What is the Longest Sniper Shot Possible?

Hello there everyone.

So recently I finished making a video, where in it, I break down the maths and did some tests to see if there was in fact a limit to how far you could shoot someone.
Turns out there is and I was wondering if someone might be able to verify this distance I calculated (possibly via the code) or if anyone has any extra knowledge?
Also, if you see any problems with the video or parts I didn't take into account, feel free to let me know.

I saw one really long shot on one of Dat Saintsfans Top 5 kill videos. The player was standing on the roof of Maze Bank and sniped his friend on Mount Chiliad. So I guess there is no limit?

There should be no limit. When someone's in a car, there's practically no limit (well, as far as the eye can see really).

 

So I see no reason why it shouldn't be possible - from a technological standpoint - for the game to allow us to snipe people who are on foot from ... Well, very long distances.

 

But for whatever reason, they're not allowing it. A shame really, could open up doors in a variety of areas, not just sniping.

Back on PS3 you could hit a helicopter at Vinewood sign from Maze Bank. Not sure if anything has changed.

Not sure what relevance a Single Player experiment has in the Online section, but the rendering distance online is not constant, so getting an accurate measurement of possible hits is nigh on impossible. The video obviously took some time and effort to do, so fair play to the author, but it means nothing to GTAO.

 

The longest shot I've been able to manage is from the very top of the IAA building to the front entrance of Burton LSC. I've managed this a few times, but most of the time LAG limits the rendering distance and the players aren't even visible much less shootabubble.

Talk about a clumsy approach to "fixing" a glitch. I mean, instead of actually just fixing tank sniping, they ruined another aspect of the game so that it wouldn't be physically possible.

 

Technically prevents tank sniping, but doesn't actually fix the issue, and ruins another part of the game.

 

They get lazy with that kind of stuff.

I once sniped a guy in a submarine. The sub itself was BARELY IN MY VIEW and surfaced, and I saw the hatch go up and I fired. I couldn't see him but it got him nonetheless

Ah yes, I remember tank sniping. One guy I killed kept screaming like a little bitch, good times...

Waged a small sniper war during piracy prevention, me on my yacht at del perro, one other dude sniping from maze bank central. Extended draw distance was all the way up, had to max it out to figure out where those *plink*s i kept hearing were coming from.

I once killed a bounty player with a sniper round firing from on top the Maitsbu factory across the river to the furtherest street in view probably two streets over on the other side. The round caused his car to explode, killing him plus giving me a cool 9000. I was very excitedly surprised and I am sure he thought he was out of range or he even noticed my blip at all.

 

I owned the Poplar street ten car garage at the time which is near the factory, LSC and ammu nation. Super place to camp. Many motion bomb kills for me as aggressive players would try climb up laters to get me. I was amazed at the stupidity of these people. When things got too hot I would simply take job to remote safe location.

 

It's a good place to camp too to disrupt the warehouse crate biz. It's not far from one of my stilt houses which has a good chopper LZ next door.
