Red Dead Redemption 2: Discussion & Speculation (Part 1)

It really would be pretty f*cking stupid for them to delay it after releasing only 1 trailer... can't see the delay happening to be honest

Welp, so much for any RDR2 info today. But we were clutching on straws to be honest.

Maybe we'll see a Tiny Riders (Horse edition race) in RDR2 in the future.

"The truth about Rockstar marketing, he said, is that anything is possible. Had you not seen it all from Grand Theft Auto II and thereby bled it of its strangeness it would appear to you for what it is, a hat trick in a medicine show, a fevered dream, a trance bepopulate with chimeras having neither analogue nor precedent, an itinerant carnival, a migratory tentshow whose ultimate destination after many a pitch in many a mudded field is unspeakable and calamitous beyond reckoning."

Cormac McCarthy, Blood Meridian

In seriousness, I recently reread the masterpiece that is Blood Meridian to anyone who even has a passing interest in the frontier genre, the relevant historical period, philosophy, literature or simply desires one hell of a captivating experience, I can't overstate a recommendation. The literary critic Harold Bloom, about whom I'm otherwise quite sceptical, called it the 'ultimate western' and that nothing subsequently could surpass it of the genre so it's quite fitting then that Red Dead Redemption was about the erasure of the western, the unclaimed and its attendant possibilities, hopeful and horrific, by modernity, centralisation and hierarchy. I have no doubt that Red Dead Redemption 2 will be an incredible game with peerless craftsmanship and care (it's not going to some online-centric series of adversary modes you sillies... {breaks out into an nervous sweat}) but I do wonder how Rockstar can surpass the singular thematic narrative of the original, especially given the near-certain step back chronologically.

So since line sitters are a thing and people pay other people to wait in line for you. Can we hire people to take all of the disappointment for us so we won't have to deal with it?

If tomorrow really is the day we get info I'm so excited I even got the tree out

Happy Red Dead Redemption 2 info day eve

Might as well put the tree back in the closet and who wants my disappointment? It's free

By setting it in a different time, with a different theme. It's why I'm so in favour of it being set during the Civil War - because, thematically, it would come at a very relevant point socially. There are huge divisions in society, especially American society, as there were back then, and forcing the player to take sides in a conflict like that, at a time of such high ideology, would be markedly different to the narrative of Redemption.

Theres no way R* would announce a game in October with a launch window of the next year just to wait 8 more months to finally speak about it. They arent that crazy

The thing is, they are, and they can do whatever they want / need to do.

Take a look at "Rockstar Time" created by our own Spider-Vice https://cld.pt/dl/download/362cfe53-5e6b-4954-b7af-a5e59cf5fbc0/RockstarTimeBeta.html

GTA V was announced in late October 2011 with a trailer, they then waited 8/9 months to release 2 screenshots in an A&A post in July 2012 and then a further screenshot series in the August 2012 which was 10 months after announcement, and then nothing again until November/December when GameInformer and other websites had the big info drop and they revealed it would be out in "Spring 2013", which was a whole year after announcement. After this we had some screenshots and such and then in the January 2013 it was delayed until the September.

In other words, sure a lot of other factors might have been involved in GTA V's delay and it's not going to be exactly the same for RDR2, but we have no idea whats going on or whats planned behind the scenes and they'll do what they want. Essentially we waited almost 2 years for GTA V to come around, even longer for next-gen and PC, and here we are 6 months after RDR2 announcement crying for info :p They didn't need to care about it back then, they don't need to now. I would LOVE to see some screenshots, I don't even care about a delay because I know it'd be worth the wait, but no amount of adoration is going to make them budge.

Being a Rockstar fan is hard work sometimes.

GTAV was never scheduled to release a year after. Thats my point. By E3, they'll only have like 4-5 months to go into FULL FLEDGED marketing. A release date, special editions, trailers, previews, gameplay series, etc. Doesnt seem plausible and Im hoping Im right

Bethesda did that with Fallout 4 and did ok.

Yeah but could tease something to investors which will then boost their stock.

That's not how it works. They won't reveal anything during the call, we went through it all with GTA V. Any time they get a question that's basically "when can we expect RDR2 information?" the answer is always "We're very excited about RDR2 but Rockstar will talk about that when they're ready." They're shareholders on a publicly available call (which T2 are fully aware will have fans listening in on), they're not board members who actually need to know when the stuff is about to ramp up.

We’re not going to announce it. We’re not going to announce when we’re going to announce it. And we’re not going to announce the strategy about announcing it or about when we’re going to announce it either, or about the announcement strategy surrounding the announcement of the strategy. - Strauss Zelnick

The most they could ever say is when it is releasing, but that definitely won't be before Rockstar announces it themselves first.

Man, April looked so good, yet I think it's going to be the most disappointing month per the poll! :p

It's a shame since a lot of us was hoping for something this April. Ah well. The hype train will keep on chugging along, maybe a little slower now though.

Bit off topic, but I've got a little nostalgic tonight. Starting listening to some of the RDR soundtrack. Love this song.

Beautiful song, and you can never forget the scene when it first played as well.

How could you? We're all reminded of it every time the topic turns to RDR1 in any gaming circles.

I don't expect them to (cause it's Rockstar and not Volition) but I hope they don't try and replicate that moment in RDR2, would feel cheap and diminish the magic from the original for me.

Since we are regularly reminded here that we Forum members are but a microscopic subset of the potential fanbase, we can probably say that 2.8 million people will be disappointed next month.

Rockstar marketing is the Nigel West Dickens of the video game world.

Time for the townspeople to rise up. :p

I gotta admit, I'm kinda lost. Why is there so much hype for RDR2 right now? Did I miss something?

Because we're all missing the unrequited anguish of the GTAV info drought, and we want to fully experience it again.

:^: I get on the accursed internet after work, and see the RDR2 Forum storm.

Starting with a click on the latest page, then working through it backwards, starting with posts full of disappointment, rage and hate, scrolling back to a happier time of hopelessly naive optimism, 12 hours ago.

And I thought I was being somewhat realistic to Rockstar standards by voting on April.

May I risk June? E3? No?

Just finished GTA 5 for the second time, RDR2 has the potential to be one of the best games ever if they carry over what made GTA 5 and RDR so good. Fingers crossed that RDR2 is going to be another masterpiece
