Red Dead Redemption 2: Discussion & Speculation (Part 1)

I know I'll be wrong but I'm still guessing October 31, 2017 as the release date. (No Undead Nightmare jokes intended because it happens to fall on Halloween - UN wasn't released on Halloween but it'll be cool to play around with that holiday for Red Dead Redemption 2)

I'm not sure about billboards worldwide exactly, but look at the right hand side column on Spider-Vice's Rockstar Time, from 31st January 2013 onwards, when the delay from Spring to Fall was first announced for GTA V, we got tons of stuff from Rockstar between then and actual release:

 

delay announced and confirmed release date in January

screenshots in March

character trailers, official boxart and artwork in April

magazine previews in May

collector's edition announced in May

gameplay trailers, more artwork and screenshots in July

game rated in July

mural in LA in August

website launched in August

GTA Online reveal details in August

achievements found in August

Game goes gold in August

...then into September, the month of release, with more official trailers and previews

 

And all this was a game that was already guaranteed to be a success and make a billion because it was a new GTA!

 

Do we have to consider that Rockstar has scaled back drastically on releasing this kind of stuff for their games from now on? Or maybe that we'll be waiting until the actual release date is announced before it begins? All that promo stuff happened within about 8 months, and sure most of it was closer to the actual release date, but even that was after a year of silence. Even the Game Informer info drop came 2 months before the delay announcement.

 

I think I just convinced myself a delay is coming... lol

 

OK, so now I feel we're close to decoding Rockstar's latest marketing strategy.

 

Basically, it's "No info released until two months after announcement of the game delay."

Things are still cool so long as R* has already timed a RDR2 burst a few weeks before T2's May conference call. Was the same with the original announcement.

Take Two Q4 earnings call has been set to 23rd of May

Also I did not believe they wont show anything in April Im still confident they will release a short teaser for E3 in any sort of way before the earnings for q4 and forecast for the new fiscal year will be released

I think E3 has to be our goal. It still feels ages away, another possible 2 months of nothing and our impatience is already bursting at the seams, but surely something has to come by then? June would mean there's only 3 months until Fall 2017 begins and surely they wouldn't only leave it that short to market this game? They don't have to sell it to us, our response will be huge, but surely they still have to sell it to the masses of casual gamers who don't follow news and gaming sites hardcore like we do?

 

I feel myself saying "surely" a lot about Rockstar, but they can't just ever be predicted anymore

 

All I can say is ... WHAT if R* is doing a huge, exclusive artwork on the Figueroa hotel, literally days before E3 starts? I could imagine the forums exploding of excitement!

Call of Duty is quite possibly the most well known video game franchise in the world along with GTA. RDR2's going to be a huge success no doubt about it, but don't be so surprised CoD's getting an insane amount of coverage right now considering how popular AND mainstream it is. And Battlefront? It's Star Wars. It was also helped massively by the fact it was debuted during a big SW event.

 

Also, speaking of mainstream, don't underestimate just how mainstream gaming is these days. Everyone and their mother is on Facebook or Twitter and there's pages and profiles on there that talk nonstop about video games and do half the marketing for game developers these days, and that's not accounting for the countless other ways you can and do hear about games. Yes, we aren't the people Rockstar's advertising is designed to catch the eye of, but at the top, top level (which Rockstar are at) marketing is as much about making games feel prestigious than simply letting people know they exist. The internet is everywhere now and if you're a gamer you'll hear about the biggest games of the year no matter what you do or where you visit, so lot of the really big marketing campaigns now are there to make you feel like you just can't miss out. The billboards, the TV ads, the murals, the promotions, the whole song and dance, it's there to make you think "damn, all this talk probably means I should pick this up" just as much as it is to make you aware it exists.

 

As for the perceived lack of hype surrounding RDR2 right now else where on the internet? Whaddya expect them to talk about? No one was talking about Call of Duty: WW2 two weeks ago but now there's stuff to talk about everyone's going nuts. Same thing will happen when Rockstar get going.

FINALLY someone that gets it!! All of these rockstar fanboys saying that it's the most anticipated game of 2017 is wrong imo

That why parent company T2 does not have an estimated sales for the game they just want to be surprised. For sure though, RDR2 will not sell 75 million copies like GTA V nor will it break records but some analysts putting sales at 15-20 million copies which will be Insane for the RDR Franchise.

Of course everyone who knows GTA is but since rockstar doesn't go to e3 etc their not that well known to people who don't play games.. also I'm not saying that they don't have any more followers but I think blizzard is more well known compared to rockstar games.. also those 30 million followers doesn't really mean anything... Look at the post date, it's from 2016. Considering Take Two made no big announcement at last year's E3 it's safe to say the post is bogus.

 

But if you pay attention, he says in E3 2016 the game that will be announced will have no relationship with the Bully 2, and he was right, I'm just a little suspicious of concept arts

Personally i would want a new IP, or a L.A. Noire 2 or another Manhunt. Bully was corny to me. Rdr2 regardless of what, will do record-breaking numbers just because Quality beats Quantity any day of the week. Once marketing ramps up and the official trailer is everywhere and people know a little more. There's is no doubt RDR2 will be a juggernaut, T2 or R* isn't worried about C.O.DWW2, or Battlefront2 why because they're publishers don't stress quality like T2.

If Rockstar wanted to release any new info they would already have done so, but they learned from GTA V, fans were super annoying about hype wanting to see more and more info, trailers and screens, so later fans seem to be rather dissapointed a bit with the game, so Rockstar realized they have sh*t fans so they decided to stay more silent about next projects, so summer is the best bet for new info for now.

I love this comment but one thing GTA aint RDR, however the Rockstar brand is the most recognised and most beloved in gaming. Their marketing department is just playing with us

 

exactly it should be the opposite, the way they treated GTA is how they should treat RDR since they need to draw more fan interest.

Didn't i mention before that things change like EVERYDAY in the gaming industry? Rockstar originally wanted to make games for the Wii U but ultimately decided against it. There's more evidence to show his credibility out there but i'm too lazy. Where's that 4Chan leak btw? And what does that WiiU information have to do with what we're discussing? R* voted against the WiiU extremely early on in its lifetime because the sales were lackluster. The Switch is selling like hotcakes though..so whats the reasoning there?

So from the first trailer it looks like our character is part of a posse. I think R* will give us something like convoy riding from TLAD but instead of riding on motorcycles together everyone is on horses.
