Michael and his family

Hello everyone and I have a simple question.

Does Michael De Santa love his family? In the beginning of the game he doesn't show compassion and is really depressed and is really, really sarcastic (for example: if Michael sees Jimmy in the early game, Jimmy will sometimes say "I never say that I love you, dad" and Michael will reply "Never is plenty"). But as the game progresses, Michael shows more love and the kids start to call him and say that they miss him and are tired of Fabien. After Reuniting the Family the whole family actually shows a lot more love towards each other, and Jimmy and Tracey will be in less trouble and Amanda will also be seen drinking less. Michael will also be seen playing Righteous Slaughter with Jimmy, or returning from a bike ride with Jimmy when switching to him. Michael will also respond more compassionate and way less sarcastic, and vice versa.

Michael loves them, but not for all of the right reasons. It's because of his family that he had to fake his death in order to escape his past. While he has genuine feelings for them, there's still a part of him that misses the "old" Michael, the one who could tackle a score and be done with it. But now that he has a family, he's grown more cautious, and more of his life is on the line as a result, further increasing the pressure during heists.

In the end, it was his "revival" that made him upset with his family. It wasn't because he hated them, it was because he missed his old life. But now that it's back, he's returned to the cycle, and at the end of the game he's back with his family. This symbolizes his consistent struggle with being a family man, while at the same time taking scores as a thief.

Yes, indeed. But you can clearly see how Michael's relationship with his family and vice versa changes. I enjoy playing as Michael way more after Reuniting the Family than in the beginning, because the family is closer together and they love each other more, it is just more pleasant. I also like it how Michael says as he is walking past some prostitutes when you sometimes switch to him "I'm happily married now".

No he doesn't love them, this f*cker would eat his own kids. He uses them as an excuse to backstab his buddies since he's really just a shallow snake who (according to Franklin) has burned every motherf*cker he ever known. It's all about his own survival.

Real love.

That's at the users choice.

I personally really really like Michael, I don't really know why but I feel for him. Yeah sure he betrayed his friends but it was for his own ass and also his family. I can see how and why he done it. On the surface it's shallow, and I think the reason he's such an asshole at the beginning to them is, well, he betrayed his friends, heck one died! Just to make sure they were safe, and they take him for granted. So I can see why he's always in a bad mood, his old life's gone, he has no friends left (they think he's dead after all) and his family don't take much to do with him unless it involves him handing over cash for this and that.

I like Michael too. And eventually the family reunites and Michael kind of gets his dream of "living the dream, be a dad" and "the other stuff" (bank heists). I also like to hang out with Jimmy and Amanda because I like their conversations. Apparently Amanda wants to teach yoga and tennis to the homeless!

Haha yeah I've probably spent an unhealthy ammount of time as Michael doing nothing more than just lazing about the house/garden. Since, if I was him, that's about all I would do. I wouldn't feel the need to go out all that much!

Yeah, I did all of those missions ("The Good Husband", "Doting Dad" and "Parenting 101"). Did you know that if you do not help Tracey in that mission (Doting Dad) that she will be seen drunk on the stairwell asking for money?

Only played through the entire game once and was always the good husband/dad (or at least trying to be) so I've never saw that scene!

Yeah, but I've seen it in gameplay on youtube. I also never go to the strip club and such as Michael.

he may seem like a callous asshole but if he didnt love or atleast care for his family in the mission Meltdown where Devin holds Amanda and Tracy hostage he would of probably just stayed at the premier and Micheal is shown to be very conflicted with wanting to be a good father but still wanting the adrenaline rush from doing heists, which makes his attitude at the start of the game with him being very depressed makes sense then suddenly his pulled back into the life he missed and craved so much, which probably made him feel alive again and a lot happier, I doubt Micheal would return to how he was like at the start of the game knowing he pulled of the biggest heist in american history and also having Trevor and Franklin to share in the memories.

The development of his character through the game I believe is what makes him so interesting.

Yes he went from a depressed asshole to a happier, semi-retired good dad who hit the UD

Michael got a stripper pregnant and then married her because he thought it was the right thing. The only reason they are not divorced is because of WITSEC... or just pure stupidity. Once a cheater, always a cheater. And any wife who cheats to get back at someone, is too stupid to support herself so she stays with them. As for the kids, those little punks, I am sure he loves them, but has no idea how to raise them especially now that they are older. He screwed this all up. Never fall in love with a stripper.

It's surprisingly realistic and very common.

Well, I guess that's kind of right, but in the end, Michael and Amanda do love each other (Amanda says in an email that she wants to bury Michael when the time comes), and they realise that they will be stuck together no matter what, and eventually the family does show respect and love towards each other after Reuniting the Family.

I hate them, i really do ! Jimmy and Amanda are the reason Michael returns too crime but they never own it, it's bitch sh*t, IMO, how dare they judge him !!!

if jimmy doesn't buy that car selfishly (he doesn't need a car that expensive for a start) (and does a deal without even looking into it properly,) michael doesn't meet franklin,

if amanda isn't a whore michael doesn't pull the house down and get into debt with a mob boss...

it really is all their fault when you think about it, As much as i like to hate on tracey she's the only one who doesn't really do anything, you wouldn't know about the porn guys or fame or shame if jimmy didn't snitch... just saying....

actually, if you look at it like that, Jimmy and Michael's family did a good thing because Michael felt depressed because he thought that retirement with his family was exactly the thing for him, which it wasn't, as he felt bad because he snitched out all his former friends. Because Jimmy bought that car, Michael met Franklin, they pull down Madrazo's house, they rob Vangelico, Michael reunites with Trevor, etc, etc, until they pull off the Big Score. After the story, Michael is less sarcastic and less asshole-y to his family (and in general) because he knows that he met new friends and that he robbed the UD with them, and did not snitch anyone.

I really like how Michael bonds with Jimmy, or wakes up from a "fun" night with Amanda when you switch to Michael.

Hello everyone and I have a simple question.

Does Michael De Santa love his family? In the beginning of the game he doesn't show compassion and is really depressed and is really, really sarcastic

Anybody who has their own family and is living a normal, blue-collar or "not silver spoon" life will tell you for families and people that love each other, this see-sawing is exactly what always happens. Mad at each other and bitter, etc. one day. But always returning to the family unit because you love each other and are willing to "always try to make it better."

If we discard something the second it's broken, rather than fixing it, we will never know the value of perseverance or "togetherness." :)

Yeah, only Michael and his family don't really discard anything. But I see what you mean, family is family. I mean Michael thinks his kids are useless, but you can clearly see his love for the, as he slowly puts Jimmy behind him when Trevor visits for the first time, Meltdown is also a good mission to see the family's love for one another.

Hmmm, it's obvious that Michael loves Amanda and his kids, as he feels more miserable without him and as he protects them during "Meltdown". Michael also says that he loves them a lot after te story. His kids and wife also show more affection, for example, when Michael interacts with them at his house, or when you switch to him, or when you do hangouts.

What still riddles me is why Michael constantly says "don't ever get kids" or "don't ever get married". Does he feel bad that he was very asshole-y towards his family in the beginning of the game and does he try to tell Franklin not to make the same mistakes of being an asshole dad early. Anyway, it's obvious that Michael, Amanda and their kids are progressing well.
