Red Dead Redemption 2: Discussion & Speculation (Part 1)

You guys, take the hi res image and mess with the light and the contrast and things. And a clown appears by the rockstar logo.

Seriously try it!

This is what I got:

https://postimg.org/image/7qk5fdhud/#

You mean you got absolutely nothing?

There's already people talking about how it'll look and they're being incredibly unrealistic about it. There's going to be a lot of sad faces, even if this game is objectively the best game ever.

That sounds like me. Is that fort render I posted really that astronomical?

If it was you that posted the image of The Order, then yes, you.

It was me. And, to quote myself:

"For a similar comparison, look at Uncharted 3 (2011) and GTA V. 2 year gap, V looks more impressive."

It's not at all fanciful to assume Rockstar is capable of matching the visuals of 2015's linear spectacles. They've done it before and this time will likely be no different. Especially when you consider the inordinate amount of time they've spent working on the game.

I'd be perfectly fine with GTA V's PC max settings graphics + improved animations and motion capture (seriously, after Mafia 3 every other dev needs to step up their facial animation game HARD).

Not to say the motion capture wasn't great, it totally was. But I'm saying they can only go up from where they ended with GTA V's tech. And that sh*t is exciting to me.

Unless they repeat that whole "the code is tangled spaghetti" nonsense that happened with Redemption. Then we're f*cked without The Benz™.

Hmm. Well, I'd argue that it's fanciful to think that a game that uses small, discreet areas in a linear fashion with very little other than scripted activity going on is going to be much easier to make look spectacular than an open world game with a huge draw distance and all manner of things going on in the world at any given time.

Of course I want them to make it look as beautiful as possible, but I think it's very unrealistic to think an open world game is, currently, going to look as good as a linear game with small areas. I hope they prove me wrong, but I suspect they won't.

Signatures are dumb anyway.

They really need to post the announcement... :p

Knowing Rockstar and its obsession with Wednesday, just look at when RDR trailers and GTAV presented, I think it's obvious that we'll know on the Wednesday 19th.

Guys, no company, especially Rockstar would do this because of a simple brand change. The hell. Just look at the old RDR artwork and you'll see the pattern in the background is the exact same. Also, they would not start replacing all images on their social networks and their websites for a GTAO DLC two weeks a way, they haven't even done this for things like heists. Sure, sure, it seems surreal but there's no question this is Red Dead...

Exactly. Too much hype for Remastered or just SP DLC GTA? I bet no.

It will be a new full game.

They can't just keep the splash page forever. We're seeing something today, maximum tomorrow. This is just like GTA V.

If it's like GTA V it will not be at all tomorrow. Rockstar Games first confirmed GTA V's existence on 25th of October 2011, we then got the official

on the 2nd of November 2011, a week later.

Just for example sake; Red Dead Redemption was first formally announced by Rockstar Games on the 3rd of February 2009 and released its

on the 6th of May 2009.

If it's anything like GTA V I would expect a trailer or full article posted on Rockstar, on the 23rd of this month(A week later). It's already confirmed(?) Halloween DLC is coming out this month too, so I doubt Rockstar would post anything else before more information on the new Red Dead. This would fit in well for another Sunday 30th October announcement, 1 day before Halloween about GTAO Halloween DLC, and give a whole week for the trailer/article/whatever to be seen.

However we're still waiting for the formal announcement which was done the same day or the next day of the teaser. The trailer yes, next week I guess.

There is a reason why the Event Week for GTA Online lasts 2 weeks. This weak is all about Red Dead.

Apart from lighting, RDR looks graphically better than V in my book. The desolate nature of the lands of RDR gave R* the ability to stream more on the screen and this allowed the wilderness to look more real and to be full of atmosphere. Personally, I've no worries in regard to whether I will be amazed at how the new Red Dead game will look, because I'm sure that I will be. I'm hoping that part of the map will take place in a region that's dominated by high-altitude and extended mountain ranges. Although Redemption had some of that, it's nowhere near what I'm looking forward to. V was highly disappointing in this regard since the mountains were more like one large mass than an actual mountain range that extends for miles in all directions and with different layers.

If it was you that posted the image of The Order, then yes, you.

I only posted a Bloodborne screenshot, which has similar graphics to The Order so that might be what you mean

It was canyonjack that posted the image I'm talking about, but that pic you posted is pretty unrealistic too.

Let's be honest, people. It's going to look a bit better than V on CG consoles, but that's about it. With the decreased number of buildings they'll be able to notch up the detail on the landscape, but I don't expect this to push any boundaries graphically - RDRedemption pushed the PS3 to the limits, to the point that it actually killed two of my PS3s. I don't see this being a console breaker, but it'll look good enough. The main thing is capturing the atmosphere that RDRedemption had, and from the hint we've had from V's countryside and desert, I don't think we have anything to worry about there.

The only reason I ever posted that fort render, was because it was Old West-themed. We should declare that render irrelevant and forget about it.

We should just compare apples to apples. What PS4 game is most similar game to RDR2? The Witcher 3. And The Witcher 3 looks friggen amazing, so if RDR3 is on par with that then I'd be satisfied. Although RDR3 should surpass it by a tab because its a slightly newer game.

Remember that social media was smaller back then, GTA V was announced 5 years ago.

Nope. The Rockstar website was set similarly to how this announcement is, the front page was a GTA V logo for 1 week until the trailer came out on the 2nd of Nov. No formal announcement until the 3rd of November. Here is the article: https://www.rockstargames.com/newswire/article/19471/grand-theft-auto-v-official-announcement.html

But the thing is, V is a very different genre. You can't compare a game where you can fly, go 200KM/H in a car etc. to a game where you're on horseback at a moderate pace. Thats where The Witcher 3 comes handy. Its just a rough parallel comparison.

Also, you're saying its not possible for RDR3 to meet or exceed the graphically quality of The Witcher 3? Rockstar has been making game engines quite a bit longer than CD Projekt

Yep, boy howdy! I remember that week well. It was sweet, sweet torture! There was SO MUCH speculation that week. I remember the prevailing theory was a return to Las Ventures because of the "V" for Ventures, but also it looked like currency (gambling), and also Roman numeral 5 for GTA 5. Man, it went on, and on, and on. Every day, everyone was all like, "any minute now!" or "I'm sure they'll do an official announcement tomorrow," but days came, and days went. Hopefully we don't have to wait much more than a week this time. Maybe not til the next T2 investors meeting?

Nahh I don't think they'll exceed 24 hours with the splash screen but we'll see.

iirc they only post stuff on Tuesdays and Thursdays generally

Normally yes, but they posted all this on a sunday. I don't think they're doing it like they're usually do it this time

I did not say that at all. Please, indicate where I said that.

I think you're missing the point. The point here is not what the game contains and features. It's about the engine running the game.

Comparing the engines on the basis that they both have open landscapes and horses is nonsensical. Comparing The Witcher 3 to Red Dead Next is oranges and apples. Different engine, different company, different game, different dev team, etc.

Now, comparing a game that will almost certainly be using the same engine is much more fair, because the engines will be, for the most part, identical, other than what they put into it. So, saying that V and RDNext will look comparatively similar makes sense, because... I can't believe I'm saying this again... it's the same game engine behind it regardless of the planes etc.

I'm really not sure what's so difficult to understand here.

Signatures are dumb anyway.

I don't think that we will go beyond this week without an official press release that will finally confirm a new Red Dead game. There's no reason to compare the situation to 2011's V.

If you look IV and V you can see huge differences. And check Ps4 V's cloth textures, skin shaders, lighting effects, godrays in forest etc. All of them weak for this generation because V old gen based game. Compare Black Flag and Unity you can see how they improve the things im talking about.

This will just be the announcement they had originally planned to release at the last E3 convention, but had to hold back on it due to the Paris or Nice thing (or Orlando).

Whatever they release, it's going to be a good 18months before we see the game.
