The Official Self-Actualization FM and the Journey Thread

Self-Actualization_FM.pngTheJourney.png

Strangely enough, I didn't find any topic related to the two stations, although you can notify me if I'm mistaken. Anyway, welcome to the official Self-Actualization FM and the Journey appreciation thread. I'm sure some people out there have the Journey and Self-Actualization FM as one of their favorite radio stations in IV + EFLC.

When I first played GTA IV, I initially overlooked the Journey, aswell as Self-Actualization FM when I played Episodes from Liberty City. Though, eventually, I grew more interest in the music for those two stations. Now, both of these stations are some of my personal favorite radio stations in the series. I'm glad that R* decided to include two stations like this, as they introduced me to ambient, chillout & new age music. There's not a single track in the Journey that I disliked, although I kinda think that Self-Actualization FM's music is meh. The Journey's music is perfect for a very relaxing drive through the streets of Liberty City, or flying in a helicopter, enjoying the skyline. One of my favorite tracks on the Journey is "Pruit Igoe", which played in the first trailer of the game.

Self actualization sucks but The Journey rules, Pruit Igoe is just a classic, makes me think in fluorescent blue dongs.

The DJ of the journey is pretty special because it is the first in the series that's not a human, is a machine. Time to time it says some meta statements about the fact IV is a videogame (something like we're always stuck in the same place or something) i thought that was pretty original.

The Journey is the best, I never liked Self Actualization. I tried listening to it but the DJ annoyed me.

I loved The Journey, waaay better than Self Actualization imho...

Fun fact: Since the Aphex Twin song doesn't have a title, I named it Copulation With a Cute Guy's Corpse on my phone, and other musical devices...

Yeah the name "Copulation With a Cute Guy's Corpse" for a peaceful journey track totally isn't edgy lol.

I didn't listen to them ever. Those Stations are just not my thing, to be honest.

I like The Journey, should really listen to it more, it adds an atmosphere to just cruising around, how it plays the IV theme tune is great, heading to a destination during a mission with it playing puts you in the zone. I kind of see the journey as IV's answer to the dynamic score of V.

Not a big fan of Self Actualization fm, maybe I should give it more of a chance though.

I like both stations but since I don't play TLaD and TBoGT on the EFLC pack, I don't have Self-Actualization as well as RamJam FM and Vice City FM, I wish there was some mod to add them to vanilla GTA IV though.

Anyway I think The Journey is better, mostly because it has some great relaxing songs that are perfect for cruising around the city, either during a beautiful day or when it's raining like hell, it's nice sometime to stop your car and just listen to the music while watching the pedestrians walking around, talking on their cellphones, seeing cars passing by and cops running after someone, the musics fit with the environment nicely...

Also the DJ of Self-Actualization is part of the Children of the Mountain cult. :p

In fact, one of the songs on The Journey ("Remote Viewing") was created by Tangerine Dream, who also created V's score. That was always my favorite song on the station, as well.

The Journey is truly epic. It's the station I listened to the most when I first played IV. It's one of those things that truly set the game apart as an artistic piece and not just another cheap disposable entertainment.

In most games, music like that is reserved for atmospheric boss fights, preferably with gigantic monster enemies. Here it's just like... Here you go, we crafted this collection with love, we hope you enjoy.

BTW a few years ago I got ahold of the Koyaanisqatsi movie where Pruit Igoe comes from. I still wonder whether the intent was that the viewer is supposed to be high when watching it. I suspect this is the case.

I, as an ambient composer myself, consider both of these radios a huge influence on me. I just love them. The Journey brang me into some of the better musicians I've ever heard in my life, while Self Actualization had some funkier stuff, but it was still very lovely. I enjoy psychodelic music ;)

I love listening to The Journey when I'm driving an Oracle and the weather is either foggy or rainy.

Do you guys think the Journey tracklist would be okay for IRL driving or is that suicide?

Copulation With a Cute Guy's Corpse

Why the f*ck I clicked on view post.

Why...

In case you wonder, I chose ignoring SPC's posts. Is the sanest thing you can do in this forum and I'm completely sure I'm not alone in this.

The Journey is awesome, and I barely know Self Actualization. Haven't touched EFLC in years.

There's nothing quite like driving through Dukes and Bohan on a stormy night while listening to the Journey. I get chills just thinking about it.

Why would it be suicide?

Listening to chillout music while driving lowers concentration. Not sure about other people but I've noticed it. A few months ago a group of musicologist (yea it's a real thing) published a 'perfect tracklist' for driving and it's mostly just pop and dance stuff. Some of which I also tend to listen to while driving.

That said, driving for 2 hours on an empty highway at night... I guess I'll go burn The Journey CD.

The Journey and Self Actualization is and always will be my favorite station of GTA Saga, it was a good choice doing an ambient station (thank you Rockstar). I hope on next-GTA will make a similar station like my favs, also I jumped and danced happy when I heard The Orb, Autechre and Pete Namlook on Self Actualization, and the same case when I listened Aphex Twin, Global Communication, Steve Roach, Jean Michel Jarre and Tangerine Dream on The Journey.

My favorite of Self Actualization, "Bike" by Autechre:

and my favorite of The Journey, "Z Twig" by Aphex Twin, named in the game as "Selected Ambient Works Vol. II, CD2, TRK5", also featured on Niko Bellic's trailer:

A curious thing about Self-Actualization: Larry Heard is the real name of Mr. Fingers, who also has a song on SF-UR: "Can You Feel It?". As Larry features a song on Self Actualization called "Cosmology Myth"

Can you throw up the link to that "perfect" tracklist?

The Journey is the best radio station in GTAIV. It's too bad V's sh*t soundtrack didnt have an ambient station. Thank God for the Spotify app on ps4.

Probably one of the dumbest things I've read. And I don't believe in any of those idiotic statistics. Listening to chill out music makes the driving experience more immersive. All I listen to these days is downtempo and chill so what are you on about?

It's not exactly the title. Aphex is a twisted mastermind and instead of naming the songs on the album (except for one), he gave a matching picture to each melody. The one featured on the Journey well... it has a picture of a Z-Twig, so that's why it was adopted as an unofficial title :p
