Shadow Eats away at frame rate

I have been silent about this for a while, but now I talk about this.

Shadows. They eat at my framerate. I hate that. How does such a simple option kill my framerate so much? Like, every other option is okay to use, but shadows, ohh nooo, that's waaay too much for machine to handle. Here's my specs.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 610 2GB

Intel i3 2130 @3.4GHz

8GB RAM

Windows 10

Like, what the f*ck? This machine should be able to most 7th gen games at good framerate, but this game just makes my frame rate choke for some reason. Now I'm stuck using some View and Draw Distance mod and my game just looks plain ugly. My machine can handle GTAV at 1280x720, but not GTAIV. I'm stuck with these settings

Textures - High

Reflection - Normal

Water - Normal

Shadows - OFF (ffs)

Is there some sort of optimization mod that could help me?

With those specs you won't be able to run the game that great. Even some high end systems won't run it that great, just depends what you have. I've also heard Windows 10 also causes problems with GTA IV can't confirm tho. I can get a constant 50 - 60+ fps at all times without mods all settings at the highest, to give you an idea here are my specs if you are looking to upgrade or just curious;

Intel core i5 4970k, GTX 970, 16gb ram, Windows 7.

Also try using the Auto Configure setting, restart the game and see how it plays out. Slowly adjust the settings. If this doesn't work then you will have to just upgrade or deal with the lag unfortunately. Try removing all mods too. Are you using any Commandlines?

Why do you think shadows are a simple option? Having shadows enabled means at least a couple more re-renderings of the whole scene and it's not like the game is well optimized or anything. Frankly on a GT 610 I'm surprised it runs well at all.

I had a similar problem with a 9800GT. It could handle the game in 1080p on max settings, but when shadows were enabled, it was causing all kinds of problems, such as tunnels being opaque from the outside, or some textures missing completely or loading in what's probably the lowest LOD. And sometimes they'd tank the framerate too.

I just played the game without shadows then. TBH anything below the highest shadow quality looks crap anyway and is not worth it. The game looks okay without them.

At the end, the game is bugged to hell and you never know what kind of settings you'll be able to run it with on a particular machine, if at all.
