Red Dead Redemption 2: Discussion & Speculation (Part 1)

Every major developer adopts the "less is more" strategy when promoting their games when they can. Developers are gamers too and they know deep down gamers want to know as little as possible when going into a game. No one wants spoilers, everyone wants surprises. That's what makes a good game special. When you see a new IP launched you'll often see them go mad with gameplay videos but they reveal less for the sequels. Instead of relying on the hype of players knowing what they can do they instead rely on players hyping up what they think they can do in-game - because a lot of what they know is already established (it being a sequel and all). It works and it works well and Rockstar are not the only developer who do it. It's done in other industries too.

 

It has nothing to do with laziness and to suggest it does is pretty naive.

So lemme understand this. They justify total info blackout by saying that fans don't want spoilers, and yet in the last two months before game release they blast out trailers, gameplay, screenshots, interviews, magazine covers, and spoil it all anyway.

 

They're just being assholes to their dedicated fans.

 

 

They justify total info black out because the game doesn't even have a release date. Of course as they get closer to the actual date they're gonna ramp up their advertising. It is nothing unusual in any industry. They spoil no where near as much as other developers do for their games and post release (or when we're not all grinding our teeth waiting for anything) fans will almost always be grateful that they didn't spoil X/Y/Z. You can bet once they start advertising and promoting that the complaints about the lack of information and claims of lazyness or arrogance will be gone completely.

 

It also needs to be said that this is nothing new for Rockstar. They've been this way for a long, long time now and we put up with it then and we'll put up with it now. It's a bit silly to call them lazy or arseholes about it.

I don't think they are lazy or assholes for their silence, they are my favourite developer after all and we wouldn't be following them so religiously if they weren't and I know all this is worth it in the end, but I do still find it hard to think of a good reason why we can't see a few screenshots or have some artworks at this stage. They don't contain spoilers, it's not for share holders, it's not to create hype or to remind us the game exists, they're just for us to enjoy while we wait.

 

I'd be fine with even some map screenshots. You don't even need to show me a character. I am pretty sure they did it with GTA V, just show me the world. Get me excited to explore it, remind me its coming. I'll take anything at this point. Show me a picture of a tumbleweed rolling through a desert I don't care.

I looked at this persons (his name Tor Sigurdson) is LinkedIn profile he worked as a mission scripter on GTA V at Rockstar North for over 3 years. It also said that he worked on Red Dead Redemption 2 as a Senior Open World Designer from January 2015 till July 2015.

Not really don't be stupid. Its Celebration in Orlando which is a big Star Wars convention where Friday and Saturday is and was going to see the first The Last Jedi trailer and Battlefront 2 details. Obviously the Sony BF2 ad leaked but everything else will be revealed in Saturday so it would have no bearing if Rockstar were going to reveal anything given they rarely post on Fridays and Saturdays.

 

Keep in mind Fallout 4 and Mass Effect Andromeda didn't announce or start their marketing until less than 5 months before release and with devs and publishers favoring the Fallout 4 approach, nothing is out of the ordinary here.

i just realized a lot of people posting in here wasn't on this site for all the GTAV pre release crap. this thread feels the exact same as those threads did lol. all the rage will become hate soon enough .

I've been a GTA Forum member since 2004 about 2 weeks after GTA San Andreas came out so I know I'm not one of them. This was on my very first original account back in the day that I forgot my email address to. But I completely agree with your post!

 

 

 

Back in the year before GTA-SA, I also had an old GTA Forum account that I can't recover. But what I remember from that time was what fun the GTA Forum was, with people talking about the game, the trailer, screenshots of vehicles that Rockstar released.

 

It was full GTA-SA immersion. I couldn't get the beautiful sound of the song in that first GTA-SA trailer out of my head, and I didn't want to. That great fun was what hooked me on the GTA Forums.

 

It seems like things are different now. It seems like Rockstar hates us. But maybe this is just an artifact of the long development times for HD games. It's time for me to trot out my old graph of GTA release dates, so we can see the vast gulfs of time between games:

 

 

Maybe there are so many years of dead space between games, that it just seems like Rockstar has adopted the brilliant "less is more" marketing strategy, but really it's just our perception of time.

 

Or maybe Rockstar really is doing "less is more," and they do hate us, and they're assholes.

This would be the right moment to do so, and like many of you said, it'll match the seventh anniversary of RDR.

I know we had those emails that seem to point to E3 as being a big source of info for RDR2 and as much as I'd love for it to be true, I really doubt we'll see RDR2 in a big way in any shape or form at Sony's conference. E3 conferences have become very exclusive heavy over the past few years. It's where Sony has been thriving for a while now and they have some massive exclusives coming up over the next year or so that have already been announced and they'll be packing their E3 conference with them from start to finish - it's how you "win" E3 these days. I'd expect them to close with gameplay from the new Spiderman game - I doubt we'll see anything about RDR2 other than a bundle announcement and them reiterating that RDR:O will have exclusive content on PS4. But if Rockstar do want to show up at E3 to do any sort of reveal, they are one of those multi platform developers that you make room for in your conference so even though I doubt it... We'll see...

http://steamcharts.com/app/271590 this is somewhat of a good gauge. GTA V is still is at #5 most concurrent players of steam games.
