Red Dead Redemption 2: Discussion & Speculation (Part 1)

Jason: If Take-Two buys THQ Nordic tomorrow for $400 million it will be the biggest gaming news for the next few weeks and ironically i read that they were going to buy the original THQ back in 2003-some ten years before it went bankrupt- but made a u-turn and acquire a company now as TDK Mediactive. Heck they also get this Tiny Racers-esque game:https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bang_Bang_Racingand most of their franchises will be great movie adaptations.

 

Movie adaptions would be a very poor reason to buy a video game developer though especially when you take into account that no one else has made much of a success of it as yet. Also, basically all of TellTales IP's are lisenced as well - The Walking Dead (comic) The Wolf Among Us (Fables comic), Borderlands (Gearbox w/ 2K publishing), Guardians of the Galaxy (Marvel), Batman (obviously). Those lisences do absolutely not extend to film, lol. Hell, looking at THQ Nordic's list of games there's nothing there that jumps out either. The only video games series that are even touted as getting potential films right now are mega-franchises like Gears of War, Halo, Assassins Creed's recent film, etc. Besides if Take-Two want to go that route they'll probably start with BioShock and go from there.

 

As for someone like Take-Two taking over THQ Nordic being big news for weeks - nah, not really. If it were Rockstar, Valve, or some other massively popular developer then yes. But other than that no one really finds it interesting, it's more of a "oh, that's interesting, hope they don't ruin them" or something along those lines.

They own Rockstar so i guess you mean if they indirectly through R* acquire THQ? And actually EA's NFS and AB's WarCraft were successful oversee compared to Ubisoft's AC which was a decent film. I think they should just buy the other one on my list, Zenimax just for Bethesda and IPs including Elders Scroll, Fallout, Quake among others.

 

 

Edit: Like 60% of Zenimax for $1 Billion in cash with option to buy the remain 40% within 5 years.

Yea those are the situations when you get the chequebook out if you're someone like EA, Take Two, or in this case Sony. THQ's collapse was the same back in the day, though even with a popular franchise like Saints Row they didn't get any really big suitors and it ended up going to Deep Silver.

I used Rockstar as an example of company a big company would want to splash the cash to take over - not that they should acquire THQ through them or anything. There's a reason you rarely see these big developers bought, it's just not worth it. It's nice to theorise and speculate about Take-Two or whomever buying companies like Bethesda and having all those great IP's under one roof, but eh, it's 99.9% never going to happen if only for the reason that there's no point.

Jason: Great points man. Tbh i love Take-Two's strategy of maximising it valuation slowly and smartly with non-expensive acquisitions and more in-organic like buying both the EVOLVE IP and WWE license for less than $20 million and getting into mobile with just $250 million (of course they going to build it up with Social Point into a big business) unlike AB buying King for $4 Billion which is yet to pay off. If anything they might even buy the 4/5 in my list for dirt cheap. Max Payne got them into movies so BioShock ecpand that will be great plus they get royalty from Lionsgate adapting Z-Men from their now-defunct comic book division. I think all "Big three" are overvalued and the fact Take-Two will be sitting on $12 Billion of market valuation and it makes less than $5 Billion in annual revenue is crazy but it well deserve it thank to Digital revolution.

To be honest I'd be disappointed if during the weeks leading up to RDR2's release when we're all off our t*ts on pure hype and excitement and BLOOD didn't pop in and update us on what Strauss Zelnick was having for tea that particular day and what his thoughts on Take-Two's stock price is. Part of the furniture at this point, innit.
