Red Dead Redemption 2: Discussion & Speculation (Part 1)

Lets begin building a picture of what we think we can expect...

 

I don't think Rockstar are going to do multiple protagonists twice in a row, however if they do I can imagine them to use two rather than three. Although I did love the dynamic between the protagonists in GTA V, personally I think 3 was too many, especially if they do it two games in a row.

I don't think we're going to get a female protagonist (unless there are multiple) and I also think that unless they go the half american/half native route, we'll be playing as an American. Another route they could go down is to have a black protagonist and follow a Django style story? (not sure if this would be too controversial though)

 

As for the setting of the game, I think it's safe to say it won't be any later than 1911, as the West was really in it's last days and I can't imagine they'd want to do anything that's too "un-western" such as include cars etc.

 

On the other hand the weapons available during Redemption was such a good selection. I'm not up on my western history but not sure how many of these were available much before the early 1900s?

What we don't want is for there to be a much more limited amount of weapon types due to the age, so I can't imagine it to be set too far back into the 1800s. I'd imagine 1890s-1900s as the ideal time for the game.

I think we're looking at a single male protagonist set somewhere in the mid 1890s.

But the thing is, V is a very different genre. You can't compare a game where you can fly, go 200KM/H in a car etc. to a game where you're on horseback at a moderate pace. Thats where The Witcher 3 comes handy. Its just a rough parallel comparison.

 

 

Also, you're saying its not possible for RDR3 to meet or exceed the graphically quality of The Witcher 3? Rockstar has been making game engines quite a bit longer than CD Projekt

I think you're missing the point. The point here is not what the game contains and features. It's about the engine running the game.

 

Comparing the engines on the basis that they both have open landscapes and horses is nonsensical. Comparing The Witcher 3 to Red Dead Next is oranges and apples. Different engine, different company, different game, different dev team, etc.

 

Now, comparing a game that will almost certainly be using the same engine is much more fair, because the engines will be, for the most part, identical, other than what they put into it. So, saying that V and RDNext will look comparatively similar makes sense, because... I can't believe I'm saying this again... it's the same game engine behind it regardless of the planes etc.

Yes man I understand, but you're making it sound like CD Projekt got their game engine technology from Mars. Its just a rough comparison between 2 games of similar genre. Keyword, "rough".

 

And yes, the games are very similar. What do you do in RDR2? you ride a horse, you get off the horse to kill things, you ride horse to stores to sell stuff. You kill more things, go exploring, go talk to people who are part of quests or accept bounties. Thats also what you do in The Witcher 3. CD Projekt has stated that they used RDR2 for inspiration, and its probably the biggest inspiration(besides The Witcher 2).

 

And to be honest with you man, I have walked around in the desert in GTA V PS4 to try to imagine what RDR3 will look like. I hope you're pleased with that.

Now I read that people want it to be somewhere around the 1890s. But that's like the the last of the old West. Wouldn't it be more fun to explore the world before Marston? 1835 with no automobiles but when outlaws ruled the West? The story RDR had those days behind them. Outlawd were hunted instead of feared.

Personally I'd like this, my only worry though is that it would limit the amount of weapon types available? Maybe I'm wrong (not sure when certain rifles, shotguns, revolvers were created) but nobody wants single shot weapons

 

It would be good to have a more raw western experience though, and not see so much of the modernisation such as Blackwater.

 

I think GTA has fell into a similar trap, where they can't really make a GTA that isn't set in the modern day as they'd lose the mobile feature, as well as the ability to have all of the latest cars (which seems to be a huge plus point for the online community)

Red Dead Redemption came out almost 7 years ago. This is the first piece of solid evidence we've had for the release of a new game in the series, I can't see them releasing a trailer so soon after such a big gap.

This will just be the announcement they had originally planned to release at the last E3 convention, but had to hold back on it due to the Paris or Nice thing (or Orlando).

 

Whatever they release, it's going to be a good 18months before we see the game.

 

Nah 2017 me thinks. Spring even. But they will probably say 2017 at the end of the trailer or announcement for now.
