GTA III compatibility mode glitch help request

Question

glenster

I'm working on a starter save for the latest Steam version of GTA "III" and

got to about 8% complete when I realized I was playing on compatibility mode for
98/ME (I guess from a recent previous installation). When I turn off compat-
ibility mode I'm at 0% and all the pickups disappear from Claude's Portland save
place?! Is there a fix to have my 8% work done without compatibility mode?

Are you sure the correct save file is loaded? Save files for the PC version of the game do not vary between versions, nor should enabling compatibility mode have any effect on the content of the save data.

If you're having trouble with compatibility, I recommend installing SilentPatch. It fixes a lot of little quirks with GTA III.

I only have one save file in the folder but, yes, it certainly is happening. I never heard of it before. I have Windows 10 64 bit and the latest Steam version of "III." The Read Me file for the Silent Patch for "III" doesn't mention it but I could try it as a remedy

Win98 compatibility mode relocates Documents path, so the save you're reading is just a different save.

Try looking around those directories - I'm not sure where compatibility mode-based Win98 stores them, but it's probably a similar path to those:

Alternately, try looking in %localappdata%\VirtualStore.

As far as I remember it's in C:\Users\Public\Documents.

So the one with 0% done is in the regular place and the one with 8% done is at
This PC > Local Disk (C:) > Users > Public > Public Documents > GTA3 User Files
Thanks!
I guess I'll supply that one and just tell people to run the .exe on compatibility
mode for Windows 98 / Windows ME.

Or you can just relocate the save to the "C:\Users\username\Documents\GTA3 User Files" directory and run the game without Win98 compatibility mode. The contents of the save file will be the same whether you're using compatibility mode or not.
