little bit and "nay". The atmosphere in Red Dead Redemption was incredible.

NPCs doing a whole bunch of things. NPCs literally playing fetch with a dog by throwing a stick and the dog would bring it back, using the out houses to take a leak, pulling along side a road and getting off the horse to take a leak, bandits rolling into town causing trouble.

Just imagine this next installment! ;)

If that leaked map were true then we will be able to build our own little settlements like Fallout 4 :) Imagine making your own town and defending it from indians or bandits. Even thought it might not be true, Rockstar will make the AI and NPCs more alive since they have much more power with the next gen and PC.

Did he get gunned down by the government as well?

I just hope it won't be a console exclusive title like the first game was... Red Dead deserves to be on PC.

Finally placed all members who know of its existence!

Wasn't Abigail just a fresh young (excuse my language) whore in Dutch's gang? Being passed around so everyone could tap that country western putananey?

I think you're onto something. It really does seem like those COULD be the characters in the silhouette. Remember that rumor from GAF that someone knew an actor who was voicing an half white/native american character for the upcoming Red Dead? That could possibly be Dutch. Possibly a younger version of him. Look at his attire in RDR.

For those who need a much cleaner, clearer image.

I thought it was the old gang but after seeing this close up I think its a completely new gang. Some guy said that was abigail on the far right in the close up pic, it resembles a man's stature maybe an american indian gang member. The way they're standing gives off a justice or law enforcement vibe maybe bounty hunters or something.

I think it will became a standard option. In fact, to go a step further, I would be surprised if R* hasn't at least THOUGHT about VR, if not gone ahead and laid the groundwork for full VR support. (Of course, I think the same is true of all major developers).

I'd imagine it'll come out 6 months to a year after consoles.

RDR's development was a nightmare so one would imagine they've learned from that situation.

Everyone assuming its Marston and the gang but Rockstar are the king of mind games, i'm not sure what to expect but i wouldn't be surprised if its 7 completely different characters.

I am actually worried about the PC version. Releasing GTAV on PC after the consoles worked out well for them since a lot of people double dipped. As a result the PC sales were really good. What if Rockstar wants to do the same with Red Dead? Release the console version first and don't talk about a PC version so people will chime in and then eventually announce a PC version.

As evil as it is, from a business point of view it probably is more profitable than releasing all versions at the same time.

Or am I just being too cynical

And what's the problem in find another actor for this role with similar voice?

That would suck and I would rather they don't bring John back at all then. His VA did such a great job in RDR, anyone else would feel wrong

If they do go the GTA Online formula route could we be looking at the possibility of Shark Cards being renamed to a "Fistful of Dollars" and "For a Few Dollars More" type scenario? :D

If anything, the old gang picture could still line up if you take the 2nd character from the left and think of them as Abigail...which would make sense being by John's side. Person seems to have a more slender frame, and a bit of hair hang down from beneath the brim...giving off a slight bit of feminine presence.

Could be just us reaching though.

I still say the odds of it being an entirely new story and new gang are almost certain. It is so rare for Rockstar to bring a character from another console generation and put them in a new game, regardless if they are ever a main, secondary, or background NPC. I think maybe there was one guy from VC or SA that appeared briefly in GTA IV, but that's about it (oh and Johnny getting his ass stomped by Trevor, but that techincally wasn't cross-gen).

This image confirms my suspicions: Our protagonist will be an Amish man travelling in the modern west.

Before people begin jumping on their high horses, yes some Amish men do smoke, so this image is pretty much a carbon of what's happening.

I think the fact that New Bordeux is different is confirmation enough that it was fake.

I'm sure the PC sales will be really good regardless, I mean look at GTA V on Steam for example, it's remains at the top of the best selling games since the game launched... clearly there's people buying it eveyday.

My point is, Rockstar doesn't need to pull out a dick move like delaying the game on purpose to get more sales.
