They just know what they are doing. Just finished watching Season 3 last night. I think it's fair to say that there isn't a more fun show on television than Stranger Things. It isn't always the most coherent; it certainly doesn't always make the most sense; it isn't necessarily the best acted or best directed (although everyone involved does a fine job); but it is just so much fun. And, as you say, the blend of thrills and humour is spot on. The bit in the final episode when - after having ratcheted up the tension for the best part of an hour - Dustin and his girl suddenly break into the Neverending Story was one of the funniest TV moments in a long time; everyone's reactions were just priceless!
